4-year-old girl severely abused; mother and boyfriend face assault charges

SAN ANTONIO -- A young couple faces questioning by police after bringing a 4-year-old girl to the Christus Santa Rosa emergency room Monday night.

Police said Melanie Garcia, 20, and her boyfriend Matthew Carrillo, 23, brought Garcia's daughter to the hospital for treatment of injuries to the child when staff members noticed the injuries looked like they resulted from child abuse.

The abuse, which caused head injuries, bruising and possible cigarette burns, is believed to have taken place in the 300 block of Laverne Avenue, police said.

Due to the severe nature of the injuries, officials airlifted the girl to University Hospital where she remains in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Authorities booked Garcia and Carrillo on charges of assault and serious bodily injury to a child, but they could become much more severe depending upon the child's condition. Charges like manslaughter or even murder.

SAN ANTONIO -- Authorities say a 4-year-old girl who was allegedly beaten and burned by her mother and her mother's boyfriend has died from her injuries.

The Bexar County Medical Excaminer said Kayla Garcia was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The girl's mother, 20-year-old Melanie Garcia, and 23-year-old Matthew Carrillo were arrested on charges of assault and bodily injury to a child after taking the unconscious girl to Christus Santa Rosa emergency room on Monday night.

Due to the severe nature of the injuries, the girl was airlifted to University Hospital's pediatric intensive care unit, where she died.

The alleged abuse, which resulted in head injuries, bruising and possible cigarette burns, is believed to have taken place in the 300 block of Laverne Avenue, police said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Protective and Family Services said Child Protective Services had investigated a report of possible child abuse at the house on March 27. However, after interviews with all those involves, including the child, CPS determined there was no apparent risk to the child.

Police Sgt. Javier Salazar had said on Tuesday that any changes to the child's medical condition "could definitely lead to an upgrade in charges or additional charges."

It's just sickening how many little ones are dying of abuse. Even though the statistics say it's as likely at the hands of a parent or a girlfirend, it sure seems like we hear about the BFs most. This child made it to 4 years old, and the BF is not her father, so it's not hard to guess where the alleged abuse originated. And there's another mother falling down on the job.

Houston, TX*– Back in May, 23-year-old Matthew Carrillo and 21-year-old Melanie Garcia were both charged with injury to a child after Garcia’s 4-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital in critical condition, suffering from*a head injury, bruises all over her body (including her genitals) and a burn on her thigh.
Garcia initially told 911 that her daughter, Kayla, had fallen out of her wagon and hit her head. It wasn’t until after the couple were charged and the little girl died that Garcia changed her story.
She says that her boyfriend was angry at Kayla because of a slow walk home from a Subway where a meatball had fallen of the girl’s sandwich. Once back at the home, Garcia says that Carrillo disciplined the girl by making her pull down her pants and instructing her to brace herself against a couch. When Kayla fell to the floor from Carrillo striking her with a belt, he allegedly picked Kayla up by one arm and beat her with the belt as she dangled in front of him.
Not quite finished, she says Carrillo made the girl hold a phone book out in*front*of her for an extended period of time, slapped her across the face, and pushed her to the ground causing the girl to hit her head.…
