Andres Martinez, 24, was in court early Monday on charges of evading arrest and attempted intoxication assault after a 20-minute chase that started on the Gulf Freeway Sunday.
Police say he purposely swerved his car to hit an officer who was trying to lay down a spike strip. The officer had to jump out of the way of Martinez’s vehicle.
Police say Martinez told them after his arrest that he wasn’t trying to hit the officer. He said he was rolling a joint and trying to call his “peeps” to tell them he was going to jail.
Prosecutors originally tried to charge him with attempted murder for nearly hitting the cop, [...]
Prosecutors can refile the charges and try again at a later date.
Martinez has a long rap sheet that includes several drug charges and assault on a family member.
