My friend used to work overnights while he still lived with his folks, and he'd be woken up all day long by telemarketers, as no one else was home and they had no answering machine. When he finally exhausted his rage and just started fucking with them, as well, his favorite was to pretend to be an abused, neglected child, to spook them and see how long he could keep them on the line wasting their time. Of course, you'd probably end up investigated and charged with something if you tried to pull that today.
The internet is a huge collection of data, which people have taken the time to enter into computers.
