A woman who police said
kicked her 3-year-old son in the chest, reportedly
because he wanted to stay at a residence and play, is in jail for child abuse, officials said Tuesday.
Tabitha Dawn Liles, 29, 121 N. Spurr St., Florence, is charged with child abuse. She was arrested Monday afternoon, according to Florence police detective Justin Wright.
Wright said the abuse reportedly took place between 8-10 p.m. Sunday at a residence on Crown Street.
“She and the little boy were at the residence visiting friends,” Wright said. “She got ready to leave and got up and told the little boy they were leaving. The boy said he didn’t want to go yet; he wanted to stay and play with friends.”
Wright said witnesses reported that Liles got mad and kicked her young son in the chest.
“I don’t know if she was going kick him again, but an adult that was at the residence quickly jumped up and stopped her from doing anything else,” Wright said.
Reports indicate Liles later left the residence and left the child with the family who lived there for the night.
Wright said police investigators were called Monday morning and told about the situation. He said the Lauderdale County Department of Human Resources was also contacted and an investigation began.
Police said Liles showed up at the Crown Street residence Monday afternoon to pick up her son.
“The people there wouldn’t give him back to her and they called police again,” Wright said.
