Alcohol Involved In Separate Crashes; Mother & Son Killed Hours Apart

A man was charged Thursday in the hit-and-run crash that killed a woman early Sunday morning.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office charged Jesse R. Steinmetz, 32, with hit-and-run resulting in death for allegedly driving over Mary J. Moore, 45, as she lay in the road near S. 81st St. and W. Greenfield Ave.

Moore died on the scene and Steinmetz had driven away by the time West Allis Police arrived.

According to the criminal complaint, officers "observed a large fresh fluid trail which began at the body of Mary
Moore. This fluid trail went southbound on S. 81 St."

The officers "began following the fluid trail. The fluid appeared to be oil. They followed the fluid trail southbound" until they reached Steinmetz's house.

"At approximately 1:30 a.m., [the officers] began knocking on the door. They knocked loudly and continually for approximately a three and one half hour period. Finally at 5:00 a.m., the defendant Jesse Steinmetz answered the door."

After the officers noticed blood and hair on the undercarriage of Steinmetz's car, they placed him under arrest.

He said that he had been drinking before the crash and admitted to striking "something" in the road but "thought he hit some type of animal."

"Steinmetz then stated that when he got home he began thinking about what he hit and it began crossing his mind that he may have hit a person but he still was unsure that it was," the complaint alleged.

21-year-old Xavier Hughes is charged with multiple counts after a fatal accident in West Allis.

Hughes was allegedly driving a car that rolled over near 90th and National Ave. around 4 a.m. Sunday, April 30th. 22-year-old Thomas Olson was killed in the wreck, and several others were hurt.

In court Wednesday, Hughes pleaded not guilty to four felony charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

Officials noticed an odor of alcohol on Hughes’ breath. The complaint says when Hughes was asked if he had been drinking, he “stated that he had drank two beers.”

Hughes was taken to Froedtert Hospital after the accident where a blood sample was taken. The test revealed Hughes “had a .113 blood alcohol content in his system” two hours after the accident.

Xavier Hughes faces up to 75 years in prison and $150,000 in fines if convicted on all counts while Jesse Steinmetz faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

At the time of her death, it wasn't clear why, but Mary Moore was lying in the street when an alleged drunken driver struck and killed her. Police have been trying to figure out why.

WISN 12 News reporter obtained a search warrant that offers a troubling explanation.

Now Moore's sister, Martha, has learned that police suspect Mary's ex-boyfriend hit her with his car and left her in the street.

According to a search warrant, patrons at Capt'n Nicks tavern said Moore and her ex-boyfriend, Kerry Olson, were drinking and arguing before they left. A surveillance camera out front spotted Olson's car pass by one minute and 22 seconds before the car police said killed Moore.

The search warrant said police tracked Olson's car to his Waukesha home, where they said, "White fibers were located tangled inside the damaged area of the rear driver side bumper. A suspected human hair was also located in the bracket of the rear driver side tail/brake light."

WISN 12 News uncovered court records dating back nearly two decades that suggest Olson's conduct with Moore has been violent. In 1994, she got a temporary restraining order after telling a judge, "He has knocked my teeth out, with his fist, punched me in the head, causing severe bruising, kicked me in the head with steel-toed shoes. I saw him kill a kitten with a scissors as part of a 'sacrifice.'"

"Yes, she loved him, but they weren't together, Like I said, they weren't together," Martha Moore said.

The couple had two sons together. Now Olson's son, Thomas Olson, is dead and so is Thomas' mother. Martha Moore is reluctant to comment on Kerry Olson.

"I think he's the one who's just going to have to live with it," Martha Moore said.

Olson is not in custody. West Allis police are waiting on results from tests on the hair and fiber evidence taken from the car.

Well this just got a little murkier and a whole lot more interesting...

Ex mows her down, Along comes Jesse Steinmetz, but has NO idea that he inadvertently helped murder a woman.

So now Mr. Steinmetz is facing 25yrs for Hit and Run resulting in death...And the piece of shit ex as of now isn't facing anything...

Hopefully when the lab results come back the POS ex will face the same charges.
