Alcohol Involved In Separate Crashes; Mother & Son Killed Hours Apart

A Wisconsin woman and her adult son were killed in separate traffic crashes just hours apart in a Milwaukee suburb, police said Monday.

Mary J. Moore, 45, died after she was struck by a vehicle on a street in West Allis. A friend was speeding her son, Thomas M. Olson, 22, to the hospital to see her when he struck three parked cars and overturned, West Allis Deputy Chief Charles Padgett said. Olson was killed in the crash about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Padgett said Olson knew his mother had been hit, but he wasn't sure if Olson knew she had died.
    [...]

The driver of the car Olson was riding in was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He and two other passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Moore was hit as she lay prone in the street. A motorist following the car that struck her told police it looked as though the vehicle hit a speed bump, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's report. The witness did not realize that it was a person until getting closer, the report said.

Padgett said Moore had been drinking before she was hit, but it's not clear how much. An autopsy on her body was expected to be done Monday.

The driver that hit Moore drove off, but officers later found and arrested the person they believe is responsible. That driver may also have been drinking, authorities said.

Police said 45-year-old Mary Moore was struck and killed while lying in the street at about 1 a.m. Sunday.
    [...]

A few hours later, her son, 22-year-old Thomas Olson, called police to see if they knew where she was.

"They told us that they needed to come to the house to talk to us in person," Olson's fiancee, Latricia Jansen, said.

When Olson heard that, he and two friends took off in a sport s utility vehicle, racing to try to find his mom at a hospital.

The driver of the SUV told police he was driving westbound on Becher Street at 90 mph.

When he tried to maneuver a curve, he lost control, and the SUV overturned near the intersection of 90th Street and National Avenue. They hit a parked dump truck.

Olson was thrown out of the vehicle and died en route to the hospital.

That is just freaky 1::1 trillion crazy right there. If I was in a car w/ anyone going 90mph on a res. st. I'd be tellin them to slow the fuck down. Sure its an emergency but me dying en route solves not a damn thing. 2 corpses for a family to bury. How freakin sad...

Being (Originally) from that area....here is the even more ironic part....

They crashed only 5 blocks from West Allis Memorial hospital...where presumably they had Mom on ice already.

And just who in the hell thinks 90mph down a residential street is a good idea at ANY time of the day?

Dudes friend is the one who should have died! Just for being an idiot!

Olson was thrown out of the vehicle and died en route to the hospital.
Let me guess: he wasn't wearing his seat belt either? I would add something snarky like "not that it would have done him much good colliding with a parked dump truck at 90mph," but then again, the other three occupants survived the accident.

If I have a lesson to learn from all this Case it would be A) Don't get drunk and pass out in the street and B) Don't let my drunk friends drive me anywhere at 90 mph.

That said I feel bad for this families loss. Nobody should have to bury two loved ones that close together.

You know. I actually HAVE had a call to drive somewhere because the person I loved most in the world was dying, the last person on the planet directly related to me. I would NEVER have put the lives of my friends and strangers at risk because of it. NO one forced any of these people to drink, and having his friend driving STUPIDLY fast while drunk obviously didn't help matters any now did it?

All in all the posters here have actually been pretty tame in their treatment of this case.

As for learning our lesson, which lesson would that be? Don't sit on the road drunk, or don't drive down residential streets going ridiculous speeds while drunk? I didn't really need either of those lessons.

I am very sorry for your loss.

Of the two deaths in this thread, I am the more sorry for young Mr Olson's, since it seems so very unnecessary and may have been precipitated by the Police. I realise that for reasons of compassion they cannot tell people what exactly has happened over the telephone, but I cannot help but think that in this particular case knowing Mrs Moore was beyond reach might have taken some of the lethal urgency out of the ride to the hospital.

That said, we have another thread on here which has a couple of teens injured after lying down in the road to sunbathe and my flippant post above was referencing that. I don't know why I am explaining myself to you, and it may mean nothing at all to you. Feel free to ignore me.

But really. STOP googling Thomas' name if all it is going to do is upset you. Now is the time to prepare for the funeral.

Well, i'm sorry for your loss. But they were still stupid. They put many many people at risk at speeds like that, and with alcohol involved? Come on now, even you have to admit that was just idiotic. Now two people are dead and others hurt. Get over yourself.

    Wow.

Last week I got a call that my husband, the man I've been with since jr high (20 years) was taken to the hospital. The only thing I was told was that he was incoherent and bleeding from the mouth. I didn't know if he had fallen from a building (he's a commercial contractor) or if something had fallen on him. He was over an hr away and I drove the entire hr in tears trying to get to him, hoping that he was still alive when I got there. Despite my fear and sense of urgency I still drove within a reasonable speed. That doesn't mean I love him any less, it just means that I understand the dangers of not just speeding, but speeding while upset.

I understand you lost your best friend but the driver could have easily killed someone else who happened to be on the street while he was speeding.

So apparently in your world it is OK to

    1. Get rip roaring drunk, pass out in the middle of the street and blame the person who hit her, and not put the fault SQUARELY where it belongs in this case on the victim.

    2. Thomas decided to get into a car with somebody who he KNEW or should have suspected was under the influence. And yet THOMAS himself decided to get into THAT car. He could have driven himself to the hospital, taken a cab or a bus...or even called another friend who was sober.

My point is so simple that even a ghetto queen such as yourself can figure out....in spite of your public school education....Driving 90MPH down a residential street at 4-5AM is typically a bad idea! ESPECIALLY in WEST ALLIS!!!

To be fair we don't know WHY the mother was laying in the street. She could have been attacked, or she could have been suffering from some kind of medical condition. The article stated that she had been drinking but it doesn't say she was drunk.

Yeah, let's also keep in mind police believe the hit and run driver may have been under the influence as well. He could have been sober/alert and avoided her in the first place, maybe even stopped to see if she needed help and call 911 for her if necessary. He could have stopped after he hit her and called 911 to report the accident, but he chose to drive off (which makes me suspicious that he was in fact drinking and wanted to avoid a DUI.) One could point out that he may not have realized what he hit was a person, to which I would respond: what sort of genius hits something and doesn't pull over to check what it was/inspect his vehicle for damage? Oh yeah, the drunk kind, who may not even be aware they hit something...

There was a thread here awhile back where 5 different cars hit the same body but no one stopped to see what it was. Shortly after reading that thread I hit a bump on my way home in the dark and I couldn't get that thread out of my mind. I ended up driving all the way back to see what it was. FYI it was a tree limb from the storm we had, not a body :)

I remember about 4 years ago coming home after work about 10 at night in a very dark area and just as I came off a bridge I hit something HARD, so hard I could tell that my head light was hanging out. There was nowhere to pull over right at that spot since the ground droped away toward the river, but at the next road I turned around and went back to see what it was. I assume it was a deer and it either ran away or fell down the embankment. I got out and looked and the next night I told the nice neighborhood cop that usually stayed wiht us at night and no one was missing or found dead there. But it was scary to me, I agree the only person who wouldn't want to know what they hit was doing something bad at the time, like drinking.

I really hope you don't feel the need to "exslain" yourself, the spelling and text speak is killing my brain. If you want anything you type to be taken seriously, and not just dismissed as the idiocy of a 'tard defender, clean it up, if you can, but, sadly I don't think you can spell any better or put your thoughts into complete sensible sentences. I'm not even hoping for paragraphs.

    *sigh* Good Luck with that.

Your grief is too raw to be here. You need to close the window and focus on you good memories for now. No one who didn't personally know these people is going to say much nice about the story. It seems to me that all this could have been avoided but for alcohol, cars, and a lack of common sense. A real shame all the way around.
