A Nutley mother was arrested and charged with child endangerment after allegedly bringing her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, where the child sustained burns, according to police.

Patricia Krentcil, 44, of Nutley, was arrested on Tuesday, April 24, after an Essex County Prosecutor's Office and local investigation.

"Police were called to an elementary school out of concern when a kindergartener was experiencing pain as a result of a pretty severe sunburn," said Nutley Det. Anthony Montanari. "Allegedly, the mother took the child into a standup tanning booth, resulting in the burns."

New Jersey law states nobody under the age of 14 is allowed to use a tanning facility. Anyone under the age of 18 needs parental consent.

Officials say the mother took the child into the tanning booth with her without salon's knowledge.

No charges are being filed against the salon at this time.

It's funny, they hate people of all colors in general but essentially by tanning, they ARE becoming browner & then orange.

I guess if there were orange people in the world it'd be the only race that no one would discriminate against?

It looks like she took her teeth out and when they took the pic she was doing some of the mouth manipulations you do when your teeth are missing. Can't help it for the most part. So yeah, most likely her tongue or she was rolling her lips.

It's a load of shit that the tanning salon didn't know...they knew and didn't stop her.

I used to tan allot (stupid I know) and even got a part time job at a salon so I could get my tanning for nothing. from all the one's I've been to and where I worked there is no way you can get by the clerk to the booths with a child. The stand up booths are more intense then many others and generally in the front of the salon. Not only that, where I worked I had to program how much time was on the machines for who ever is using it - they also had to sign in at the desk. Every tanning place I've been to was exactly like this with the only exception was the GYM I was a member of and children weren't allowed in there either.

I remember throwing a lady out cause she thought she was going to take a child with her in the room with lay down bed and when I told her no way and argued with her she then was gonna leave the child in our waiting area. the child was like 3!

My best friend worked in a tanning salon and I helped out a lot.

They had a locked door to the tanning beds. The only way to get to the beds was if an attendant let you back there.

After watching the video, I can totally see how this all could happen. I agree that this could be a mix-up and not abuse.

44-year-old Patricia Krentcil, who was charged with second-degree child endangerment, said her daughter was never exposed to the tanning booth's UV rays and instead got slightly sunburned while playing outside on a warm day.

The girl's father told NBC 4 New York his daughter told classmates at school that she "went tanning with Mommy." He thinks a teacher overheard, inaccurately connected the girl's sunburn to the tanning salon trip and contacted police.

"This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved," said Rich Krentcil. "It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That's it. That's all that happened."

Patricia Krentcil said she treats her tanning salon trips as an errand in which she brings along her daughter, but insists the booth lights were never exposed to the girl.

"It's like taking your daughter to go food shopping," she told NBC 4 New York at her Nutley, N.J. home after being released on $25,000 bail. "There's tons of moms that bring their children in."

"I tan, she doesn't tan," she continued. "I'm in the booth, she's in the room. That's all there is to it."

The incident happened over a week ago, but there did not appear to be any burns on the little girl Tuesday.

That's scary. Why would anyone want to be that tanned? It looks so totally, obviously fake - like she has been dipped in Ronseal or creosote.

I agree that it's probably a misunderstanding, the child is a redhead and very fair skinned. Hopefully the parents will invest in some sunblock for her now.

I have never understood all this tanning nonsense and it's not because I'm naturally tanned either, I burn very easiily and I do not like being sunburned. My best friend will not wear shorts unless she spents a few months on a tanning bed, I just don't get it, people are all shades from the whitest white to the blackest black, and not naturally orange, just get over it already. Gosh!

And to think years ago to be tan meant that you were nothing but a common outdoor labor worker and people looked down there nose at you. Now?
