Investigators said Jaime Mata, 30, and a companion got into a fight on April 19 with staff at a nightclub in the 8000 block of Harrisburg in east Houston, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.

Mata left La Estrella Bar after the scuffle and returned with a piece of tree log that he wedged between the ground and the burglar bars at the nightclub to prevent anyone from exiting the building, arson investigators said.

Mata then bought gasoline at a Conoco station across the street from the bar and returned to the rear of the nightclub, where he poured it along the length of the building and ignited it, according to arson investigators.

Witnesses said they heard Mata yell out, "This place is gonna burn," before he left the bar to buy the gasoline, court records show.

Authorities are still trying to identify another person suspected of setting the fire, which was captured on surveillance cameras. That person uses the alias "Pepe."

Surveillance video showed the men closing burglar bars and then barricading the door with a large piece of wood. The men are then seeing pouring gasoline around a rear exit and then setting it on fire, investigators said.

Everyone was able to get out through a third exit. No injuries were reported.

HOUSTON, TX – Police have arrested a man for allegedly barricading a populated bar’s exit and then setting the bar on fire.
On the night of April 19, 30-year-old Jaime Mata and his buddy, known only as “Pepe,” were kicked out of an East Houston nightclub, the East End Bar, for fighting with staff.
Apparently they felt that if they*weren’t*to be allowed a full night’s fun, no one else should be either. Witnesses state that as the pair were being ejected, Mata called out the subtle warning, “This place is gonna burn!”
Mata and Co. left and fetched some gasoline from a nearby Conoco station. They then returned*to the bar where, as is clearly seen in surveillance video, a shirtless man with ‘Mata’ emblazoned on his back (and tits bigger than mine) accompanied by an equally shirtless friend, closes the burglar bars over the front door of the bar.*He then wedges a large piece of wood between the burglar gate and the ground, effectively jamming it closed.
Further video shows the men rounding the building and pouring the gasoline along the bar’s back wall and rear exit, then lighting it.*Lucky for patrons and staff, the building was equipped with a third door and everyone was able to safely evacuate.…
