Investigators said Jaime Mata
, 30, and a companion got into a fight on April 19 with staff at a nightclub
in the 8000 block of Harrisburg in east Houston, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.
Mata left La Estrella Bar after the scuffle and returned with a piece of tree log that he wedged between the ground and the burglar bars
at the nightclub to prevent anyone from exiting the building, arson investigators said.
Mata then bought gasoline at a Conoco station across the street from the bar and returned to the rear of the nightclub, where he poured it along the length of the building and ignited it
, according to arson investigators.
Witnesses said they heard Mata yell out, "This place is gonna burn,"
before he left the bar to buy the gasoline, court records show.
Authorities are still trying to identify another person suspected of setting the fire, which was captured on surveillance cameras. That person uses the alias "Pepe."
