BELFAST, Maine — A Dixmont man was arrested Thursday morning after admitting to two counts of felony gross sexual assault against a 6-year-old girl, according to a Waldo County detective.

Alfred Seekins, 49, of 17 Masonic Road was released from the Waldo County Jail at about 11:30 a.m. after posting $500 bail, according to a corrections officer at the jail.

Waldo County Detective Jason Bosco said the investigation started when the victim reported the assaults to a police officer. Seekins was interviewed at the Sheriff’s Department on Thursday morning and was arrested after confessing to the crimes, Bosco said. Seekins, who has no prior record of sex crimes, is scheduled to appear in Waldo County Superior Court in Belfast on Oct. 28.

The alleged assaults occurred in June in Waldo County, according to Bosco, who made the arrest. Seekins was not a stranger to the girl nor was he directly related to her, though Bosco declined to detail how Seekins knows her.

Asked whether Seekins exhibited any remorse for his alleged crimes, Bosco said he did and that Seekins was cooperative throughout the interview and arrest.

BELFAST, Maine — A man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl two years ago was sentenced to 18 years in prison with all but 8 years suspended on Friday in Waldo County Superior Court.

Alfred Seekins, 50, of Dixmont, admitted to two counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of unlawful sexual contact and two counts of visual sexual aggression against a child. The visual sexual aggression charges were brought because Seekins performed a sexual act in front of the child, according to Waldo County Deputy District Attorney Eric Walker.

All but eight years of his sentence were suspended as part of a plea agreement that avoided having to have the now-8-year-old victim testify against Seekins, Walker said.

“Sometimes the best trial is one you don’t have,” Walker said. “I went into graphic detail of what she would testify to, if she had to testify. This girl has learning disabilities. Having her testify would have been difficult. I am absolutely thrilled we didn’t have to get her on the stand.”

Seekins, who had a close relationship with one of the girl’s family members, was first investigated by police in September 2010 when the victim reported the assaults to a police officer. He confessed to the crimes when interviewed by Det. Jason Bosco of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Seekins will not be allowed to have further contact with the victim, or with any children under 16, Walker said.

“He and his attorney argued he wanted to have contact with his other grandchildren,” Walker said.
But Justice Robert Murray ultimately decided against that, Walker said.
Once released from prison, Seekins also will have to attend and complete sex offender counseling to the satisfaction of his probation officer, will have to live where he is directed by his probation officer and have to register as a lifetime sex offender.

He will be on probation for four years after his release.

Walker said the girl has moved to a different part of the state, is living with family members and is doing “pretty well.”
