Court KFC: $8m Payout To Girl

Feel bad for the girl and her family, but call Bullshit on the claim, and surprised the judge awarded the money

If they did get poisoned by KFC I would think there would be many more cases not just one family, I think the salmonella came from their own home and they're responsible

FAST food giant KFC has been told to pay $8 million to the parents of a girl who say she was left paralysed and brain damaged after eating a chicken Twister.
Monika Samaan, then aged 7, became seriously ill with salmonella poisoning after eating at the Villawood KFC in 2005.

Last Friday her family won their compensation bid against KFC in the New South Wales Supreme Court and today Justice Stephen Rothman ordered KFC to pay $8 million plus legal costs.

KFC denied it was responsible for the poisoning and says it will appeal the decision.

There's something that doesn't sound quite right about this one. It almost seemed to be too easy to get this award out of KFC.

At any rate, if the chicken was the cause, I truly hope that she takes that money and goes a little farther down the road for Zaxby's chicken or Popeye's or something. My sister worked at a KFC when she was younger, and told some pretty gross stories about stuff that happened there. One of the milder things was picking up chicken that had been dropped on the floor and just putting it back on the tray to put out to customers. It sure changed my eating habits. I don't do KFC, at all. EVER.

Not necessarily. If it was just that one piece of chicken that was undercooked then it would make sense that the girl was the only one to get sick.

Years ago we were in McDonalds and a there was a woman there who had gotten a raw McFish. The manager was explaining to her that the fish is precooked before it gets to the restaurant so all the have to do is drop it in the deep fryer and crisp it up. If the manufacturing plant skips a piece in the cooking process then it's going to still be raw when it gets to the customer.

I understand your point and anything is possible but the odds are extremely high that only that one piece was contaminated
and even if it was undercooked it doesn't necessarily make it contaminated

Cross-contamination is the transfer of harmful bacteria to food from other foods, cutting boards, utensils, etc., if they are not handled properly. This is especially true when handling raw meat, poultry, and seafood, so keep these foods and their juices away from already cooked or ready-to-eat foods and fresh produce. When handling foods,

Surely there is more to this story. It may be that there was a rash of salmonella poisoning among KFC patrons that day but everyone got over it with no lasting effects except this poor little girl. All illnesses hit the young and elderly harder than they do a healthy person in their prime.

One of my Popeye's chicken meals came with a white feather still attached to a piece once. I didn't eat it - tossed it - and didn't see the point of raising hell since it was a one time spiel and the food and service was great usually. *shrug* I figure it's a freaky incident. Heh, maybe that is what's wrong with me, I allow for the bizarre - it sure as hell breaks up the humdrum!
