WOODLAND PARK, N.J. -- Prosecutors have charged a New Jersey police officer with attempted aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl he met while assisting her family in an unrelated police matter.

Woodland Park Police Officer Steven Vigorito Jr. pleaded innocent to the charges Wednesday and is held on $250,000 bail following his arrest while on duty Tuesday night.

Police say detectives posing as the girl received explicit text messages from the officer, who allegedly arranged to meet her for sex and sent pictures exposing himself while in uniform, some believed to have been sent from the police station.

Woodland Park, NJ – Steven Vigorito Jr., a 12-year veteran of Woodland Park Police Department and married father of two, was arrested while on duty Tuesday for allegedly attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with a 12-year-old girl just days after visiting her home regarding an unrelated domestic dispute.
I’m going to take this opportunity to point out that this girl has only been alive for as long as Vigorito has been on the job.
Apparently, the girl’s mother phoned police on Monday after Vigorito had responded to the aforementioned domestic dispute at their home.* She told them that he had made some inappropriate comments to the 12-year-old, given her his personal cell phone number, and asked her to text him.* The police then immediately contacted the prosecutor’s office and they put a detective on the case, posing as the girl, and began exchanging text messages with the accused.
Over the next several days, the texts reportedly became more explicit, including a picture of Vigorito exposing himself while in uniform.* It was after he had arranged a sexual encounter with the person he thought was a girl that he was arrested and charged with charges ranging from attempted aggravated sexual assault to luring and enticing a child.…
