Authorities: Kidnapped newborn of fatally shot mom found alive

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Authorities say they've found the three-day-old baby who was kidnapped after his mother was fatally shot outside a Montgomery County doctor's office.
The Montgomery County District Attorney did not say where newborn baby boy Keegan Schuchardt was found, only that he was located shortly after 8pm and they are now trying to reunite him with his father.

We're told authorities have detained one person but no charges have been filed. We still don't know whether that person is the woman investigators suspect in the shooting death of Schuchardt's mother, who's been identified as 28-year-old Kayla Marie Golden.

The shooting and kidnapping happened Tuesday afternoon outside a pediatric clinic in Montgomery County.

Investigators say the suspect was parked beside Golden's truck and an altercation erupted between them. The woman opened fire on Golden, shooting her at least six times.

"The child was being put into the suspect vehicle and that's when the mother tried to get into the car. The car sped away, knocking the lady to the ground," said Lt. Dan Norris with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say Golden later died at Hermann Memorial Hospital in The Woodlands. An Amber Alert was issued for Schuchardt shortly after his kidnapping.

The suspect is described as a thin black woman in her late 20s or early 30s. She is described as having gold hair and was wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans. The car is a light blue or sea green four-door Lexus sedan

What the ever loving....geesh. Why did she do this? How sad for the new mohter and her son who will now have to grow up without his mommy. I'm a little confused by the article. Did the woman take the baby first and then when the mother tried to get into the car to get her baby she was shot or did she shoot the mother and take the baby and another mother tried to get in the car and was knocked to the ground?

How senseless this is. I will be interested to know what prompted this killing and abduction. Was this woman a loon looking to steal a kid. I mean it was in front of a doctor's office of all places.

Police across Texas are frantically hunting for two people who ripped a three-day-old infant from his dying mother's arms after gunning her down as she left a pediatrician's office.

'My baby! My baby!' Kayla Marie Golden screamed as the suspects abducted little Keegan Schuchardt Tuesday afternoon in Spring, Texas, a quiet suburb of Houston, witnesses reported.

Miss Golden, 28, died after being shot multiple times at close range and struck by the fleeing suspect's light blue Lexus.

A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for the missing infant and police throughout Texas are on the lookout for the luxury car, which authorities believe still has a blood-stained driver's side from where the driver ran down Miss Golden.

Miss Golden was walking to her pickup truck after a checkup with little Keegan, when a woman in a Lexus parked in the adjacent spot starting fighting with her, sheriff's Lt Dan Norris said.

The woman pulled out a pistol and repeatedly shot Miss Golden at close range. Witnesses reported hearing up to seven shots.

One witness said a man in the car then picked up the infant and put him in the Lexus.

Miss Golden tried to reach in the car and take back her infant as the car sped away, but the driver ran her down.

Thanks for clearing up a couple of my questions. A mother's love is amazing. This woman was shot what 6 times at close range and she still tried to get her baby out of the abductors car before being ran down. Simply amazing will of strength on her part. It breaks my heart her life ended that way. Breaks my heart this boy no longer has this woman who obviouslly loved him so much it gave her super human strength to try to save him. I hope one day he can appreciate that she fought with everything she had to try to save her little boy and died trying.

I will be anxious to find out why this couple did this. Was it random? Were they stalking her? How and where did they find the baby (Thank God he was found alive and uninjured)? Are the suspects in custody? Why did these people do this? Did they even know her or the baby? So many unanswered questions. Just seems so senseless.

I watched this..the little boy must be an older child of the couple. Dad is in the numb stage still. I can hear it in his tone and how he speaks. It really has not entirely sunk in yet. When the reporter asked him if he could relate how he feels to other's right now I shook my head no before he even did. The reporter is an idiot. There is no way to describe what losing you spouse feels like especially while it's so fresh. I'm 5 years in and I still couldn't explain it to you where you would trully understand the feeling. I've been in his shoes (my spouse was not murdered but still I lost a spouse unexpectedly at a young age with small children at home) and my heart breaks for him as well. He has a long hard road of healing ahead of him. I pray for this family. Hopefully dad can gather strength for the boys if not for himself.

I think it's become a lot harder to steal one from a maternity ward now that a lot of hospital's have electronic montor bracelets they put on the baby's ankle (the Navy hospital which you have to have an ID to access had them 8 years ago when I had my older son) He only left my room to be circumcised so he was with me the entire time for the most part. Another reason I think it's harder is because a lot of hospitals leave the baby in the room with the mother now instead of taking to a nursery. The baby only leaves if it needs a medical procedure (ie, circumcision, NICU ect) Plus the hospital where I had my youngest two the maternity ward is a locked unit and you cannot go where the recovery rooms where mother and child are without having to stop at a desk. I imagine now that there are no nursery's it is probably harder to snatch one. When I had my 1st 15 years ago I had the luxury of taking her to a nursery for the first night so I could sleep. I imagine a bunch of babies in one room with a few nurses would make it easier for one to wait for an opportune moment to grab one.

Anyways; so now that they can't steal babies from the hospital is this the new tactic? Stalk out peditrician's offices and wait for some unsuspecting mother to take her newborn to the doctor and then ambush her right there in open. This is pure and utter bullshit. The thought terrifies me (not for myself but for mother's everywhere) I really do hope they catch these sick fucks before they make it to Mexico. I hope you are right and they make an example out of these monsters. I'm sure the mother's last moments were terror but I'm hoping she was too wrapped up in fight or flight (and boy howdy did she fight because I don't know if I could be shot 6 times and still try to fight my way into a car to save my child) to realize how bad the situation was.

Verna McClain, 30, has been charged with capital murder. She was in custody Wednesday morning.

Montgomery County deputies say that McClain got out of an ice-blue, four-door Lexus around 3:40 p.m. and shot the victim, Kala Golden, about seven times. She then fled with the baby.

McClain's car was found at the Fawn Ridge apartment complex located on the 12400 block of Sawmill Rd. The defendant later returned to the complex and asked to speak to detectives.

She confessed to shooting Golden in order to take her baby. The defendant's sister corroborates that McClain had spoken to her about adopting a baby soon.

At an earlier date she told her sister she would be adopting a child soon. After the shooting and kidnapping she contacted her sister and told her she now had the child and would need to do the adoption.

McClain has no prior record and is a licensed vocational nurse registered in the State of California since 2008.

She is being held in the Montgomery County Jail without bond.

Another person of interest is being questioned.

Maybe it was a money issue. Adopting can be an expensive venture. Driving around a Lexus, while living in an apartment may have taken a lot of her expendable income. (I know, I know...It could have been a 1990 Lexus...I'm just tossing around ideas here) She probably rationalized in her crazy mind that she had to find a way to keep up the lie that she told her sister and this was the only way to do so. What a tragic story. My heart breaks for the husband/father.

But she was telling people that she was going to adopt, so race wouldn't have been an issue. Although, now that I think about it, I see plenty of white couples adopting black/hispanic/asian babies but never see an asian/hispanic/or black couple adopting white babies.
