FRONT ROYAL -- The mother of a child who suffered severe injuries in November was indicted Monday in Warren County Circuit Court on charges of child abuse, malicious wounding and making a false report to law enforcement.
The defendant, Shantelle Everhart, 23, of 2007 Reliance Road, is accused of inflicting injuries on the child with "the intent to maim, disfigure, disable or kill."
The criminal complaint states that the child was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital on Nov. 22 after being "severely beaten." The complaint lists the injuries as brain bleed, a spiral fracture of the left arm, perforated left eardrum and numerous bruises from head to toe.
The child's brain injury required that she be transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, according to the complaint.
The compalint also states that Everhart admitted in late January that she jerked her daughter off the toilet on the morning of Nov. 22 and may have broken the child's arm in doing so.
Everhart's boyfriend, Danny Lee Whitsell II is also facing charges of malicious aggravate wounding and felony child abuse in the incident, according to Chris Williams, an investigator with the Sheriff's Office.
Williams said Wednesday that the vicitim, a 3-year-old girl who has since turned 4 has recovered from her injuries.
"The child is doing well at this point and in the care of a family member," he said.
Williams said Everhart spoke to him and one of the commonwealth's attorneys in a conference room in the courthouse on the day she told her story of the possible injury she may have inflicted on the child. He said she has recanted her story since and returned to her orignial stateiment in which she denied harming the child.
Everhart remains out on bail while Whitsell remains in jail held without bond, Williams said.
