The child's mother, 24-year-old Nicole Renee Dicosola, was at work when the alleged incident occurred, an incident report states. She faces unlawful neglect of a child charges after deputies say she left the 2-year-old and his 4-year-old brother in the care of her boyfriend, 23-year-old Joshua Michael Moton, knowing Moton had the propensity to harm the children, deputies said.

A physician at Greenville Memorial Hospital told detectives that she and a neurologist believe the 2-year-old's injuries were caused by someone shaking or hitting the child in the head with an object, the report states. The child's injuries were so severe that doctors removed a portion of his skull to relieve brain swelling, according to the report.

The injuries occurred Tuesday, and Cherokee County sheriff's detectives were initially notified after Dicosola told them she lived in Gaffney. The case was then referred to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office late Wednesday when detectives learned the incident occurred at Moton's Spartanburg County home on Chesnee Highway, where Dicosola and her children have been living for the last month.

Moton has been charged with felony child abuse and remains at the Spartanburg County Detention Center in lieu of a $30,000 bond.
Dicosola also remains at the jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Father Of Boy Who Had Part Of Skull Removed Says Abuse Has Happened Before

A mother and her boyfriend are in the Spartanburg County Detention Center on child abuse charges and a father is trying to understand how it could happen again.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says after investigating a suspected child abuse case it was determined that Joshua Michael Moton had struck and/or shaken the two year old son of his girlfriend, Nicole Renee Dicosola.

Deputies say the boy’s mother was at work when the incident happened and Moton was the care taker for the victim and his four year old brother. The report states Dicosola came home to find the child had been injured.

The neurologist in the case said the two year old had to have surgery to remove part of his skull to release the pressure on his brain due to the swelling and bleeding. There is evidence of severe brain damage from the injury and the injuries are extremely life threatening.

Dicosola and her children live in Gaffney but have been staying with Moton in his Chesnee home.

Joshua Michael Moton has been charged with one count of child abuse for the life threatening injury he caused to a child in his care. His bond has been set at $30,000.

Nicole Renee Dicosola is charged with one count child neglect. Officials say the charges stem from her leaving Jace with Moton when she wasn’t supposed to.. Her bond is set at $10,000.

Meanwhile, Jace’s father, Rusty Knox, wants answers.

“It hurt, really bad,” Knox explains. “It still hurts because, I mean, we’re still in the woods right now. We don’t know what’s going to happen with him [Jace].

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office tells 7 On Your Side they learned of previous accusations involving Moton and the young boys from the Department of Social Services.

“All that we know is there have been accusations of physical abuse by Mr. Moton to the children,” Lt. Tony Ivey says. “To the extent of it, we don’t know because it took place in another county.”

Knox says he contacted DSS after that incident.

“I know in November of last year he got hit in the head, in a head injury, and he had surgery in March,” Knox adds.

Because of privacy laws, DSS wouldn’t comment on those previous allegations, or the case.

The sheriff’s office says it’s not likely Dicolosa will see either of her children again anytime soon.

“That’s going to have to be determined by the family court,” Ivey says. “They're going to have to look at the totality of all the circumstances involving this case and, of course, the severity of this open case already with the Department of Social Services."

Knox is just trying to keep a brave face for Jace and his other four-year-old son.

“He went in the room yesterday and saw him and it’s just all he’s been talking about,” says Knox.

DSS released a statement Friday evening. It reads:
"We are deeply saddened by the news of this child’s serious injuries. Through our partnership with law enforcement, the other child is currently safe. The department is still gathering information concerning this case."

Dicosola had full custody of both boys at the time of the incident, but that is no longer the case.

So, the implication is that Motor(head) hurt Jace in November. And that Jace had surgery in March, apparently also due to some unnamed injury. I am appalled that Jace's mom would leave him in the care of a monster whose previous damage to her child she absolutely couldn't ignore. What? Did she think Motor(head) had learned his lesson and would be nice now?

The Cherokee County Department of Social Services filed a case involving Dicosola’s children on March 15, according to Family Court records. The details of that case are not known.

“Doctors have told detectives and the parents that the child may not make it,” Ivey said. “This child suffered some pretty serious injuries.”

When DSS is notified of a potential case involving neglect or abuse, a caseworker can ask police or a Family Court judge to remove the child from the home and place him or her in emergency protective custody.

Instead of removing the child from the home during a DSS investigation, the caseworker and parent(s) can develop a safety plan that sets out what conditions must be met to protect the child or children, who are allowed to stay in the home.

I know these people personally an I knew that he was hurtin that baby just never had proof... The last time I had spoke with her Jace had jus had his 1st surgery an had a shunt inserted n his head an she had sent him 2 daycare the day after he had gotten out of the hosptial... I told her I cud no longer b there 4 her if she was gonna b with him an knowin that he hurt them an all she wud say is he has never touched them I SWEAR!! Now this!! Those kids r precious!!! Please keep Jace in ur prayers! An I was gonna upload a pic of him I took when he was 4mnths but can't figure that out! Ty all for praying 4 him an Hope that they ROT IN JAIL!!
