Tammy Gibson won't tolerate a child sex offender.

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- A woman confronted a Level 3 sex offender who had just moved into her neighborhood and beat him with a baseball bat, Pierce County sheriff’s deputies said.

The woman, Tammy Gibson, 40, went to the home of William Baldwin, 24, claiming he molested her children. She told investigators she struck Baldwin, who is 7 feet 3 inches tall, with the bat and that she "kept swinging and swinging and swinging," deputies said.

"I was out of my mind. You're right, I shouldn't have done it," she told investigators, according to court documents obtained by KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty. See charges

Gibson told investigators she was worried Baldwin would re-offend. She admitted to investigators that the allegation that Baldwin had molested her children was untrue.

Gibson was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and felony harassment. She was arraigned Wednesday and pleaded not guilty.

Baldwin was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of a broken arm. When he was released from the hospital, he was arrested on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender.

The attack happened a few hours after deputies distributed fliers warning that Gibson had moved to the neighborhood near Puyallup, deputies said.

Baldwin was convicted in 1999 of first-degree child molestation in connection with sexual assaults on two 5-year-old girls.

She started beating me the way a man would with a bat", said Baldwin of the incident. "I've never even seen her before and she just comes over and accuses me of molesting her children and attacks me with a bat."

Gibson said she had seen Baldwin around the River Road Trailer Park and adjacent Cottonwood Mobile Home Park several times over the last year.

"I can't believe that he was allowed in our neighborhood", said Gibson.Gibson said she often saw the 7 feet 3 inches tall Baldwin talking with her 10-year-old daughter.

"Last year, on the Fourth of July, he was talking to my daughter. I got the flyer in the mail and I snapped. I went nuts," Gibson told McCarty.

Gibson said she once told her live-in boyfriend she thought Baldwin was harmless, but said all that changed when she got the flyer that listed Baldwin's conviction on two counts of first-degree child molestation in 1999 as well as other offenses.

The flyer states that Baldwin lured a 5-year-old girl into a doghouse in his backyard and sexually assaulted her. That crime was committed while he was on parole for another sexual assault in which he forced a different 5- year-old girl into a sex act with him.

Baldwin told McCarty he understands why people need to be informed that he is living in their neighborhood and claimed he has been assaulted in the past when people residing near him learned about his criminal past.

Baldwin said he has not re-offended since his release from prison in 2002 and said he has gone through counseling while jailed and now wants to put his past behind him.

"I did wrong to kids and people. I'm not like that anymore," said Baldwin.Baldwin said that on the day of the assault, he had just completed a job interview and was looking forward to getting to work with a new company.

He also said he approves of the sex offender notification law. "I think people should be told. If I wasn't a sex offender and I had a sex offender or a rapist living near me, I'd be mad too. I understand why she did what she did, but I didn't touch her kids," Baldwin said of Gibson.

Because he lived in the trailer park near River Road for several months before changing his registered address as required by law, Baldwin could be charged with failing to register as a sex offender.

Gibson was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and felony harassment. She was arraigned Wednesday and pleaded not guilty.

Gibson said her biggest concern now that she is in jail and could go to prison is her daughter.

Here in Newfoundland, and I assume the rest of Canada, there is no public notification unless the guy is a real danger to society. Then , they issue a warning to be aware of the person. Nice, huh? Even if I were a police officer and I wanted to check up on a neighbor, see if they are registered, I can't unless it is a part of an ongoing investigation. The registry is not available to the public. Since we do not usually hand out huge sentences to sex offenders or murderers, they can get out before measures are taken to keep them in. See, in Canada, we do not even give murderers consecutive sentences. No matter how many murders one commits, they only serve one life sentence. What they do is have them declared a dangerous offender which is a long and tedious process. This is usually achieved while the murderer is incarcerated and thus they never get out. Since sex offenders are not given life sentences (which, btw, rarely means life; there is always the possibility of parole), they can be back on the streets while the gov't is still working to have them given dangerous offender status, which also, once given, cannot be overturned. In a case where an offender has served their whole sentence and has to be released but is at a very high risk to reoffend, the police will issue a public warning. Ah, ya gotta love Canadian justice.

That, however, has not stopped people who know of a sex offender from printing flyers and spreading the word when one moves into the neighborhood. And then crucifying the shit out of them.

You are correct that personal information about the offender and where he lives is not available to the public but it is readily available information to all LE agencies.

I'm actually really shocked about all of this. This has been a major topic for debate here. Half the people I talk to about this either want to shake her hand, the other half said she is completely nuts.

Here's just my quick two cents...he got arrested, did his time...went out on parole, while out on parole did it again! Now he's out again, and he fails to register his correct address...and people wonder why everyone gets pissed off at the judicial system? He may have been 14/15 when his original crime was committed, however...he JUST got out (in 2002? Who knows what else he did while he wasn't registered) and is already screwing up again.

I personally wanna buy this woman a drink. If I had seen this jackass talking to my kids, I'd probably react the same way. Not to the extent of a baseball bat...but I'd tell my hubby that a pedophile was talking to our kids. (Good luck running from my hubby!)

I have to stand by the original notion that pedophiles CAN'T be rehabilitated. This just proves that theory all the more. Who knows what this guy was saying to her daughter (he couldda been trying to lure her away to play "doctor"). Why was he even talking to the daughter? Wasn't there some sort of law that states sex offenders aren't allowed within a set amount of distance of little kids? Apparently, I guess, another loophole!

I really do NOT buy the "I'm fixed" thing from him either. He did it TWICE, then as soon as he gets out...he's immediately screwing up again. If he was REALLY fixed, he shouldn't of been talking to this woman's kids. If I were a sex offender with prior convictions etc, I would do everything in my power to avoid kids at all times just in case I got charged with bogus things. (Just an assumption here)

I agree, she should probably just be quiet and stop talking to the press. She needs to worry about these serious charges against her. But in all honesty...I can't help but want to give her some kudos.

Just food for thought: He's listed as a Lvl 3 sex offender (very likely to reoffend), and is still required to register. He's been charged with failing to register his correct address and is currently sitting in jail because of this.
