INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman was killed and her brother was injured in a shooting in front of the woman's children on Indianapolis east side late Tuesday, police said.
Officers were called to the 3700 block of North Layman Avenue just after 10 p.m. on reports of shots fired and a woman screaming.
When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been shot in the stomach and the chest, and a man who had been shot in the leg, sitting in a car.
Two children, who were unharmed, were in the backseat of the car.
Both victims were taken to Methodist Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman's brother, Jonathan Perry, 21, remained hospitalized Wednesday morning with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The woman was preparing to meet her estranged husband to exchange the couple's children, but police said they had not determined what led to the shooting.
The children were released to family members on the scene.

Toran was pronounced dead a short time later. Family members said the pair was preparing to meet Toran's estranged husband to exchange the couple's children.
Police later located Miles Toran, 23, of Virginia, the victim's estranged husband.
He was questioned and arrested on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder.

Mom had obtained protective order prior to fatal shooting

Sharon Toran was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her brother, 21-year-old Jonathan Perry, was shot once in the leg. He was also taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Fox59 obtained a 911 call from Tuesday night. The person who called told a dispatcher: “I heard somebody begging for help and I heard two loud booms.” The dispatcher asked if the caller had seen anyone. The caller then said, “No, I was looking out my back door and I heard somebody, uh, begging for help.”

The children were not harmed and were handed over to family members.

Sharon Toran was supposed to be in court Friday, after her husband had filed a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. In court documents, it stated the couple had been married since 2008, but had separated last month.

The paperwork stated Miles Toran is a member of the U.S. Air Force and wanted custody of their daughters.

The court documents said the “wife (Sharon Toran) has encountered mental difficulties, including two in-patient stays in Louisiana. Father believes that her mental health is at issue in this Cause, and further believes the children are at risk while living with her”.

Fox59 obtained paperwork that showed Sharon Toran had filed a protective order against her husband just 16 days before she was killed.
