CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte man will spend nearly three decades behind bars after he was convicted of staging car accidents in the Dilworth and Myers Park area so that he could rob and rape women.
Thirty-one-year-old Jaunton Carter pled guilty to first degree rape, two counts of first degree kidnapping, two counts of sexual battery, and three counts of common law robbery on Friday morning.
Judge Forrest D. Bridges sentenced Carter to serve 336 to 413 months (28-34 years) in prison.
In February 2010, Carter robbed a woman as she was getting out of her car around 1:30 a.m. on Spanish Moss Lane. He put his hand over her mouth and demanded her pocketbook. When he didn't find any money in her purse, he took her cigarettes.
The next morning, Carter rear ended his next victims at Colony Road and Runnymede Lane. When the two women got out of the car to inspect the damage, he pointed what appeared to be a gun at them and forced them back into their car and joined them.
He fondled both women over their clothing, demanded money and forced them to drive to an ATM. When he was unsuccessful in getting more money, he forced them to drive to the 3000 block of Ferncliff Road and made one of the women out of the car.
He raped her while the other woman was forced to watch. Carter continued to point a gun at them both to ensure their compliance.
He then took six dollars from them and ran away.
Around 30 minutes later, a woman leaving her job at a restaurant near Park Road when she noticed a car following her.
When she stopped at McDonald Avenue and Ideal Way, Carter's car hit her car from the rear. When she got out to inspect any damage, he pointed a gun at her and demanded her purse. He took her purse and about $300 in cash.
Police were able to identify the defendant based on his DNA that was left at the rape crime scene.
