Parents Of 9 Kids James & Kijua Beaudrie Arrested For Child Abuse

DES MOINES, Iowa -
Des Moines police said nine children have been removed from their home after charges ere filed against their parents.

Police said a 15-year-old runaway's case last October lead to an investigation that continues today.

In November, James Beaudrie was charged with assault causing injury of his teenage daughter.
The daughter again ran away from home on Jan. 30, police said.

All nine of James and Kijua Beaudrie's children were placed in shelters or foster homes pending the investigation, police said.
On Monday, detectives arrested Kijua Beaudrie on charges of three counts of neglect of a dependent child. Kijua Beaudrie was transported to the Polk County Jail.

Detectives said they have been unable to find James Beaudrie and believe he fled the state. His van was found Salt Lake City.

Police said he is wanted on eight counts of third-degree sexual abuse.

They are asking for the public's help in finding James Beaudrie. He is described as a white male, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 350 to 400 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

The parents of nine children face multiple abuse and neglect charges after months-long investigation by Des Moines police also uncovered evidence thatthe family alternated their time between living in a store at a mall and a hotel room.

Police say the father of the children, who range in age from a few months old to 16, has fled Iowa.

“There are several abnormal aspects to this case,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Chris Scott told The Des Moines Register today. “The culture of the family, the living in a mall, the broad scope of the investigation.”

Police said James Beaudrie apparently ran a Games by James store in Minnesota. They were in eastern Iowa for a short time before moving to Des Moines.

James Beaudrie opened GameSip in October 2011 at Merle Hay Mall.

The family apparently lived in the GameSip, occasionally staying in a hotel to shower or do laundry, police said.

Police said they are unsure whether the couple’s children had ever been to school.

In October, one of the couple’s children ran away. She stayed with friends in Minnesota and eventually wound up in a shelter where she told employees about alleged ongoing physical abuse by her father, police said.

She reportedly told shelter workers James Beaudrie had spanked her multiple times with a hair brush or his bare hand. The day she ran away, he allegedly spanked her with a broom handle. An employee at the shelter saw the bruises, Des Moines police reports show.

The couple’s other children also said their father spanked them, according to the reports.

James Beaudrie was charged with assault causing injury and his daughter returned to live with the family. The Iowa Department of Human Services set up a monitoring plan, police said. Beaudrie pleaded guilty to a lesser assault charge in March and was fined $65.

In January, the girl ran away again. She told police her father had attempted to sexually assault her.

A police and Department of Human Services investigation in January led to an emergency removal the nine children from the family.

Once the children were removed, the “beams started coming apart,” police said.

Kijua Beaudrie began distancing herself from her husband; he fled.

“It seems like he was almost a cult personality in this family,” Scott said. “He was larger than life. Like he somehow brainwashed these kids.”

The children currently live either in shelters or are staying with foster families, Scott said. The children are not all together, but are in small groups.

They are doing as well as can be expected, police said.

Spanking your children is illegal in Iowa? Good thing I wasn't raised in Iowa or I would have been taken away from my parents, I use to get my ass whooped all the day time, and I deserved every spanking I got.

The attempted sexual assault is alarming and if it's true I hope the mom stands by her daughter and gets her the help she needs to start recovering.

True, I think the last spanking I got was when my cousin and I snuck out of the house when we were 12 and 13. We were suppose to be babysitting younger kids and we left them alone all night. My uncle busted our asses so hard we couldn't sit down.

And it just so happens to be on a story from my area.

It isn't illegal to spank your kids in Iowa. My mother worked on the Treatment side of CPS here for about 5 years. She worked in founded cases of abuse. Basically, if it leaves a mark 24 hours later, it is abuse. She told me she used to tell clients that spanking was ok, as long as it was with a bare hand over a clothed bottom and was no more than 3 swats. She had to stop saying that when a client did exactly that but left marks that lasted about a week.

I would think that if marks were visible at a shelter in Minnisota, it must've been more than a regular spanking.

U.S. marshals have joined a nationwide search for a Des Moines man accused of sexually abusing three of his children, officials announced Tuesday.

There was at least one complaint made from one of Beaudrie’s children to West Des Moines police, and authorities said they believed there had been ongoing abuse in Minnesota, where the family is from.

Marshals said Beaudrie is interested in trading and game cards, such as “Magic: The Gathering” and “Yu-Gi-Oh.” He might be traveling the country attending conventions and trade shows for these cards, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a news release.

A convention was held in Salt Lake City shortly before his van was found there. Beaudrie reportedly had told his family he was going to a convention when he left Des Moines for the last time more than two weeks ago.

Before then, he had been cooperating with law enforcement, police said.

Beaudrie’s wife, Kijua Beaudrie, 35, was arrested Monday and faces three charges of neglect of a dependent person. She made her first court appearance Tuesday morning at the Polk County Jail. District Court Judge Cynthia Moisan set a $30,000 bond.

Moisan also ordered Kijua Beaudrie to have no contact with any of her children.

“You can’t call them, write them, email them, text them, Facebook, Twitter, no contact,” Moisan said.

It was pointed out to me that James looks a lot like Bluto from the Popeye comics. I have also been hearing that he is a big "geek" in regards to Magic:The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh. He was supposedly at a convention before he disappeared in Utah. The Facebook page for the Des Moines Gamesip had something a few days before he took off saying that they were temporarlly closing the store.

If I wasn't posting via my phone, I could give the urls. All the information I am getting is from the local news stations and the Des Moines Register along with me checking out their FB page.

A nationwide manhunt for a Des Moines father, James Beaudrie, ended in Chicago Thursday morning.

U.S. Marshals said they found Beaudrie about 7 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 4400 block of North Lawndale Avenue in Chicago.

Officials said address came to light during an investigation as a possible address for Beaudrie’s mother.

Officials said Beaudrie had fled through a rear door of the apartment moments before they entered the apartment. They said Beaudrie was attempting to hide under a stairwell of the apartment complex.

All trace of a game-oriented business run by an alleged fugitive sex offender has disappeared from Merle Hay Mall less than three days after Des Moines police went public with their search for the store owner.

GameSip, a business formerly run from a lower-level store off the mall’s central court, was boarded over this morning – although the lights behind the facade were on and merchandise appeared to still be inside.

The store closed apparently for good on Monday after Des Moines police arrested Kijua Beaudrie, 35, on three counts of neglecting a dependent person.

I do too and as a matter of fact a few years ago I had a picture of my then 12 year old holding my son who was about a month old at the time and someone I went to school with and recently added to my friends left me a comment on how I how much I've changed and I don't look at all how they remembered. They apparently didn't bother to look at all my pictures. I had to laugh and inform her that the picture was actually my daughter. She really thought at first it was me. It's an easy mistake to make I suppose.

I have a very funny mental picture of this 400lbs waste of skin and air hiding under a staircase. I'm picturing his rolls sticking out from under there while he is desprately trying to hold his breath but instead he was so winded from "running" that they found him by following the wheezing sound.

Eh, i think high school english stuck with me more than i thought!

I always wanted my poems to rhyme & haiku prevents this from happening! I read the 2nd line over & over to check if I added an 8th syllable in my head, I wanted it to BE so bad!! It's the little things that amuse me....
