DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police have taken a suspected rapist into custody on Detroit's west side.
Sources tell 7 Action News the 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody just a few blocks from where he allegedly attempted to rape a woman and then shot her.

Officers say the woman was walking her baby daughter in her stroller when she was approached by a man carrying a gun. Police say she was forced behind a vacant home on Lyndon.
Witnesses say the woman was able to get away and run back around the home, and that's when she was shot in the back as she ran away.

Police are telling 7 Action News that the suspect is believed to be responsible for at least two other assault..

Sources are also saying he is also suspected in a murder that happened earlier this week in Stoepel Park.

The six-month-old girl was found uninjured in the back yard. One officer held her, while other investigators retrieved evidence from the back yard.
"It's so sad," said Therese Sartor, who was in the neighborhood visiting friends. "Look at that baby over there. A momma and her baby can't go down the street in the middle of the day."

A Detroit police officer holds a six-month-old baby girl after her mother was shot

DETROIT (WJBK) -- [...]
The woman in intense pain and barely conscience was lifted onto a stretcher -- her beautiful baby girl in a stroller watching it all as she was comforted by a female police officer.

"I heard 'take off your clothes,' and then he's like 'you scream, I'm going to shoot you,'" says witness Miguel Marshall.

The 15-year-old heard and saw the whole thing. The woman was going for a walk with her baby when a man forced her at gunpoint into the backyard of an abandoned house. The man told her to undress, so she did, even taking off her bra, but before she took off her underwear she screamed for help. Another woman answered her call.

"I heard somebody screaming 'help me, help me, somebody help me.' My daughter was beating on the door really, really bad, so I opened the door and my daughter was like 'he shot her, he shot her,'" she says. "We saw the blood and she turned to her side and it was in her back, and she kept saying 'give me my baby, my baby.'"

"She said she was walking her baby and this guy approached her and made them go in the backyard a couple of doors down and made her take her clothes off and he was going to rape her and she took off running and that's when he shot her in the back."

This woman says the victim gave her a cell phone number and asked her to call the baby's grandmother. She says her daughter made that call while she applied pressure to the victim's wound as instructed by EMS.

Police say the woman was shot with a large caliber handgun. The bullet was dangerously close to her spine.

As the ambulance rushed to Sinai-Grace Hospital, a DPD officer stayed with the baby on the scene while trying to calm that baby's grandmother on the phone, trying to explain a tragedy no one can understand.

DPD arrested a suspect minutes after the crime. They recovered the gun used at the scene and police dogs traced his scent in the backyard. Neighbors are relieved he's in jail, but when is enough, enough?

A WOMAN out for a walk with her six-month-old baby remain in critical condition after being shot in the back as she fled a would-be rapist in a Detroit street.
The unnamed woman was walking in Detroit's west side yesterday afternoon with her baby girl when a man forced her at gunpoint into the backyard of an abandoned house and ordered her to undress, myFOXdetroit.com reported.

On April 12, 2012, at approximately 12:15 p.m., it is alleged that Hughley assaulted a 36-year-old Detroit mother walking with her child in a stroller when he took her at gun point to the rear of 19300 Lyndon and attempted to sexually assault her. When she attempted to run from the defendant it is alleged that he shot her in the back with a hand gun. The victim ran to the front of the location where she and the child were assisted by bystanders. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and is being treated for her injuries. The child was found unharmed and is in the custody of relatives. The defendant has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder (Life or Any term of years), Kidnapping ( Life or Any term of Years), Assault w/Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct (10 years), Felonious Assault (4 years), Felon in Possession of a Firearm (5 years), and Felony Firearm ( 2 years Mandatory Consecutive).

Job Carlyn Hughley, 18, of Detroit was charged Friday in three separate sex assaults, including the attack on the mother pushing her stroller in broad daylight Thursday. Earlier incidents in which he’s charged include the attack of a 22-year-old woman April 10 near Cody Middle School, and a multiple-act sex attack of a 20-year-old woman April 4 at Grand River and Warwick.

Hughley has been charged with assault with intent to murder — which carries up to life in prison — and first-degree criminal sexual conduct in addition to multiple charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, felonious assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm.

“I have not seen allegations of an attempted rape on a mother simply trying to take her child for a stroll in all my years of working in criminal justice,” Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “Because of the diligent work of the Detroit Police Department and my office, Hughley is now charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct and other serious charges relating to three different women.”

The April 10 incident happened near the Southfield Service Drive and West Warren, police said, where Hughley allegedly sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman near Cody Middle School. Prosecutors said he approached the victim and took her at gun point to the side of the school, where he sexually assaulted her.

He then took her to several other locations where he sexually assaulted her, police said. After the assault he fled the location and she immediately reported the attack to the authorities.

The first incident in which he’s charged happened at about 7 p.m. April 4, 2012 near Grand River and Warwick, where he allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old woman. The woman was walking, police said, when she was approached by Hughley, who allegedly put a gun to her back and ordered her to go with him to an alley behind a vacant house.

“He sexually assaulted her multiple times,” Worthy said, adding that after the assault, he fled on foot. The victim immediately notified the authorities.

Hughley is expected to be arraigned at noon Saturday, April 14, in 36th District Court on all three cases.

Jobe Hughley says raising his grandson for the last 12 years has been difficult. He says Job has been in and out of mental health facilities for years due to his anger issues and fighting.
Jobe Hughley believes many of his grandson's problems stem from a brain injury he suffered when he was a little boy. He adds that Job has also felt abandoned by his parents who died from natural causes when he was very young.
Last year, while receiving treatment in a mental health facility, 18-year-old Hughley allegedly attacked a guard and a psychiatrist.
Although he attended church with his grandmother for many years, Jobe Hughley says their grandson, who is very smart and articulate, calls himself a "satanist".

Job Carlyn Hughley sat quietly in the 36th District Court as Magistrate Sidney Barthwell read the charges, including 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of attempted rape, multiple counts of weapons possession, multiple kidnapping counts and one count of attempted murder.

He refused to tell the court his name, prompting his court-appointed attorney, Evan Callanan to intervene and plead for his client’s cooperation.

“This is not going to accomplish anything,” Callanan said.

A plea of not guilty was entered on Hughley’s behalf and bond was set at $5 million per case for the three cases.

“Mr. Hughley represents the highest level of danger to the community,” Barthwell said.

I wonder the same shit all the time. I don't live far from Detroit. The place is a wreck. Violence is just normal and accepted there. It's sad when a mother can't walk down the street in the middle of the day without being shot. Babies shot in drive by's, babies shot by stray bullets. Women disappear never to be found. All kinds of crazy out of Detroit. As for the kid being 18 years old. He's the product of his enviroment. The behavior is passed down from generation to generation. The kids today watch the violence happening and that's what they learn and that's all they know. I can't imagine living in my own home running for cover several times a day/night when gunshots ring out. Living in fear constantly. Still not out of the woods

DETROIT (WJBK) -- In an exclusive, off-camera interview, the mother of an attempted rape victim, a young mother shot in the back while walking with her baby, told us her daughter is still fighting for her life.

She is in critical condition and still unable to breathe on her own.

A Facebook page with the victim's name and pictures sheds light on who she is. It is full of spiritual messages. One says, "God is love! And if you love him you will love yourself and everyone around you!"

Under arrest for the vicious attack is 18-year-old Job Hughley. Police say before shooting this woman in the back, he raped two other women, one on April 4 and the other on April 10.

The day before that, police believe he murdered Mike Cavanaugh in cold blood while he was taking a nap in Stoepel Park.

"He did confess to killing my brother, but gave no reason why. Just said he did," Kathy Johnson told us.

Johnson said prosecutors are working on a warrant to file formal charges for her brother's murder and she'll be at all of Hugley's court appearances.

"Why would you do this to him, to shoot him like that?" Johnson said she would ask if she takes the stand. "He didn't do anything to anybody. The whole thing just makes no sense. I want to know why."

Cavanaugh's father is a retired Detroit firefighter. He has fought flames and survived a stroke just to bury his own son. Even though he can no longer speak, the look on his face says it all.

Meanwhile, people in the community say they still walk the streets with fear. Many told us that they carry guns, knives and even pepper spray just to go to the mailbox not knowing what they will face.

Job Hughley is charged with sexual assaults in 3 different cases

DETROIT -
A Detroit mother says she was robbed while pushing her young daughter in a stroller, sexually assaulted behind a vacant house and shot in the back when she fled.

The woman testified Thursday in the preliminary exam of 18-year-old Job Hughley.

Hughley is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and assault with intent to murder in the April 12 daylight attack.
The 37-year-old woman testified that she was accosted on a northwest Detroit street and gave her attacker two $100 bills before being forced at gunpoint to push the stroller several blocks before the rape attempt.

But when Hughley told her he wasn’t finished, “My stomach dropped. I was in fear,” the woman said.

“I got towards the corner and that’s when I felt the sting in my back and I dropped,” she said.

The baby was not injured but the woman spent two weeks in the hospital.
“I don’t have the bottom part of my lung on the right side,” the woman said.

After several outbursts during the test, the victim’s mother was held in contempt of court and removed.

Hughley also will stand trial in two separate rapes.

One woman said she was raped in an alley. The other said she was raped near a school.

On April 10, 2012, at approximately 5:50 p.m., it is alleged that Hughley sexually assaulted a 22-yer-old female in the area of the Southfield Service Drive near West Warren near Cody Middle School. He then took her to several other locations where he sexually assaulted her.

After the assault he fled the location and she immediately reported the attack to the authorities. The defendant has been charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree (Life), Kidnapping (Life), Felon in Possession of a Firearm (5 years), and Felony Firearm ( 2 years Mandatory Consecutive).


On April 4, 2012, at approximately 7:00 p.m., it is alleged that Hughley sexually assaulted a 20-year-old female.
