A Louisiana woman could have gotten off on a minor charge for shoplifting -- instead she's being hunted by police for allegedly using a stun gun on a mall cop and then fleeing, leaving behind a baby she was caring for.

Brittany London, 31, was caught shoplifting Saturday at a mall in Kenner while pushing a stroller, cops told WWL.

When confronted, London allegedly disabled the cop using a stun gun and then fled in a Honda Accord. The stroller and the baby -- who is estimated to be 6 to 8 months old -- were left behind.

Cops are reportedly still looking for London, but an unidentified mother came forward to claim the baby, and said that London had been its babysitter. Officers wouldn't return the baby until an investigation is complete, because the mother wasn't being forthcoming about who was babysitting the toddler, according to WDSU.

Investigators say the mother has now been arrested and faces charges in the case.

The Kenner Police Department says they have now identified a shoplifting suspect who used a stun gun on a mall security guard before fleeing and abandoning an infant.

Investigators say 31-year-old New Orleans resident Brittany G. London (pictured above) is the woman who assaulted a security guard with a stun gun at the Esplanade Mall Saturday night.

According to police, London was in the Gymboree store in the mall with an infant in a stroller. When the guard confronted her after seeing London shoplifting, officials say the woman disabled the guard with a stun gun and fled in a gold Honda Accord, leaving the child behind.

London was not the baby's mother, and the child's mother reportedly contacted authorities to get the child back after Child Protective Services took custody.

The guard was not seriously injured, police say.

London faces charges of Child Desertion, Aggravated Battery and Theft.

Police said the woman fled, pushing the stroller with the baby inside. She was chased to the parking lot where officers said she got into a gold Honda Accord. The woman left the baby and fled the scene, police said.
The African-American baby, who investigators said was estimated to be between 6 to 8 months old, was placed in protective custody until a relative could be located.

Johnson came forward, claiming to be the child's mother. However, police said Johnson wasn't forthcoming in identifying the person who left her child behind and alone. As of Monday afternoon after Johnson recanted London as the suspect, she said it was her sister-in-law, Charbaney Smith, who left her baby behind after the incident.
“OCS is concerned not only where the child is going to go, but what kind of responsible parent is going to say, ‘Oh, it wasn't me. Someone else had my child.’ But then not know a whole lot about the person that had their child?” McInnis said.
Police said the woman would have only faced a misdemeanor shoplifting charge, but now will face felony charges, including child endangerment and aggravated battery.
Johnson now faces a charge of obstruction of justice, falsely identifying London as the suspect.
London's father, Henry Carter, said he is furious with the situation and his anger is turned toward the investigation by police.

It all happened Saturday night at*Esplande Mall after an employee at Gymboree watched a woman stealing items from the store as she pushed a baby boy in a stroller. The employee confronted the woman, along with a security*guard, and was in the process of calling her manager when the woman shot the*guard with a stun gun and took of running while pushing the stroller. She was pursued into the mall parking lot where she jumped in a vehicle and fled the scene — leaving the baby in the parking lot. The 2-month-old*baby was taken into protective custody until his mother,*Stephanie Johnson, came forward and told police that the woman who abandoned her baby at the mall was the child’s babysitter,*a woman named*Brittany London. After being alerted that her name was being trashed on Facebook and Twitter, London went to police herself and informed them that she didn’t know Johnson “at all” and that Johnson may have gotten her name off Facebook. “She says that she’s friends with a friend who’s friends with me or one of her friends is friends with me. I don’t know how she got to my page,” London said. “I’m definitely deleting my Facebook page. I don’t need that no more.” For her lie, Johnson was arrested and charged with obstruction, injuring public records and inconsistent statements. Police would also announce they did have a new suspect*– Johnson’s 24-year-old sister-in-law,*Charbaney Smith. She was the woman who was babysitting the boy that weekend and the woman Johnson was protecting. The security guard who got stunned was able to identify Smith from a photo line-up and police*obtained a warrant for her arrest on charges of**child endangerment and aggravated battery. According to police, she already had warrants ou ton her for theft and simple battery. The boy is currently in the custody of his maternal grandmother.
