A Knoxville man is charged with killing his girlfriend and their young daughter.
According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Jorge Molina-Rivera, 28, of Lake Brook Lane, is facing two counts of first degree murder. He is being held on a $2 million dollar bond.
Deputies responded to a home under construction on Rogers Island Lane in West Knox County on Sunday afternoon just before 3:30 pm. They found the bodies of the woman and child in a van, along with Molina-Rivera, who was unresponsive.
The home belongs to Dean Rice, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett's Chief of staff.
"My wife and I had just taken some family members up to see the house and saw the van parked there," Rice said. "It looked just like a van that was from a construction worker had left over the weekend."
After being treated at UT Medical Center, Molina-Rivera later told investigators he strangled the woman and child with a rope after an argument with his girlfriend. He then cut his arms and neck.
"Its horrible, its absolutely a tragedy. How anyone could possibly dream of doing that to a child, a girlfriend, a wife, whatever the situation was, nothing would justify that," Rice said.
Rice says he checked with the contractors working on the house to see if Molina-Rivera was subcontracted to do work.
