Denise Wilder Arrested In Death Of Her 2-Year-Old

    Denise Marie Wilder
    April 7 2012
ROSEVILLE, CA - The mother of a 2 year old who died in Roseville Wednesday has been arrested for her death, according to the Roseville Police Department.
The child was identified by the Placer County coroner as McKinley Gail Wilder.
Denise Marie Wilder, 37, of Roseville, was arrested on suspicion of homicide and child endangerment, said Officer Dee Dee Gunther.
According to Wilder's former sister-in-law, Joni Starratt, Wilder and her children disappeared on Sunday but were not reported missing until Wednesday by Wilder's parents.
It was around that time a family friend went to check on Wilder and the children, discovered the toddler was not breathing, and contacted police, said Gunther.
Emergency personnel responded to the home on the 300 block of Diamond Oaks Road around 5:07 p.m. Upon their arrival, the toddler was declared dead and Wilder appeared intoxicated, Gunther said.
Wilder's other child, a 5-year-old girl, was taken by Child Protective Services after being medically cleared. She was later released to family, said Gunther.
Wilder and her husband divorced in December 2011 and Wilder was awarded primary custody of their two children, said Starratt.
Wilder's ex-husband Mark Wilder wrote on his Facebook page Thursday morning, "Thank you all. The system allowed this beautiful baby girl to be killed. Your love means so much to her big sister Kennedy and myself. I love everyone of you."
In a later post Wilder wrote, "My ex-wife has been formally charged with murder. She is sitting in the county jail, pending arraignment, NO BAIL. This woman murdered her own 2 year old daughter.

AUBURN — A Roseville woman arrested on suspicion of murdering her 2-year-old child last week was released from custody Monday afternoon.
Denise Marie Wilder, 37, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of homicide and child endangerment in connection with the death of her daughter, McKinley Wilder.
The Placer County District Attorney’s Office said Monday it would hold off on charging Wilder until it receives a final report from the Placer County Coroner’s Office.
Wilder’s defense attorney Jess Bedore said outside the Auburn jail Monday that there are
too many unknown questions in the case.
“If they had enough evidence to charge her, she’d be charged and she wouldn’t be walking out of jail,” Bedore said. “This tells you that there is no evidence.”
Lynnette Low of the Placer County District Attorney’s Office said a final autopsy report for the case could take anywhere from six to eight weeks to be completed.
Dee Dee Gunther of the Roseville Police Department said police had probable cause to arrest Wilder due to the highly suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the child.
“We stand by that decision,” Gunther said. “(The District Attorney’s Office) is not dismissing charges. They are delaying filing charges until they get more information from the autopsy report.”
Just after 5 p.m. on April 4, Roseville police and fire crews were called out to a home in the 300 block of Diamond Oaks Road to a report of a child not breathing.
Upon arrival to the home, emergency crews found Wilder intoxicated and her 2-year-old child deceased, police said.
Wilder’s other child, a 5-year-old girl, was also at the scene and released to the custody of Child Protective Services. She has since been placed with family.
The home where the deceased child was found belongs to the children’s grandparents, who were away from home at the time.
According to Gunther, the children’s grandparents called police that morning to report they had not heard from Wilder or their grandchildren for a couple days and they were “concerned.”
Wilder appeared in court at the Auburn jail Monday afternoon, wearing a red jumpsuit and handcuffs.
She smiled slightly when presiding judge Larry Gaddis stated the court was releasing her on her own recognizance because a formal complaint has yet to be filed.
Outside, family members and friends close to the case huddled together as they exited the courtroom, refusing to comment to reporters.
Wilder’s next court appearance is scheduled for 1 p.m., May 8 in Department 13 at the Auburn jail.

Roseville Mother Barred From Attending Daughter’s Funeral
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – A Roseville mother under investigation after her 2-year-old daughter was found dead in her care has been barred from attending the girl’s funeral.

Mark Wilder successfully petitioned for a temporary restraining order against his ex-wife, Denise Wilder, 37. earlier this week in Placer County Superior Court.
The order issued Monday states that Denise Wilder must stay 500 feet away from any memorial or funeral for her daughter McKinley, who was found dead at her grandparents’ Roseville home on April 4. The order also protects Mark Wilder and the couple’s other daughter, 5, and gives him access to the children’s property not deemed evidence in the homicide investigation.

A statement signed by Mark Wilder on the restraining order says: “We know that McKinley had been dead long enough for decomposition to begin. And, finally, we know that petitioner never called 911 for help despite having hours – perhaps days -to do so.”

Denise Wilder was arrested on suspicion of homicide but released from custody on Monday. The District Attorney’s Office says it is waiting on autopsy results for the toddler before deciding on charges against her mother, who police say was drunk when they responded to the home in the 300 block of Diamond Oaks Road and found the child unresponsive.

The couple’s other daughter, 5, is now in the custody of Mark Wilder

S***, I just can't get past feeling really sorry for the 5 year old girl, stuck in that house and probably knowing exactly what happened; and that her mother only called the emergency services after taking hours (or days) to consider.

    Ewww... dead for days?

A family court hearing has offered the first glimpse into the scene in which Roseville toddler McKinley Wilder was found dead earlier this month.

In a sworn statement, the child's father, Mark Wilder, reveals that not only was his ex-wife Denise McGraw Wilder "extremely intoxicated" when the police arrived, but that 2-year-old McKinley had been dead long enough for decomposition to begin.

"We know that she (Denise Wilder) never called 911 for help despite having hours – perhaps days – to do so," Mark Wilder argued in support of extending a temporary restraining order barring his ex-wife from contact with him or their 5-year-old child.
    [...]

Mark Wilder's attorney Mark Haskell said authorities first believed the discoloration on McKinley's abdomen was the result of trauma. Haskell said authorities later determined it was the early stages of decomposition.

On the same day Denise Wilder was released from custody, her ex-husband sought and received a restraining order barring her from coming within 500 feet of him or their daughter.

The restraining order was upheld Thursday in a closed court hearing by Superior Court Judge Frances Kearney despite Denise Wilder's statements pointing out the lack of evidence against her.

"I was released from custody, in light of the fact that no charges had been filed against me," Denise Wilder writes in a statement opposing the restraining order.

"At the current time, the reason and/or cause of McKinley's death is unknown to the forensic pathologist who performed her autopsy and to law enforcement. My criminal defense attorney, Jess C. Bedore III, has advised me that the forensic pathologist can not at this time establish cause of death and that the autopsy performed on McKinley was inconclusive as to the cause of death," stated Denise Wilder.

Haskell said calling the report inconclusive distorts the facts given that the final coroner's report, with toxicology information, has not been completed.
    [...]

Denise Wilder's statement also reveals that McKinley's body is being preserved in the morgue for possible further testing.

McKinley had been dead long enough for decomposition to begin.
I know that what is usually meant by this is that decomposition was visibly under way, but I hate this phrasing. Decomposition starts as soon as the heart stops beating, so this kind of wording really isn't specific.

Grandpa arrested on child porn charges:

Daniel Harrison McGrath, 58, of Roseville was arrested Friday. McGrath's granddaughter, McKinley Wilder, was found dead in his Diamond Oaks Road home on April 4.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, McGrath knowingly possessed visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

During the investigation into the death of his granddaughter at his residence, law enforcement officials seized numerous laptop computers, thumb drives, VHS tapes and CDs that contained graphic depictions of minors involved in sex acts. Officials estimated there were some 3,000 images and videos of child pornography.

Some VHS tapes appeared to be hidden camera footage of his nude daughters inside a Rocklin home.
    [...]

During an interview with Roseville Police on April 5, detectives informed McGrath that they would be searching his computer and other items in the house.

McGrath then reportedly told detectives, "You are going to go on (the computer) and see some underage stuff," according to the criminal complaint.
    http://auburnjournal.com/detail/207948.html

At the time, McGrath and his wife were out of the country. McGrath's daughter Denise Wilder and her two daughters were staying at the home on the 300 block of Diamond Oaks Road while the couple was out of town.
    [...]

One VHS tape showed two hidden camera videos of victims that appear to have been taken while McGrath and his family lived in the 5500 block of Lea Court in Rocklin at least 18 years ago.

The camera was hidden in a bathroom and bedroom and shows the victims nude. According to the complaint, the victims appeared to be minors at the time the hidden camera video was taken.

The VHS tape also shows several videos that appear to be taken from outside of unsuspecting adult women's windows. The videos captured the women as they undressed, changed their clothes or used the bathroom. A time stamp on one of the videos shows it was taken in August 1991 at 1:56 a.m.

The identity of the women and their location during the video footage is unknown, but detectives believe the architecture of the homes in the videos is consistent with the architecture of the Rocklin neighborhood where McGrath lived.
    [...]

According to the complaint, McKinley Wilder "appeared to have suffered some type of injury to her abdominal area as there was bruising in this area."

McGrath reported Wilder and her children missing after getting a phone call from Wilder's boss, who said Wilder hadn't come to work the past few days, according to the complaint.

Not that I'm saying it's any excuse, but yeah, that whole scenario probably played into the murderer's motive somehow. What a shock stunner revelation to come out.

I just immediately got a Josh Powell vibe when I read the article about the Grandad being arrested for child porn charges. Like seriously man what the fuck is with these old men pervy perv Gramps? Why? And the fact that it's tapes of his daughters makes it just that more despicable!

A Roseville woman has been arrested for a second time in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter, McKinley Wilder.

Denise Marie McGrath Wilder, 37, was arrested Friday afternoon by Roseville police detectives. She was booked into Placer County jail on suspicion of cruelty to a child by abuse, neglect or endangering health under circumstances likely to produce great bodily harm or death.

Wilder also is accused of child abuse and endangerment under circumstances likely to produce great bodily harm or death in connection with the alleged abuse and neglect of her 5-year-old daughter, according to a Roseville Police Department news release.

Wilder is being held without bail.
    [...]

Police said the completed report determined that McKinley Wilder died of acute alcohol toxicity and acute malnutrition.

    - A Roseville mother, who was arrested in connection with the death of her toddler, was granted bail of $500,000 from a Placer County judge on Thursday.
    [...]

"She showed zero remorse, no concern for her living daughter and refused the only comfort item the child asked to have. Each night, she would cry that she wanted her teddy bear, Rupert," said the toddler's father, Mark Wilder, during the bail hearing on Thursday.

Mark Wilder told the court he was concerned for the welfare of Wilder's 5-year-old daughter, telling the court she woke up screaming in the middle of the night, worried her mother would try to hurt her.

"The child suffers horribly," he said. "Lately she has expressed that she wishes to die and be with McKinley."
    [...]
    http://roseville.news10.net/news/cri...om-500000-bail

Denise Wilder appeared to be in good spirits as she was smiling to herself and even laughed and joked with bailiffs before her hearing Thursday.

Denise’s estranged husband Mark Wilder wouldn’t talk on camera but inside the Placer County Courtroom he told the judge Denise should never see the light of day again.

In a statement he said Kennedy, their 5-year-old daughter who Denise is also accused of abusing, “Fears her mom is going to come and kill her.”

Mark says, “Kennedy has only slept through the night since Denise has been in jail. She asks every night if her mom is still behind bars.”

And the 5-year-old girl says, “She wishes she had died instead of 2-year-old Mckinley, because her sister was just a baby.

Prosecutors called the 37-year-old Denise a flight risk and a danger to the community, citing a pattern of alleged substance abuse dating back to April 4, the day officers found Mckinley dead under Denise’s care at a family home.

The Roseville mom, prosecutors say, had a blood-alcohol content of .20. An autopsy shows little Mckinley died of malnutrition and alcohol poisoning.

But Denise allegedly continued abusing alcohol even after her daughter’s death.

CBS13 learned she checked into the hospital June 4 with a blood-alcohol content of .32, nearly enough to put her in a coma.
She also tested positive for cocaine.

Denise’s defense said in court there are a lot of unanswered questions about Mckinley’s death.

But her attorney argued that Denise should be allowed bail because she isn’t a flight risk and has no criminal record.
    [...]

If Denise posts bail, she’ll be supervised by law enforcement and be required to undergo treatment for substance abuse.

Poor baby just wanted to be like mommy. Too bad mommy was so fucked up she didnt even think about the sweethearts.

    Possible scenario....
Mom got totally wasted and ignored the kids, didn't feed them. Leaving alcohol where the kids could get it, since she probably passed out, and they were hungry and thirsty. Anytime she walked (or stumbled) by her baby girl lying on the floor, she assumed she was asleep. (She was too drunk to notice much) And baby died because this douche couldn't care enough to take care of her babies.

Our judicial system runs on the premise of "innocent until proven guilty". Defendants aren't drunk irresponsible murderous bitches until they get convicted.

It's an important part of the legal process and everyone has a right to it. Pretrial incarceration isn't a part of our legal punishment. We don't punish innocent people... which she is in the eyes of the law. Her guilt may be plain to see but justice is blind until her conviction. I wouldn't want it any other way... just in case I get jailed and I'm innocent.
