Gregory Todd proposed to Tiffany Baillie as she awaits sentencing for stabbing him.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...courtroom.html

A chef who was knifed in the back by his girlfriend while he was sleeping proposed to her in court through her barrister.

Gregory Todd, 48, bought a diamond ring to the courtroom as Tiffany Baillie, 32, admitted carrying out the attack on him.

He almost died after she plunged a 12-inch kitchen knife into him and had to undergo emergency surgery.

But Grogory says he has forgiven his partner and now wants to marry her.

Baillie was remanded in custody at Hull Crown Court after her barrister said Todd had brought a ring to court and wanted to propose.

Now the chef must wait until Wednesday to find out if she will say yes.

Mr Todd insists his partner carried out the attack as he slept in their flat in Hessle, Humberside, because she had lost two babies.
    [...]

'I wanted to give her the ring but they won't allow it in prison. I hoped she would get a suspended sentence, so I could propose today.

'She had a miscarriage and lost our baby two weeks before this happened and it was the anniversary of the day she lost her son Lucas who was 10 weeks old. We were both upset. Now I just want her home.'
    [...]

He said: 'This just isn’t like her. She doesn’t need to be locked up, she needs help. There were a lot of signs, which maybe I should have picked up on, but I didn’t.

'If somebody I didn’t know stabbed me in the street, I would want them hung, drawn and quartered.

'But I don’t hold this against her at all. Seeing her in prison is my worst nightmare.'
    [...]

Baillie admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Jharna Jobes, prosecuting, said the sentencing range for similar cases is nine to 16 years, with a typical starting point of 12 years.

Mr Genney said: 'What is very unusual is the complainant asking for leniency. Most victims would want you to lock them up and throw away the key.

'He says he wants to marry her and has brought an engagement ring to court.'

Judge Mettyear said: 'This is a very difficult case. The guidelines suggest I should impose a very long sentence, but I have to consider how much weight I can give to the views of your victim.'

The biggest question being of course, how you can protect the victim in this case against himself.

    Abroad,

You nailed it in the head. It's like domestic violence - just this time the victim's the guy instead of a gal that is most commonly heard about. Something tells me he fears her if she does stay for a long time and hopes to soothe things over by promising to be her punchbag until death....

Definitely something's amiss - he needs IMO to be take off those rose-tinted glasses and next time the missed 'warning signs' appear, get her help, and I'd even say learn about the quieter warning signs as well.

Bizarre. He's 16 years her senior. I imagine he willfully ignored the "signs" because, hey, he's a man. A man of a slightly older generation where being all touchy feely wasn't the IN thing. He probably expected her to buck up and get past it on her own. Then she got his attention and now he's taking it seriously. But, by now, she probably is past the worst of it. (I mean, he is recovered and we don't really know when the attack occurred, but it's now been to court, so it's been a while.)

We also don't know what she thinks about the whole thing. Maybe she's sorry. But maybe she's waiting an opportunity to finish the job. She might, after all, feel that the losses were also due to his inability to focus on her needs and respond to her emotional state. Hmmm. I'm making up a great story in my head.

I'd be watching my back the next time she burned the beans....I know that losing a baby is much more serious stress, it will take less and less stress to set her off, I don't know if I could ever close my eyes to sleep with her around! Best of luck to ya, Mate!

Although Baillie, 32, was jailed for three years over the attack, Mr Todd's heartfelt appeal did not fall entirely on deaf ears as the judge said his total forgiveness represented powerful mitigation.

Mr Todd, 48, like his partner a chef, wrote to Judge Michael Mettyear promising he would 'not let you down' if Baillie was allowed to walk free from court.

The judge told Baillie - who pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent at a previous hearing - the usual sentence for comparable offences was between nine and 16 years.
    [...]

Mr Todd, who was stabbed in his back while he slept at a flat he shared with Baillie in Trinity Court, Hessle, Hull, on December 4 last year, said he thought the judge had been 'very fair'.

'I'm not completely happy with the result but I think he was as lenient as he could be,' he said.

Last week he learned that his marriage proposal to Baillie, who has a 12-year-old son, had been accepted via her barrister.

Despite spending the last three months in hospital and requiring emergency surgery to save his life after sustaining damage to his colon, kidney and pancreas, Mr Todd said the stabbing was 'totally out of character' for Baillie.

'I've already put it behind me. I'm not going to hold any grudges. I can't change anything. It's done. I have lived and here I am,' he said.

'My life's come to a stop and Tiffany is in jail and she should be home.'

Mr Todd, who showed reporters outside Hull Crown Court the white gold and diamond engagement ring, added: 'I just want to be with Tiffany. That's all I can say.'
