Las Cruces parents arrested after kids test positive for cocaine

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police have arrested the parents of four Las Cruces children who recently tested positive for cocaine.
Eric Lee Estrada, 30, and Stacey Carreras, 26, both of 2250 Missouri Ave., were arrested Wednesday and are charged with four counts each of negligent child abuse.

Las Cruces Police detectives report that Child Protective Services was investigating the couple for illegal drug use because their children - ages 1, 2, 5 and 8 - had tested positive for cocaine in the past. A CPS report generated March 22 raised new concerns that Estrada and Carreras were smoking cocaine and possibly doing so in the presence of their children.

According to an LCPD news release, investigators discovered that sometime between January 27 and March 27 of this year, Estrada and Carreras both smoked cocaine in their home while their children were present. Drug tests performed on the children by a private laboratory revealed that they all tested positive for cocaine.

The children have been placed in the temporary custody of the state.

The parents of four Las Cruces children who recently tested positive for cocaine were on probation at the time of their arrests last week, according to the New Mexico Corrections Department.

Stacey Carreras, 26, had been placed on probation on March 25 after being charged with four counts of child abuse, negligently cause (no death or great bodily harm).

Eric Lee Estrada, 30, was placed on probation in December 2011 after being charged with three counts of child abuse, negligently cause (no death or great bodily harm).

Estrada reported as required to his probation officer in Las Cruces until March, after which he was referred to Drug Court, a higher level of supervision. He then reported to a probation officer a Drug Court Judge, and was eligible for random drug testing.
