CEDAR SPRINGS, MI – Unrequited affection between teens ended with the death of Xena, the tiny Yorkshire terrier and Pomeranian mix, police say.

Brandon Stephens, now 20, broke into the home of Chelsea Potter, whom he dated off and on in high school and beat the seven-pound dog to death in the family kitchen, according to allegations made in Kent County District Court records.

Stephens then took the dog out into the road in the 13000 block of Pine Lake Avenue NE and tried to make it look like the tiny dog was killed by a vehicle traveling near 16 Mile Road, according to Kent County investigators.

But 45-year-old Kimberly Potter – the mother of the object of Stephens’ alleged obsession -- said blood and other evidence in her kitchen made it obvious the dog had been killed there.

“It’s hard to talk about,” said the elder Potter who said she had owned Xena since she was a puppy nine years ago. “She was such a precious part of our lives."

According to Deputy John DeGroot, Stephens admitted he killed the dog, but said it was an accident.

“There’s no way it was an accident,” Kimberly Potter said.

In her request for a personal protection order – commonly called a restraining order – against Stephens, Chelsea Potter wrote that she broke up with Stephens three weeks prior to the Feb. 20 incident. The teen wrote that Stephens stalked her at school, left gifts in her car and said he’d kill himself if she left him.

”(After) the whole incident that is happening with my dog, I feel so unsafe in my household,” Potter wrote. "I’m just very scared.”

The court approved the restraining order and now Stephens faces charges of second-degree home invasion, a felony with a maximum of 15 years in prison, and killing or torture of an animal, which has a four-year maximum prison penalty.

Stephens has a $10,000 bond and his case has been sent to Kent County Circuit Court where he faces a trial unless he reaches an agreement with the prosecutor’s office.
