NEW ROCHELLE — A 19-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested in New Rochelle after he cut his girlfriend’s 35-year-old mother with a Samurai-style sword and beat up her husband, police said.
Tom Lopez, of 51 Junius St., Brooklyn, was apparently staying at his girlfriend’s John Street home Tuesday evening when a domestic dispute began at about 6 p.m., New Rochelle Detective Captain Joseph Schaller said.
During an argument with his 15-year-old girlfriend, with whom he has a four-month-old son, and her parents, Lopez pulled the sword from a wall rack in the apartment and on inflicted a three-inch cut on his girlfriend’s mother’s right elbow.
Lopez then knocked his girlfriend’s father to the ground and punched him numerous times.
As the assaults ended the parents told Lopez to leave.
Lopez was leaving the apartment with the mother following him down the steps when New Rochelle police arrived.
She yelled to police as they entered the building, “That's they guy.”
Lopez ran out the back of the building, but was quickly captured by the police, Schaller said.
As police were leaving with the suspect, a 37-year-old neighbor stopped them and told them that earlier in the day Lopez was holding his son outside the John Street home. He was yelling at children in the neighborhood, the neighbor told police. Lopez then tossed the child into the air and the boy was caught by an unidentified woman.
Lopez is charged with second-degree assault, a felony, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, resisting arrest and harassment, all misdemeanors.
