Mother Pulled Over With Baby Zipped in Purse

    I can't believe I found a picture of a baby in a purse!
U.S. Virgin Islands police say a woman was allegedly driving with her newborn baby zipped up in her purse.

A police statement says an officer pulled over a woman driving a pickup during a routine traffic stop Tuesday. While asking for the St. Croix woman's license, the officer reported hearing a baby crying but did not see a baby seat in the vehicle.

The motorist then allegedly unzipped a purse sitting on the seat next to her and revealed a tiny newborn.

Police say the woman told them that the baby girl was born at home a week ago and had no prenatal care. She was apparently driving the infant to a doctor.

Authorities rushed the newborn to a hospital. The mother may face criminal charges.

My purse only feels like it has a 7lb baby in it. Usually due to change that I just tossed in... and crusty Tic Tacs that escaped their case.

I probably have carried everything you can imagine in my purse over the years, especially when the kids were babies and the purse became the second diaper bag.

I was so proud of myself when my husband was doing something for my mom and said, "Wow, I really need a Phillips head screwdriver" and I pulled out one of those magnetic screwdriver handle jobbies with all the different head types included. I distinctly remember him asking me before why on earth I carried the screwdriver.

I told him that day at my mom's..... "Now you know."

Never EVER did I put one single baby in there. Never.

I never thought of this. Of course, my kids were almost 10 (son) and 9 pounds (daughter) and couldn't fit into the damn newborn onsies either and outgrew newborn diapers at an alarming rate. I gave those out as baby gifts for the next 2 years to friends who had normal size babies.

I like that picture above, but am having trouble with the woman inthe story who had the infant zipped up in her purse. Why zip it up? That seems a stupid question considering I am wondering why she had it in the purse at all, but still...I guess we should be thankful it wasn't in a plastic grocery bag. :P

It doesn't bode well for the baby that she had her in the purse zipped up. I find it unlikely she was headed to the doctor. I've been reading here too long. Why would you zip up a purse, risk suffocation to the baby? Thanks and kudos to the officer that discovered this and rescued that infant.

It's pretty bad when you have to tell someone they can't put their baby in their purse. I mean, tv, movies, the internet - the evidence of what TO DO is pretty much everywhere these days. So if you were raised by neandrethals - you can STILL do right by your kid!

PrincessGrandma - love that you had a screwdriver!
I won a baby shower game once for having the most items from the list provided. Currently I have a lego man, 2 acorns (there's no oaks around here), a lone sock & a half eaten sucker. And that could change any minute.

I have always hated carrying a purse, so I usually stick to a wallet that I can stick in my pocket, cause most of the time I had a baby, small child, diaper bag/grocery bag, sports equipment/anything else nobody wanted to carry. I told my oldest son once that I am his mother not a pack mule, they all thought it was funny, me, not so much.

Now my grandmother always carried her magic pocket book, anything you wanted or needed at anytime, she had it. But never any babies, didn't need anymore of those!

I picture Lurch from the Addams Family looking at that baby in the pocketbook just shaking his head and moaning!!!!

The woman was pulled over for a cracked windshield on Tuesday. While asking for her driver’s license, the police officer heard a baby crying but couldn’t see a baby or car seat in the vehicle. When the woman was asked for the infant’s location, she unzipped a purse sitting in the passenger and revealed a newborn. She told the police that she gave birth to the baby girl at home a week ago and claimed she was on the way to the hospital when she was pulled over. EMTs*arrived*on the*scene*and transported the baby girl to the hospital for evaluation. There’s been no reports on her condition. The mother was transported to the hospital as well, where other officers brought her a car seat to use.
