Christian University Shooting Leaves at Least 5 Dead

At least five poeople are dead after a gunman opened fire at Oikos University, a Christian school in Oakland, Calif., this morning.
According to police the gunman fired multiple shots in the school at 10:33 a.m. Police have not said how many people were killed or wounded, but aerial video from the scen shows five bodies laid out under sheets on the school lawn.
Police described the suspect as an Asian male, 5-foot-9, wearing tan pants, according ABC station KGO-TV in San Francisco.
Although police have reportedly detained one person, it is unclear if that person was the gunman or if there was a continued threat on campus.
One witness described a chaotic scene in the moments after the shooting. Brian Snow was at a nearby credit union, when he first heard the shots and saw a vicitim run out of the building.
"I just heard more gunshots. A lady came out running and she had blood on her arm, but I didn't know how bad the wound was," Snow told KGO Radio. "She was just trying to make sure everyone was safe and took off her jacket and she had a big old hole in her arm."

The shooting happened about 10:23 a.m. in a classroom at Oikos University, when the suspect came in and fired multiple shots, police said.

The school offers degrees in religious, musical and nursing fields, according to its website.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, said the shooter had previously been a nursing student at Oikos but was no longer enrolled. He was unsure whether the shooter had been expelled or dropped out voluntarily.

Kim did not see the shooting but heard about 30 gunshots. "I stayed in my office," he said, imitating the sound of rapid shots.

Students panicked and ran from the building when the shooting started, said Nam Gong Kyun, a 52-year-old English student from Korea.

Some witnesses outside the school when it happened said that a victim who had fled the building told them the shooter was in the classroom, stood up and shot another student in the chest, and then opened fire on the rest of the classroom.

Seven people died and three others were wounded in a shooting at a small California religious college Monday, Oakland police said.
An Asian male in his 40s was detained as a suspect, but he has not yet been charged in the shooting, according to police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
"We believe that this is the person," Watson said.
Police would not release the suspect's name or confirm his relationship to his victims or Oikos University in East Oakland, she said.
Several of the victims were students, Watson said.
Gunfire erupted inside the single-story building that houses the private Christian college about 10:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. ET), according to Lucas Garcia, who was teaching an English class when it began.
Garcia told CNN affiliate KGO-TV that he counted about six gunshots from a nearby nursing classroom when he heard someone yell, "He's got a gun."
Garcia evacuated his students from the building while the gunfire continued, he said.
The college, which caters to the Korean American Christian community, offers degrees in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine, according to its website.
The suspect was arrested outside a Safeway convenience store in nearby Alameda, California, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Henry Lee told CNN.

I went to a private Christian uni and there was so much fucking going on after hours in the parking lot it was ridiculous! I was too classy for car sex tho I used 2 sneak into my bf's dorm room lol. Thank God he stayed on the first floor and let me in thru the side door.
One time me and my friends swear we saw a dude getting head on the 3rd floor of the Social Sciences building. Sat there for a full 5min just to make sure our eyes weren't playing tricks on us and I'm pretty sure he was getting his knob polished.
And if you got caught making out by admins or other students they'd say you were boogin and call you boogers. Not gonna lie I had a lot of fun times aside from the mandatory Bible classes, that was a major drag.

I wonder what it was that threw this guy off the deep end? He's 40 something years old, it wasn't like anyone made him go to the damn school. If you don't like religion or become disillusioned for some reason well take that up with...God I guess if you still believe and if you don't well then that's no reason to take it out on others.
People rely way to heavily on man for their salvation and their understanding of God when (if you do believe that is) its up to you to study the bible for yourself and come to your own realizations about what is asked of you as a Christian. Coz at the end of the day Preachers, Priests, Pastors, Reverends, Elders, Deacons, Rabbis, Nuns etc. are just tools which God uses to get his message out to the world but they are just as fallible and likely to fall as anyone else. So it's unreasonable to hold them in a higher regard than any other person walking the earth. Crimes like this are meant to break peoples faith when in reality it just brings them together.

Idk what broke this guys brain, misplaced loyalties or a bad grade. Whatever it was seven people won't be home for supper tonight becoz of it and that's just sad.
Razors pain you, rivers are damp, acid stains you, drugs cause cramps, gun aren't lawful, nooses give, gas smells awful, you might as well live.

My daughter went to a Christian university. (http://www.umary.edu/) Their campus was no different than the public colleges that our other kids went to. I highly doubt that this shooting had anything to with college... other than it happened there. Probably some mentally deranged weirdo... like most other shooters.

Oddly, the daughter that went to that college is the lesbian one. Go figure.

Well, it's perfectly true that he was "a guy" and it was in "her class" - she just got shot in the fucking arm so I wouldn't blame her for shouting something factually accurate but potentially misleading.

edit: Plus, I wouldn't blame her for not immediately recognizing that the dude shooting her and all her classmates up is in fact a face she's never seen in class before, if in fact he wasn't a student enrolled in that class. I wouldn't stand there staring at his face - I'd be fucking running for my life.

Police identified the suspect as One L. Goh, 43, a Korean national believed to be a resident of Oakland, though Goh surrendered to police at a Safeway supermarket in Alameda, Calif., Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters.

Police planned further questioning of witnesses and the suspect, who had yet to be charged as of 6 p.m. PT, Jordan said.

Officials also were looking for Korean-speaking crisis counselors to address the needs of those touched by the shootings, Mayor Jean Quan said.

Students at Oikos University recognized the man who entered their classroom Monday morning as a former nursing student who hadn't been around for a few months.

Then he ordered everyone to get up against a wall, and he drew a handgun.

"The people started running, and he started shooting," said Gurpreet Sahota, who relayed an account from his sister-in-law, nursing student Dawinder Kaur, 19.

Seven people died, and three more were wounded in the shooting at the small Christian university, the Bay Area's worst mass killing in almost 20 years.

Police said the victims are six women and one man ranging in age from their 20s to 40s. The man was identified as Tshering Rinzing Bhutia, 38, of San Francisco, killed when the gunman stole his car outside the school Monday morning. Two of the women killed were 21-year-old student Lydia Sim and 24-year-old Kathleen Ping, authorities confirmed.

Police Chief Howard Jordan on Monday evening confirmed the arrest of 43-year-old One Goh, of Oakland, a Korean native and naturalized U.S. citizen. Not much was immediately known about One, but Jordan said he had no known previous criminal record. Officers believe he acted alone.

Following the shooting, One drove Bhutia's car about five miles from the school to an Alameda supermarket, where he announced he had shot people and should be arrested. A security guard detained him until police arrived; a shopper who witnessed a man being handcuffed said he seemed very sedate.
    [...]

Kaur, 19, a U.S. Army Reservist from Santa Clara, told relatives the gunman had been a student in her class but had been absent for months before reappearing Monday morning. Some panicked when he drew a gun and began firing; she was shot
in the arm as she helped a friend who had fallen on the classroom's floor. She then ran outside and called her brother, Paul Singh.
    [...]

About 35 people had been in or near the school at the time of the shooting, Jordan said, and the gunman apparently had fled before the first officer arrived. School officials quickly gave police the gunman's name, photo and home address, to which officers were on their way when One turned himself in at the Alameda supermarket. Bhutia's car was towed from there.
    [...]

One's brother, U.S. Army Sgt. Su Wan Ko, died in a traffic accident in Virginia in March 2011, while on special assignment from the George C. Marshall Center, an international security and defense studies institute in Garmisch, Germany. One Goh attended a memorial service in Virginia along with their father Young Nam Ko, 72, of Oakland. Their mother Oak Chul Kim, of Seoul, South Korea, attended as well but has since died, according to published reports. The suspect's other brother, Su Kwon Ko, who lives in Virginia did not answer his phone for comment Monday.

Court records show several court judgments and tax liens against One dating back to 2006, when he lived in Virginia. He owed more than $23,000 in federal taxes at one point and thousands of dollars more to banks and apartment owners.

The most recent judgment, in December, was for $985 to Capital One Bank.

My thoughts were whether or not he was targeting that particular class.

"We've learned that the suspect was upset with the administration at the school. He was also upset that students in the past, when he attended the school, mistreated him, disrespected him, and things of that nature," Jordan said Tuesday on "Good Morning America." ''He was having, we believe, some behavioral problems at the school and was asked to leave several months ago.

One Goh, the 43-year-old Korean-American man suspected in the execution-style shooting deaths at a small Christian college in California, seemed a doting son visiting his parents in senior housing. But at the same time, he was capable of displaying unbridled anger at the school, according to police and others who had contact with him. The portrait of Goh emerging one day after six women and one man were shot to death at Oikos University in Oakland is of someone who felt he was "teased" and "picked on" at the college, which eventually expelled him, possibly for poor behavior, police said.

Goh was self-conscious of his inability to speak English like a native and felt that students and others at the school made fun of him, police said.
Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said it wasn't immediately clear why Goh had been expelled from the college but, "We've been told that some of the possibilities are that he was expelled for his behavioral problems, anger management, but nothing specific."

While Goh appeared close to his family, he struggled personally with significant debt, including a tax lien by the Internal Revenue Service, according to court records. His brother, a soldier, reportedly was killed last year in the line of duty. CNN affiliate KGO said the brother, a staff sergeant in the Army, died in a car accident while training with the Special Forces.

Authorities said Tuesday that One admitted his involvement in the shooting and told investigators that one female administrator in particular at Oikos University was the object of his fury, mainly because she would not help him get back $6,000 in tuition.

The 43-year-old suspect told police he wanted to get back at the school and to inflict pain, Police Chief Howard Jordan said. There are conflicting reports about whether he was expelled, but the suspect left the school in November and told investigators he wasn't satisfied with the class he was taking. He was also upset with some classmates because he felt he was being teased -- particularly about his English skills -- and treated differently by them. People stopped talking to him and wouldn't even acknowledge him at times, he told investigators.
Police believe the suspect reloaded a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol at least once during the rampage, and only stopped shooting and fled because he heard people calling 911. "We don't believe the suspect intended to have a confrontation with the police, so he left after he finished shooting," Jordan said.
Police say the suspect legally purchased a gun six weeks ago in Castro Valley and they believe it was used in the shooting, but haven't yet recovered the weapon. On Tuesday morning, police combed an area near the Oakland Estuary off Doolittle Drive searching for the gun. Their search site was decided upon in part because it was along One's purported escape route to Alameda, and because of the discovery of fresh footprints along the shoreline.

And now for some good news...

Are mass killings on the increase? Criminologist says no

(CNN) -- Oakland is reeling after a gun rampage at a small religious college left seven people dead. Six months ago, eight people died in a shooting in Seal Beach, California. And just over a year ago, an attack targeting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona left six dead and 13 injured.

Each mass killing provokes a flurry of public shock and a frenzy of media attention -- and often soul-searching about whether they represent a broader descent into gun-fueled violence.

But are such attacks on the rise in the United States?

Not according to professor James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University in Boston who has been studying mass murder for the past three decades.

Despite the huge media coverage devoted to them, crime statistics show that there is no upward trend in mass killings -- defined as having four victims or more, not counting terrorism -- since the 1970s, he said.
"Overall in this country, there is an average of 10 to 20 murders across campuses in any given year," he said. "Compare that to over 1,000 suicides and about 1,500 deaths from binge drinking and drug overdoses."

So while they are sad when they occur, school shootings are "very few and far between, and very unpredictable," Fox said. This suggests that authorities can do greater good by focusing on the prevention of suicide and substance abuse than trying to guard against a campus killer.

An unusual portrait emerged of Goh, with his nursing instructor saying that he was consumed by an inability to get along with women before he left the school a few months ago. The teacher, Romie Delariman of San Leandro, said Goh didn't fit in at a college where women make up the vast majority of the nursing faculty and student body.

Delariman said Goh - a former construction worker with a string of debts but no criminal record that would keep him from buying a gun - was a good and eager student. But he added, "He just can't deal with women. ... I always advised him, 'You go to school to learn, not to make friends.' "

The instructor said Goh was also "mentally unstable" and paranoid. He sometimes spoke of violence, saying he had picked fights with people on the street and had carried a gun with him for protection, Delariman said.

Goh, who could be charged by prosecutors as soon as Wednesday, is largely cooperating with city investigators, said Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan at a news conference outside the school. Goh is offering details of his killing plan, Jordan said, but little remorse for having carried it out.
    [...]

Jordan revealed that Goh's prime target is still alive. He went to the school in search of a female administrator whom he felt had wronged him, the chief said, but opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol even after being told she wasn't there.

Goh took another female school employee hostage, police said, walking her to a classroom and ordering students there to line up in a row against a chalkboard. They were shot as they begged for their lives, and before they could finish lining up.

Goh then briefly went outside before returning to the school, police said. That's when he "went through the entire building, systematically and randomly shooting the victims," Jordan said.
    [...]

Jordan said Goh had been expelled from the university several months ago, possibly for "behavioral problems" or for not being able to control his anger.

"We do know he was upset at several students due to how he was treated at the school," Jordan said.

Delariman said it was his understanding that Goh had quit the school. He disputed accounts that Goh had been picked on due to his imperfect English.

"He can't get along with people," Delariman said. "If you say, 'How are you?' he'll say, 'Why? Don't I look OK? Did I do something to you?' "

The murder case against One Goh, a Korean national accused of killing seven people during a rampage at a private Oakland university earlier this year, was suspended Monday as a defense attorney asked for a mental evaluation of his client.

Assistant public defender David Klaus told a superior court judge that his client is refusing to speak to him and that a mental evaluation is necessary to determine if Goh, 43, is fit to stand trial.

Under California law, Klaus' request immediately placed the case on hold as the court directs two psychologists to evaluate Goh to determine if he understands the charges filed against him and if he can properly assist Klaus in his defense.

Klaus' request, however, appeared to agitate Goh, who yelled something to the judge after Klaus said he wanted to determine if Goh was mentally fit to stand trial. Goh's statement to the court could not be heard but afterward he looked at his attorney and shook his head left to right.
    [...]

After his arrest, Goh went on a hunger strike at Santa Rita Jail, telling authorities that he was refusing to eat because he was ashamed of what he did, the sheriff's department has said.

Since that hunger strike, Goh looked thinner than he was in his booking photo taken the day of the shooting, and on Monday he looked thinner still.

OAKLAND, California A judge ruled on Monday that a man accused of killing seven people at a small Northern California Christian college is not mentally fit for trial.

A public defender representing defendant One Goh said a psychiatrist has determined that Goh suffers from paranoid schizophrenia that dates back several years.

Alameda County Assistant Public Defender David Klaus has said the condition causes Goh to distrust people, including those trying to help him.

Klaus has said he and his co-counsel have had trouble talking with Goh because of his mental state.

A judge ordered Goh to return to court Jan. 28.
