FALFURRIAS (Kiii News) -
There is new information about that brutal domestic violence incident in Falfurrias. The victim, Erika Cantu DeLeon, 34, died late Wednesday night after a horrific beating allegedly at the hands of her estranged husband.
Eusebio 'Chevo' DeLeon, 39, spent all day and night driving to Ann Arbor, Michigan and ended up at a hospital there and asked for medication.
Police say he was acting suspiciously and caused authorities to Google his name. What they found was our news story that we published on our or web site Thursday.
Because of our report, DeLeon was arrested and charged with the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Police say he was driving his wife's SUV.
Falfurrias police say DeLeon is the main suspect in his wife's murder and working on murder warrant against him. Police think DeLeon used a dumb bell to bash her head. An ironing chord was found wrapped around her neck. She was taken by Halo Flight to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital where she died around 11:21 PM Thursday night.
News of Erika's death was the talk of the town in Falfurrias where the community mourned the loss and tried to raise awareness about domestic violence. Ribbons and posters adorned the town marking Erika's death.
Family and friends were upset and angry, saying Erika was taken from them too soon.
"No one deserves to be taken away that way, you know. It wasn't time for her to go and for him to do something like this, to such a great person is wrong. So everybody needs to be aware that this happens, this happens, so if you have a family member and you know they're going through this, and they've had a history of abuse, help them," says Deanna Mendoza, Erika's Cousin.
