Mom, Daughter Who Trained Dogs To Kill Pig Get Two Months In Jail

A mother and daughter were charged with animal cruelty after they recorded two dogs attacking and killing a pig in their backyard and posted the video on Facebook, Sheriff Deryl Loar said Thursday.

"Get him! Bite him!" shouted Janice Kay Ramirez, 55, as she recorded the five-minute attack by the cur mix dogs, according to the clip released by the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.

She and Ashley Ann Ramirez, 21, both of the 2300 block of 84th Court, Vero Beach, were investigated after someone anonymously sent a copy of the video to authorities in March, Loar said. Deputies had to subpoena Facebook to get the address for the home in the video. Ashley Ramirez was on the video coaxing the dogs to attack.

"It's one of the worst animal cruelty cases we've seen," Loar said about the attack on the pig, which managed to squeal throughout the ordeal despite its snout being closed with duct tape.

The women were charged with cruelty to animals and baiting animals Wednesday. They posted $10,000 bail each Thursday.

The video was posted on Ashley Ramirez's private Facebook page on March 3.

"You can see the dogs were hesitant at first," said Ilka Daniel, director of animal protection services for the Humane Society of Indian River and Vero Beach. "They were encouraged by their owners to attack. This is not the type of behavior these dogs normally do."

"You can tell they were enjoying this," Daniel said. "This was bloodsport. It's scary to see someone who has a lack of empathy for someone in suffering."

On Facebook, 40 comments were posted on the video, Deputy Luke Keppel said.

"Some of the comments were negative," Keppel said. "Some people agreed with what the women were doing."

Ashley Ramirez said the duct tape on the pig's mouth was to protect her dogs and to prevent the squealing from attracting the notice of neighbors, according to her warrant affidavit. The women told the Sheriff's Office they bought the pig at a local farm, Keppel said. The women do not live in an area where livestock is permitted.

"Their justification was they were going to kill the pig anyway," Detective Sgt. Nancy McNally said. "You can't justify this."

Pigs can be nasty when they want to be, but not whn their snouts are tped shut. they have that new show "wild hogs" where they use dogs to hunt down wild pigs in order to try to lower the feral pig population. But they are trained to find and hold the pig. then the hunters hog tie the animals and donate the meat to the locals.

Well, as someone who's been present at boucheries, I can tell you that you don't want to eat a pig that's been killed by a dog or anything else. The pig is slaughtered and immediately gutted or dressed. The contents of the stomach and intestines empty and will foul the meat. Not to gross you out, but the hide has to be removed, then you can cut it up. I sure hope some of the cops are hunters or country boys.

You know, when you kill an animal for food, even if you don't think about it consciously, you respect the animal that you killed so your family can have meat. I've never killed anything for fun or sport, and we ate every dove, rabbit, squirrel or deer.

VERO BEACH — A mother and daughter who used their dogs to kill a farm-raised pig in their backyard in 2011 are being punished with two months in county jail and they have to serve 30 months of probation, Circuit Judge Robert Pegg ruled on Monday.

Janice and Ashley Ramirez, 21, also must each pay $1,000 to the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County.

Pegg withheld ruling the two women guilty of charges of torturing the 40-pound pig and enticing their two dogs to attack it.

Neither woman commented during the sentencing that was part of a plea deal reached in January — in a case that gained social media attention and strong public reaction.

That included the women getting two anonymous letters that their attorney, Andy Metcalf, called death threats.

Metcalf said it was the women’s reflections on the killing that led to their entering no contest pleas to charges in January.

“They apologize for the method they used in training their dog,” Metcalf said. “They feel bad.”

No members of the public spoke before Pegg ruled in the case on Monday.

When asked how the two women erred legally, Metcalf said it was their setting the dogs on the pig in their enclosed backyard in a residential area in the 2300 block of 84th Court.

The public, he said, should realize there is a hunting culture in the county. People hunt and dogs are used in hunting.

After their arrest, the county took the two women’s mixed-breed dogs that were used in the attack. Investigators also found at the home 10 pit bull dogs and one Chihuahua, all of which were turned over to the mother’s ex-husband
