Snakes Bite... Even If They're Dead

There were some scary moments for a homeless man in downtown Mobile Tuesday when he was bitten by a poisonous snake.

It happened near the intersection of Marion and Jackson streets near a homeless encampment. The 41-year-old man was playing with the decapitated head of what’s believed to have been a cotton mouth snake when he was bitten.

He initial refused medical treatment, but paramedics had to be called back after the man began to show side effects from the poison.

A friend of the man described the incident.

“I saw it swimming down along the creek and everything. And, I ran down and hit it with the machete and killed it and brought it up. He picked the head up and stuck himself right in the finger with it,” the man’s friend said.

The friend said the man purposefully stuck his finger in the snake’s mouth.

“He put his finger in there and all of a sudden the nerves, I guess, and it bit down on his finger.”

The men discarded the snake by throwing it back into the creek.

As a kid growing up in rattlesnake country we were taught to not mess with dead snakes because the venom is still there-- I would also like to point out that snakes are not poisonous unless You bite it and You get sick. Snakes are VENOMOUS! It bites You and You get sick.

It's a shame we work so hard against natural selection..

I don't like snakes either, they give me nightmares, but as @Bohring says above, the snake was swimming along minding it's own business and they killed it, snakes are nasty nightmare inducing creatures but they have their place in the world, you should leave them alone as long they are not all up in your face and stuff! {{{{{shudders}}}}}

Saw a YouTube video once of what I think was a rattlesnake's head moving its eyes around. The camera gets close and BAM! It tries to bite. Everyone screams. Good times.

I love snakes, but I guess I can understand killing a venomous one if it's in a place where there are or could be children playing. However, I will say that even dangerous snakes are pretty easy to relocate. Most of them REALLY don't want to bite unless they have to, because once they bite they've blown all their venom and they're defenseless for a few hours/days.
