Sugar The Cat Survives 19-Storey Fall In Boston,Has 8 Lives Left, Only Minor Injuries

    Sugar The Cat
A very lucky cat from Boston, Massachusetts in America has survived a fall from a window 19 storeys up!

Sugar had no broken bones or cuts from the plunge, just bruising, after she fell an estimated 45-60m (150-200ft).

She was taken to vets at the Animal Rescue League, who say that when cats fall from such a height, they act like a flying squirrel - spreading their legs apart like wings.

    [...]
The owner was amazed that her cat survived and since the fall, a screen has been installed on the window that Sugar fell from.

    [...]
Brittany Kirk said her cat, Sugar, plummeted from the window of her 19th floor apartment on Storrow Drive and veterinarians with the local Animal Rescue League said the feline incurred only minor bruising to her lungs, WBZ-TV, Boston, reported Thursday.

"I'm just so thankful. When I came home from work today and I saw her, I was just very thankful. It's a miracle," Kirk said.

Brian O'Connor, a manager with the Animal Rescue League, said Sugar fell an estimated 150 to 200 feet. He said studies have shown cats have a greater chance of survival when they fall from higher than nine stories.

"The cats were able to relax, orient themselves in a flying squirrel position with the legs spread out. It slowed their descent down," O'Connor said.

Kirk said she is having screens installed on her windows to prevent future falls.

I used to keep my windows fully open, let in the breeze. Then I saw my one tubby, very clumsy cat half dangling out of it chattering at a bird. After yanking him back in, by the tail, yeah, I panicked:P those windows are never open more than a crack.

And some stupid kids will read this story and decide to test it on the family cat.

The name Sugar for a pet must be lucky. I had a beloved dog as a child by that name. She survived getting hit by a car.

In my house in San Diego I had the kind of windows that you push up and the screen is attached to the frame by a hook and eye. One of my cats (he was a kitten then) played with the hook and eye and inadvertently got it loose. Then he laid against the screen and it swung open and he fell out. He only fell a story and a half, but I freaked out when I found him outside under the window. He was fine, just scared to death.

I'm so glad Sugar isn't seriously injured.
