Something Set Off The Wheelchair Rampage Of Curtis Smith

Curtis Edward Smith, age 55 of the 3000 block of Highway 168, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and criminal mischief property damage after the incident before sunrise Monday at the Bindu Food Mart on Gulf Beach Highway. He was jailed with bond set at $6,000, but the amount was lowered to $1,100 by a judge.

Smith allegedly approached the clerk and demanded to speak to the manager, who was not in the store at the time. The clerk told deputies that Smith then began yelling and ripping his shirt, claiming he had been attacked. Smith began to chase the clerk around the store in motorized wheelchair, hitting her once on the shin, and threw potato chip racks at her and around the store, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
    [...]

When deputies arrived, Smith was still inside the store, yelling, “Call the [obscenity] police and take me to jail”, the arrest report states. As the deputy tried to calm Smith, he attempted to roll toward the deputy, demanding that the officer purchase him a drink and some food. The deputy ordered Smith to turn off the wheelchair, but he began to roll around the store.

According to the arrest report, after telling him to leave because she was calling 911, Smith chased the clerk throughout the store, throwing merchandise racks at her, yelling, "Go ahead, call the police!"

But deputies say he wasn't done.

Smith rammed the wheelchair into the store's glass door, shattering it to pieces.

A second employee also told deputies Smith attacked him, ramming his ankle a couple times and yelling racist comments.

I fucking hate assholes (with motorized wheelchairs.) We had this one customer who was a complete fucking moron, whom everyone hated, that, unsurprisingly, we found out through (unsolicited by us) conversations with him that he'd been involved in a car accident he caused himself, which led to his paralysis. IIRC he had found employment with our local transit authority as some sort of handicapped accessibility compliance officer or something. I'd occasionally see him around town carelessly speeding down densely trafficked sidewalks in commercial areas, making no effort to go around pedestrians or slow for them, forcing people to dodge out of his way. It seemed only a matter of time before he caused another accident, one without automobiles involved. Last I heard he'd gotten a job with Disney (doing the same sort of compliance work) and moved to Florida. Good riddance.

Is it wrong that this story made me laugh out loud? I could just see this asshole rolling around in his motorized wheelchair terrorizing these poor employees at the store. Man the icing on this would have been if the cop had tased his crippled ass.
Razors pain you, rivers are damp, acid stains you, drugs cause cramps, gun aren't lawful, nooses give, gas smells awful, you might as well live.

No, no, no. The icing would have been if he had damaged his chair ramming something and his own chair had inadvertently tased him. But you know, they probably spend a lot of money designing them to specifically avoid doing things that like, since they probably have to assume half the people buying their product are morons likely to ram things by accident or intent.

maybe his battery was dead and he couldn't get to court?
The Century man that allegedly went on a wheelchair rampage in a convenience store last month is back behind bars.

Curtis Edward Smith, age 55 of the 3000 block of Highway 168, was due to appear in court Thursday on two counts of aggravated battery and criminal mischief property damage. But according to court records, he was a no show before Judge Jan Shackelford.

A failure to appear warrant was issued for his arrest Friday, and he was booked into the Escambia County Jail early Saturday morning with bond set at $1,100. He is awaiting another hearing on April 20.
