OREM – Police say a son killed his own father on Father’s Day. The man’s wife screamed for help as her son hacked his father with a meat cleaver.
Michael Kirsch, 31, is in custody on suspicion of stabbing his 62-year-old father, Christopher Kirsch on Father’s Day, June 15, 2008.
Police say the father and son got into an argument at Christopher Kirsch’s Orem home. At one point in the argument, authorities say Michael Kirsch grabbed a meat cleaver and began stabbing his father in the chest and back with the 10-inch knife.
Neighbors heard screams coming from the home they viewed as, “the most normal family on the block.”
Paramedics say the father died moments after he was driven to Timpanogos Hospital.
Coburn said the father and son appeared to be close and were often seen outside doing yard work together.
Police believe mental illness could be involved in the murder case.
“It has a lot to do with what we now know as a history of psychological problems with the son,” said Lt Doug Edwards.
Edwards said the son has a criminal history that includes a 2004 conviction for aggravated assault with a knife.
The Kirsch family invited Michael to live at home in hopes to help him recover from his mental illness.
