A woman accused of severely injuring her 5-year-old son by slashing his throat told investigators she was releasing demons from his body, police said Saturday.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Magnolia police went to the house early Saturday after the boy's father returned home and found the little boy covered in blood, authorities said. The child's throat was slashed from one side to the other and he had a severe head injury, authorities said.

Spurlock told investigators she was reading the Bible with her son and realized he was possessed with demons, so she stomped on his chest and face and then cut him with a large kitchen knife while trying to release the demons from his body, police said.

David Spurlock, 59, also was questioned by Magnolia police, but said he was not involved in the incident at the house, about 45 miles northwest of Houston.

"I can't put it together yet," Spurlock told the newspaper by phone from Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, where his son was listed in critical condition Saturday.

Gwen Carter, a Child Protective Services spokeswoman, said the department is investigating the alleged abuse of a child. The agency has not had previous contact with the family, she said.

A Magnolia woman accused of cutting her 5-year-old son’s throat was hearing voices she believed were from Jesus, her husband said.

“She thought the voices were Jesus,” said her husband, David Spurlock. “She started cussing a week ago. That was not like her at all.”

A born-again Christian, Daphne Spurlock would never have harmed her son on her own, her husband said.

Spurlock, 59, said he wasn’t at home when his wife allegedly harmed their only child sometime around midnight Saturday.

“I wish I would have been there and it wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

"I don't see how it happened. I couldn't see my mother doing it at all," said Channtera Gresham, Spurlock's 25-year-old daughter.

Gresham said she is convinced police have the wrong person in custody.

"My mama is a loving person. She never hit us out of anger. She never would do that," she said.

Beverly Latham heard that her sister claimed she was trying to rid her son of demons, but Latham said that's uncharacteristic of her sister.

"I know my sister would never hurt her children," Latham said. "Never."

Even a family friend -- Mary Smith, who raised her children alongside Spurlock's -- says police have the wrong person.

Smith said authorities need to investigate what happened between Spurlock and her husband, David, before Michael was found in that near-death state.

If she did in fact make the statements DV posted above then her friends and her daughter are in denial. I mean if the mother herself has more or less confessed (stating she realized he was possessed and then detailing the assult) then she is guilty. I guess it's hard for some people to accept the truth.
