TROY - Police say 56-year-old Thomas McMartin accidentally took a picture of himself in the process of installing a hidden camera in the women's locker room at RPI. That's how they were able to identify him and charge him with the crime.

Police say McMartin answered those charges Friday morning in Troy City Court. Police say he admitted to the crime and he's cooperating. But the investigation continues.

McMartin of Hoosick Falls, faced a judge in Troy City Court, pleaded not guilty to unlawful surveillance and burglary.

Police say the 56-year-old mounted a motion detection camera in the ceiling of the RPI women's swim team locker room.

One of the alleged victims noticed something strange on the ceiling on March 8 and alerted RPI authorities. After a full internal investigation, Troy police detectives took over the case. They say McMartin was caught red handed with the evidence implicating him in the crime right inside the camera.

“The camera took a picture of the defendant in the process of mounting the camera,” said Captain John Cooney of the Troy Police Department.

McMartin worked at RPI in maintenance. Authorities say he was not even allowed in the locker room even as an employee. He has since been fired.

For those who often use the facility, words could not describe how they feel.

“You can't be mentally right to do something like this. It's very sad,” said Teresa Swider, a Grafton resident.

Even more disturbing for them, is that same facility is often used for local youth swim meets where underage swimmers would be in the locker room preparing for their events.

But police say so far, they've identified three to four adult victims and as of right now, they don't believe children were pictured.

“Our investigation at this point limits the defendant's activities to March 8 in the evening hours,” said Cooney.

“We come to swim meet all the time. It's a little uncomfortable to know it even happened once,” said Swider.

Police say they're not 100 percent sure this was the first time McMartin has done this. That's why they will continue to investigate.

This has happened so often in video peeper cases that you would think the asshats would know better. Even without it being reported on, common sense should tell them to stay out of range of the thing that takes pictures.

There's been so many of these cases and cameras keep getting smaller and smaller.

Does anyone else find themselves wondering about weird holes or vents in public restrooms?

I know for a fact the casinos in Vegas have them in the bathrooms. A long time ago I was in a stall splitting a small package of something highly illegal. 2 minutes later a security guy came in and rapped on my stall door and said leave the casino when you exit the restroom. So I did. I had done nothing else wrong and we had just walked in. They had to have surveillance looking in the stall. This was at the Hacienda which was demo'd New Years eve in 97.

yes, I too, have seen vidieos of people planting the camera and adjusting the angle. One moron had it in a shoebox next to the toilet. Who's not going to look in that?

Troy, NY - Police say that Thomas McMartin, 56, made their job a bit easier after he photographed himself while installing a hidden camera in a women’s locker room at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. On March 8, a woman reportedly noticed something strange on the ceiling of the RPI women’s swim team locker room. She contacted RPI authorities. According to court documents, Troy police detectives investigating the case found the hidden camera to contain – before a collection of photos of victims – a photograph of McMartin placing the camera in its hidden location. “The camera took a picture of the defendant in the process of mounting the camera,” said Captain John Cooney of the Troy Police Department. As McMartin worked at RPI in maintenance, he wasn’t hard to find. RPI said that McMartin’s duties would not have placed him in the locker room for any reason. RPI has since fired McMartin. Police said that it was unclear how long the camera had been set up. Cooney said that police are in the process of notifying the “umpteen” women that are on the recordings. So far, they have reportedly identified three to four adult victims. They do not believe that any of the children who also use the facility were photographed. More charges may be filed if investigators determine that this is not McMartin’s first time. McMartin pleaded not guilty to unlawful surveillance and burglary in Troy City Court.
