A Delaware County mother is behind bars after her stepson was stabbed.

The 28-year-old mother told NBC 10's Lu Ann Cahn that she was trying to protect her 7-year-old daughter and unborn child.

Police said the mother, whose name and address NBC 10 is not releasing to protect the identities of her children, called 911 from her Collingdale home Sunday night, saying that she caught her 13-year-old stepson sexually assaulting her 7-year-old daughter.

Police said she called 911 a second time to report that she was in a physical fight with her stepson.

"At some point, they appeared in the kitchen and there was a knife on the counter. They both went for the knife. The boy grabbed the blade section. The mother grabbed the handle section, and struggle ensued and then at some point, he lost his grip, because he had cuts on his hand, and at that point he lost his grip, the knife went into his chest," said Sgt. Bob Adams with the Collingdale Police Department.

The mother, who is pregnant, was arrested and charged with simple assault, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing an instrument of crime.

"The courts will have to decide if what she did was right or wrong," Adams said.

The boy has been released from the hospital and is being questioned about the alleged assault on the girl. The girl has been examined and she is said to be traumatized, but OK.

The mother is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

I don't think she should be in jail.
