A 27-year-old mother who was found running through the streets naked, covered with blood near Vegas Drive and Jones Boulevard, used scissors to stab and kill her 6-year-old daughter Sunday in their northwest valley home, Metro Police say.

Danielle Slaughter, 27, Las Vegas, was arrested Sunday on one count of murder in connection with the death of Kyla Franks, according to police and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Police said they were called around 8:55 p.m. to a home on the 1600 block of Palmae Way and found the girl deceased in the master bedroom.

The girl was stabbed multiple times between 4:30 p.m and 6 p.m., Steiber said, adding the scissors were recovered from the home.

No one else was home at the time. The homeowner, who lives there with his own daughter, found Franks’ body and called police.

“The mother was nowhere to be found upon the child being discovered,” Steiber said.

Slaughter fled on foot and was found about two miles away in the area of Vegas Drive and Jones Boulevard, police said.

Police, unaware of the death of the 6-year-old, transported the naked woman to Valley Hospital, Steiber said.

“The mother had some sort of mental breakdown,” Steiber said. “It was treacherous as for how this child was killed.”

Steiber said police can make a strong case that the mother was behind the gruesome slaying of the girl.

"We're confident that we do have the right person," he said, noting that child homicides are particularly difficult for both detectives and the public to handle.

"There were no apparent issues that were going on," Steiber said. "Everybody appeared to be happy and jovial."

Steiber said Slaughter did not have a criminal record. There also was no record of involvement with the county's Department of Family Services.

Christine Skorupski, a spokeswoman for the Department of Family Services, confirmed that Slaughter had no prior history with the agency, which has begun its own investigation into Kyla's death.

Steiber said police have no idea why Slaughter was running through the streets naked and possibly spattered in her daughter's blood.

"There is no reason why she was there," Steiber said. "She somehow, some way, just ended up there."

Steiber added that police do not think Slaughter was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she was detained before being hospitalized.

According to the report, Danielle Slaughter kept her daughter home from daycare that day because she had been feeling an evil presence and wanted to be with her daughter.

The report says that Slaughter and her daughter were in a bedroom and Slaughter was holding her daughter when the child began kicking and scratching her mother.

Slaughter says that her daughter was "laughing in an evil voice" and that she picked up scissors that were lying on a desk and "struck" her daughter multiple times.

Slaughter also told detectives that she could not believe that she killed Kyla and that it was not "like" her.

LVMPD received a call at about 6:05 p.m. March 11 that a black female was running on Vegas Drive near Jones Boulevard.

The woman was described as being barefoot with blood on her hands and screaming. Other callers reported that the woman was taking off her clothes as she ran.

She was taken into custody at Vegas Drive and Decatur Boulevard, completely naked. She told officers that the blood was from the "Lamb of God." The responding officer did not see any injuries but she was taken to Valley Hospital by the city fire department.

At about 8:55 p.m., LVMPD received a phone call from a man at a house in the 1600 block of Palmae Way. He stated that there was a minor child who was not breathing.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel verified that the child was deceased and discovered that the child had sustained injuries on her neck, possibly from a sharp instrument and that there was a pair of scissors near the body.

The man in the home, who was identified as Ashton Lyken, told detectives that he had received a call at work from his live-in girlfriend, Danielle Slaughter, that her daughter was dead. Lyken told police that when he arrived home, she was not there.

Slaughter also told detectives that she had been taking a dietary aid, Hydroxycut, for four days and had not been sleeping well since she began taking the aid.

Slaughter also said that she had been feeling an evil presence for several days except on Saturday, the day before she allegedly killed her daughter, because she went to church that day.

Slaughter also stated she had never felt that way before.

A woman accused of stabbing and killing her 6-year-old daughter — saying she had sensed an “evil presence” in the girl — refused to leave her jail cell Wednesday morning to make her first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court.

Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure, who expressed his dismay that she wasn’t brought to court, rescheduled the arraignment on murder charges for Danielle Slaughter, 27, and ordered a Clark County Detention Center official to make sure she would be at the next hearing. He set that for 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Andrea Luem, a member of the public defender’s homicide team, said outside the hearing that she had been able to talk to Slaughter, but had been able to have no meaningful discussion with her about the case.

Bonaventure asked a corrections officer in charge of bringing those in custody to the court why Slaughter wasn’t brought to the hearing.

“Does she pose some kind of threat? I’d like to know the reason she wasn’t transported to the court,” the judge said. “Let me hear from the corrections officer. Does she pose some kind of threat to the corrections officers or to herself or to other inmates?”

One of the corrections officers in the room with the others in custody told the judge over the video that when he went to pick up Slaughter, “she refused to get out of her bunk. Right now, she’s in isolation housing. And, therefore, due to her refusal, we would have to get a court order to go in and get her.”

Luem told the judge that Slaughter was in isolation “on suicide watch.” Luem asked the judge to pass over the matter for about two days. She said there were questions about her competency.

Luem said it appeared that Slaughter didn’t understand the charges filed against her.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Pam Weckerly said she had no opposition against waiting for two days.

“I was inclined to order that she be transported to court today,” Bonaventure said. “But the defense attorney has expressed some concerns. I am however, ordering that she be brought to court by the next court date. Is that clear?”

Bonaventure said Slaughter will continue to be held without bail.

A mother accused of killing her 6-year-old daughter with scissors told a Las Vegas judge on Friday that she understands the murder charge against her.

Danielle Yvonne Slaughter appeared confused, however, about whether a mandatory evidence hearing should be held quickly or delayed so she could undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Against the advice of her public defender, Slaughter chose the two-week minimum, and Justice of the Peace Joe M. Bonaventure scheduled the preliminary hearing for March 29.

Slaughter's defense lawyer, Andrea Luem, said Friday that she advised Slaughter to ask the judge to delay the preliminary hearing to April 23 to allow time for an initial psychological evaluation.

Luem has said she's concerned about her client's mental condition and fitness to face charges in the death of Kyla Franks. Luem has not said whether she will seek an insanity defense.

Danielle Yvonne Slaughter Insanity: Mom Who Allegedly Killed Daughter With Scissors To Plead Not Guilty

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas mother pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday to killing her 6-year-old daughter with scissors after thinking she heard the girl speak and laugh in what she later told police was an "evil voice."

Danielle Yvonne Slaughter spoke clearly while answering a judge's questions and entering her plea during a brief arraignment in Clark County District Court. Judge Melisa De La Garza scheduled Slaughter to appear at a May 16 before the trial judge.

Slaughter, 27, remained jailed without bail. She faces a murder charge that could put her in prison for the rest of her life.

Her lawyer, deputy Clark County Public Defender Andrea Luem, said she isn't contesting Slaughter's competency for trial. Instead, Slaughter is claiming temporary insanity.

Prosecutor Pam Weckerly declined to comment outside court.

Slaughter was found naked, barefoot and bloody March 11 near her home in northwest Las Vegas shortly before her live-in boyfriend summoned police. They found Slaughter's daughter, Kyla Franks, dead in a bedroom and a pair of scissors nearby.

A frenzied Slaughter told police who took her to a hospital that the blood on her hands was from the "lamb of God."

"Did I kill my daughter? Is she dead?" Slaughter later asked homicide detectives.

In a recorded interview, Slaughter told investigators she had been having trouble sleeping since she started taking a caffeinated, over-the-counter weight-loss product four days before the slaying. She said she slept just one hour the night before.

Luem said Thursday it was too early to tell if lack of sleep and taking the dietary supplement had any effect on the slaying.

Slaughter told police she kept her daughter home from daycare the day of the slaying because she felt an "evil presence" in the house.

She said the two were sitting on the bed when the girl spoke in "evil words," laughed "in an evil voice" and clawed and kicked at her, police said in an arrest report. Slaughter told police she picked up the scissors and struck the child several times.

"One of the first things that Danielle told the detectives was that she could not believe she had killed her daughter," the police report said.
