On August 28, 2009 RCMP began a search of a property near Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, for the remains of Nicole Hoar, a 25 year old missing since 2002. Nicole disappeared while hitchhiking along Highway 16 in mid BC on my own 25th birthday, June 21, 2002.

A tragedy on its own to say the least; her disappearance is just the tip of the iceberg, unique to this area only in the fact that Nicole wasn't aboriginal. In October of 2007, RCMP increased the number of women missing or murdered along the infamous Highway of Tears from 9 to 18, with many people believing there have been more related murders and disappearances than that. The vast majority of the victims have been aboriginal and authorities have come under fire from locals and family members claiming that the cases were not given as much attention due to the race of the victims. I can't say as I don't suspect the same thing.

The first case officially related is the murder of Gloria Moody in 1969, and the most recent being the murder of Aielah Saric-Auger, 14 years old, in February, 2006. 37 years of murder, if indeed the same person killed Gloria, Nicole and Aielah, the killer started at least 8 years before Nicole existed and continued at least 4 years after her assumed murder.

The property currently being searched belonged to a Leland Switzer at the time of Nicole's disappearance. RCMP will not confirm that he is connected, but many locals have long suspected Switzer and are only surprised it has taken this long. Switzer is currently serving a life term for the murder of his own brother, and is well-known locally as an unstable "tough guy."

Where does one get a ninja kit? What constitutes a proper ninja kit? Stashing one in the trunk of my car may be handy in case I ever get stranded in the wilds of buttfuck North Dakota.

My mind is torn between calling you Baron Von Richtofen and thinking of Snoopy flying a doghouse and shooting at you. And singing, "Rah rah Richtofen, Russia's greatest love machine!" Even though the second makes less sense and I dislike that song. Actually I lie, it's not torn at all, it just does both.

Parents of young women who were either slain or went missing along the remote highway from Prince George to Prince Rupert shed a lot of tears during a day-long meeting with police on the status of the investigation, participants said.

Family members heard about no pending arrests or cases that were about to be solved, said Matilda Wilson, whose 16-year-old daughter was killed 15 years ago. But they walked out of the session feeling that investigators are working on the cases, she said.

“It was pretty intense,” Ms. Wilson said in an interview. “It does not matter how many years since they [the young women] disappeared. Some family members could barely talk about their loved ones. They did a lot of crying. Investigators finally know how we really feel.”

The RCMP have been repeatedly criticized for not responding to reports of missing women, most from native reserves, along Highway 16 from Prince George to Prince Rupert.

Ms. Wilson, a member of the Gitxsan First Nation, said police waited two weeks before beginning a search for her daughter Ramona after she disappeared in June of 1994. “They did not take it seriously,” she said. Her body was discovered 10 months later adjacent to a muddy road about a kilometre from the Smithers airport, midway between Prince George and Prince Rupert.

An RCMP investigation dubbed Project E-PANA is looking into the disappearance or homicide of 18 young women since 1969, many along a stretch of road dubbed the highway of tears. RCMP spokeswoman Corporal Annie Linteau, who was at the meeting on Saturday with the families, said investigators have completed a review of incidents since 1969 and are now following up leads in the cases.

And women are still disappearing. Many other sets of remains are still being discovered too. Not all being linked to The Highway of Tears.

1969 ... a very long time ago; I was a newborn. I am of the belief that this is the work of more than one individual given the decades this has been ongoing.

Mounties have linked a now-dead kidnapper and sex offender from the U.S. to at least three murders, dating back nearly 40 years, in a stretch along B.C.'s so-called Highway of Tears.

Police believe violent offender Bobby Jack Fowler was working “odd jobs” in the Prince George area during the early ’70s, around the same time 19-year-olds Gale Weys and Pamela Darlington and 16-year-old Colleen MacMillen were murdered.

Eighteen young women vanished or were killed along Highways 5, 16, and 97 in B.C. from 1969 to 2006. Mounties are still checking their evidence, but have ruled out Fowler as a suspect in eight of the cases.

Currently, police are chasing another two suspects.

“It’s always struck me how many men are capable of this,” said a solemn RCMP Staff Sgt. Wayne Clary on Tuesday.

“We’re confident a single killer is not responsible for all cases,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Wayne Clary, adding that in the decades-long investigation covered 700 boxes of police files, 750 DNA profiles, 1,400 persons of interest, 2,500 interviews and 18,000 investigative enquiries.

DNA submitted to Interpol this year linked evidence found on MacMillen to authorities in Oregon.

Fowler, a 66-year-old former roofer and a drug user who, police say, believed hitchhiking women desired to be violently assaulted, didn’t have a Canadian criminal record, so previous searches within the country found nothing.

Fowler died in an Oregon prison in 2006 of lung cancer while serving a 16-year sentence for kidnapping, assault and attempted rape. He is additionally a “person of interest” or suspect in at least seven U.S. homicides, two of them double murders.

“We are comforted by the fact that he was in prison when he died, and that he can’t ever hurt anyone else,” MacMillen said.

Family members of Fowler interviewed by police in the U.S. have accused him of killing a relative, although a body has not been found.

I know the families would rather he be alive so they could have their court time but at least hes dead and not on the run still killing
cant wait for more DNA to come out they think hes responsable for at least 20 more between states and canada
