Travis Alexander was a young, successful businessman, a well-known motivational speaker and a devout Mormon. Alexander wanted to get married some day and have a family.
The 30-year-old Mesa man who had recently finished a self-help book to inspire others didn't get the chance.
On Monday, friends who hadn't heard from him in days discovered his body in his 4,500-square-foot home near Elliot and Meridian roads. He had trauma to his body and police are investigating it as a homicide.
"Everyone loved Travis," said Samantha Alexander, his sister who is a Carlsbad, Calif., police officer. "His life was about helping other people and making the world a better place. He was a great person and very religious. This doesn't usually happen to people like him."
Alexander, who didn't have a college degree, worked hard to secure a successful life.
He owned a company and became a top seller of legal insurance for Prepaid Legal Services Inc. and frequently traveled giving motivational speeches for the company.
Several years ago, he moved to Mesa for business opportunities and to build a life in a strong Mormon community. It was a change from how he grew up.
Alexander was raised in Riverside, Calif., with three brothers and four sisters. It was a tough childhood with two parents, now deceased, who were drug addicts. As a teenager, he became active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his faith guided his life, another sister, Hillary Wilcox, said.
After graduating from high school, he served a two-year mission in Denver.
"He was a really good example of how you are supposed to live," Wilcox said.
Travis didn't smoke or drink alcohol or caffeine. He kept fit with yoga, ate nutritious foods and wore a calorie counter to stay on track.
Recently, he had become concerned about the environment and began recycling, bought cloth grocery bags to give friends, and traded his BMW for a Toyota Prius hybrid.
One of his proudest accomplishments was a spiritual motivational book he had recently finished that addressed, in part, how he overcame his struggles in life, titled Raising You. His friends plan to publish the book.
