Teenage son in custody after mom shot to death

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The Wayne County Medical Examiner confirms the shooting death of a 36-year-old woman in Detroit. Her 14-year-old son is in custody.

The victim, Tamiko Robinson was shot multiple times. Robinson was found on the floor of a home located on the 5700 block of Burns near Gratiot with a shotgun wound.

Police say Robinson was shot and killed while sleeping on the living room couch. Investigators say the teen broke into a locked gun cabinet, loaded the shotgun and then shot his mother.

Reports indicate Robinson's boyfriend called police after hearing a verbal altercation on the first floor.

The 14-year-old suspect and victim's son, ran from the scene but was later arrested by police.

The victim, Tamiko Robinson, was shot multiple times inside her home in the 5700 block of Burns, and the woman's brother said he had no doubt she was killed by her 14-year-old son. "He brutally murdered her. It was overkill," Leshawn Roberts, 39, said on Monday outside his sister's home. "He shot at least 10, 12 times."

A 12-gauge shotgun was in the house for protection. Roberts said his nephew broke into a room where the gun was locked up and also grabbed a box of shotgun shells.

The boy had been feuding with his mother over issues including his friends, Roberts said. The 14-year-old would sneak out the house instead of helping his mother, who Roberts said had lupus and went to dialysis three times a week because of kidney failure.

Roberts said the youth was more interested in "smoking weed and popping pills" than helping. He said he hopes his nephew was on drugs at the time of the shooting — it would be the only explanation, he said.

She was sleeping on a couch when the shooting started after midnight. The woman's fiancee and the couple's 5-year-old daughter leapt out a window, smashing the window frame in the process to escape, he said.

Roberts said shotgun shells and blood littered the inside of the house. He said he worked to clean up the blood and that it was obvious the girl and Robinson's fiancee both had slipped in the blood during their escape.

The victim's son fled in her car. Police caught up with him at another relative's house, Roberts said

My God!! I don't know the family life here or how severe were the issues this 14 year old has. But I wouldn't be comfortable having those types of weapons in a home with a kid like this for obvious reasons. My God 10 to 12 shots with a rifle???

Holy shit.... maybe it's time for a do-over. Just wipe out the whole rat's nest and start over.
It sounds like the kid was associated with gangs and his mom just wanted to guide him to do better. What a shame. Yeah, someday, if he's not killed himself, he'll regret what he's just done. That poor woman, with all the medical issues she had, ended up murdered by her own child.

I don't know if he'll regret it one day or not. He'll probably be tried as an adult and you can bet he's in for years of incarceration. He'll be able to join that gang in prison and get all the harder and more criminalized there. If he gets out, he'll hit the streets full of anger and a desire to be Mr. Tuffer-than-you. We're looking at a major problem aborning.

A 14-year-old boy shot his mother 'at least ten times' as she slept on the couch, it has today emerged.

The teen, named by family members as Joshua Smith, from east Detroit, allegedly unleashed a hail of bullets on Tamiko Robinson, 36, in the early hours of Monday morning, according to a police spokesman.

Family members say a 14-year-old boy shot his mother to death as she was sleeping early today because he was mad she wouldn't let him hang out with friends.

Tamiko Robinson, 36, died around 3 a.m., according to her brother, Leshaun Roberts.

Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens would not release any information about the case.

"He just wanted to hang with the thugs," Roberts said, sitting on the front porch of the home on Burns, just off Gratiot Avenue, as he was holding a family picture of them. "The first thing that came to mind was he did it because of what they were going through."

Roberts said the boy, who is on the swim team and ROTC at Kettering High School, broke into an office in the home to get a gun owned by his mother's fiance.

As she slept in the living room and her fiance slept in an adjacent room with their 5-year-old daughter, Roberts said her son shot her on the couch and when she fell to the floor.

Roberts said the teen was arrested shortly after the shooting, driving his mother's car.

Roberts said Tamiko Robinson had been refusing to allow her son to have girls over at the house or spend time with a group of boys his uncle believes were affiliated with a gang.

Roberts said the teen ran away last week and was gone for four days, apparently staying with a relative. He returned home over the weekend and was upstairs sleeping prior to the shooting.

"He said his mother won't let him have friends, he said his mother won't let him bring his girlfriends over, his mother won't let him stay out until 11 o'clock at night," Roberts said. "He's 14 years old."

Roberts said he arrived after the shooting to find the living room covered with blood, and he saw bloody footprints.

Dear Lord he's just a fucking baby! I mean LOOK at him, they are gonna tear his ass apart in whatever youth facility they place him. I mean I don't know that for sure but this kid was just playing tough in my opinion and now he is going to have to pay the price. This is just so so sad. I bet now he is realizing hanging out Til 11pm and having his "girlfriend" over ain't worth what he is going thru now. I've been reading this stuff long enough to not be phased by things that people or even kids do but this has really kind of got to me.

Chilling testimony heard in case of 14-year-old accused of shooting mother

Victim's fiance says he jumped out window to escape

DETROIT -
Chilling testimony filled the courtroom Thursday from the fiancé of a Detroit woman who was allegedly shot and killed by her 14-year-old son.

Robinson's fiance, Chika Lewis, said he was sleeping in a back bedroom at about 3 a.m. when he heard several gunshots. He said he saw Smith holding a shotgun and that Robinson was "gasping for breaths."
He also testified that Smith pointed the gun at him and that he slipped when he stepped back, noticing it was from all the blood on the floor.

Lewis said he grabbed his 5-year-old daughter, broke out a kitchen window and ran for help to a neighbor's house.

Police say Smith then got into his mother's car and drove off. He was found a short time later and arrested.

Detroit Detective Johnell White read a statement from Smith in court. In it, Smith said he shot his mother because she called him fat and he wasn't going to amount to much and "he was tired of it."

“I shot her (my mother) as she was laying on the couch. She jumped up and said, 'Ouch, Ouch.' Then, I shot her again," said White, quoting Smith.

White also testified that Smith said he didn't intend to kill his mother and that he didn't shoot at Lewis because he was holding his 5-year-old sister.

Smith was bound over for trial.

His circuit court arraignment is set for March 15.

He faces life without parole.

Outside court, the teen's uncle, LeShawn Roberts, said he still considered the teen family.

Joshua Smith faces 27 to 52 years in prison for death of Tamika Robinson

A 14-year-old Detroit boy pleaded guilty Monday to shooting and killing his mom Feb. 27.

Joshua Smith pleaded guilty to second degree murder and a felony firearm charge in connection to the murder of his mother, 36-year-old Tamiko Robinson.

Robinson was sleeping on a couch at about 3 a.m. when she was shot.

Robinson’s fiancé, Chika Lewis, and her 5-year-old daughter were also in the house at the time of the shooting. Lewis said he grabbed his 5-year-old daughter, broke out a kitchen window and ran for help to a neighbor's house.

The teen was arrested by police a short time later after fleeing in his mother’s car.

Smith is expected to be sentenced to 25 to 50 years on the murder charge and a mandatory 2-year sentence for using a gun.
