11-year-old girl fights classmate outside Long Beach elementary school, dies hours later
LONG BEACH, Calif. — An 11-year-old girl is dead following an after school fight at a Long Beach elementary school, but authorities say they have no immediate plans for arrests.

Police said Saturday night that the girl died at a hospital hours after the fight with another 11-year-old girl outside the school.
Authorities say Friday’s fight didn’t appear to be especially serious or violent, no weapons were used and neither girl was knocked to the ground.

But Deputy Chief Robert Luna said at a news conference that when she returned to an afterschool program, adults noticed she wasn’t feeling well.

She was hospitalized and had emergency surgery but died about six hours after the fight.

A coroner has not yet determined a cause of death.

Girl, 11, dies in hospital hours after school fight with classmate 'over a boy'

    Joanna Ramos
An 11-year-old girl has died after she was involved in a fight outside her elementary school allegedly over a boy.

Joanna Ramos died in hospital hours after the scuffle with another girl, 11, but police said there were no plans to make any arrests.

The fight on Friday at Willard Elementary in Long Beach, California, did not appear to be especially serious or violent, according to authorities. No weapons were used and neither girl was knocked to the ground.
The fight was planned in advance, lasted less than a minute and was witnessed by around seven other students, according to Deputy Police Chief Robert Lun.
When the girl returned to an after school club following the fight, she complained of a headache to staff.
Her parents took her to hospital around 6pm where she was unconscious and not breathing on arrival.
Miss Ramos had emergency surgery but died about six hours after the fight.

The girl's friend Stephanie Soltero tearfully told ABC: 'It was over a boy, it's so stupid.'

I have never EVER in my life fought over a boy. What the hell is the point, even when I was this girls age (yeah I'm still young enough to remember what 11 was all about lol) I thought that was a dumb thing to do. Boys change their minds everytime a new set of tits pass by. I wonder what the hell happened to this girl if the fight wasn't all that serious? Brain aneurysm?

Just hit in the right spot, I guess. When I was 6 or 7 I looked under a kitchen cabinet to find a dead mouse. Its tail was caught in the trap & I remember asking how that could kill it. Never really got an answer but little shit can kill.

Sadly enough it's not just little girls who fight over boys. Some females never figure out the right thing to do is to kick the MALE in the nuts, say "fuck you asshole" and forget the guy even exists. Girls this young wouldn't know or necessarily be advised to do this. I can almost understand girls this young fighting over a boy...but to death? However it happened it is just too sad. I feel for everybody involved, especially the other girl involved in the fight. What a dark cloud to grow up under. Even if by chance it is found that the little girl actually died of an underlying medical condition it is still too much to deal with. This little girl is going to need plenty of therapy. I hope she gets it. Man, I wish I had not read this.

Post 11-Year-Old Girl Dies Hours After Fight With Classmate Over Boy

LONG BEACH, CA – An 11-year-old girl died on Friday, hours after she got into an after school fight with another girl*over a boy. Joanna Ramos and another girl had gotten into an altercation the day before, but had decided to settle their grievances in a prearranged fight to take place after school Friday, in an alley near Willard Elementary. Witnesses say the about seven people attended the meet and watched as the two girls took off their backpacks, put their hair up and then started hitting each other. A friend of Ramos said that some attempted to break up the fight, but others there would not let them. The altercation wasn’t especially serious and lasted only a minute. Police say no weapons were used and neither girl were knocked to the ground. Ramos walk away with no bruises or scratches, but did suffer a bloody nose. After returning to her after school program, Ramos complained that she was not feeling well. Her family picked her up and took her home where she complained about a headache and began vomiting. When she fell unconscious, her family rushed her to the hospital where she would die after undergoing emergency surgery. Police have identified the other girl involved in the fight with Ramos and have interviewed her, but no charges have been filed at this time.*Grief*counselors will be at the school today.

The death of a fifth grade girl who got into a fight with a classmate has been ruled a homicide, according to authorities.

Investigators say 10-year-old Joanna Ramos died Friday night from blunt force trauma to the head. They say the motive of the altercation was possibly over a boy.

Police say the fight happened after school and lasted just a minute. They said that no weapons were involved.

CORRECTION: In earlier reports we said that Joanna Ramos was 11 years old. She was 10 years old at the time of her death.

I fought all the time in school for stupid shit but never for a boy. This scared me when I first heard the report. So young, barely old enough to know how to wipe their ass and fighting over boys.

Ten-year-old Joanna Ramos died from blunt force trauma after emergency surgery for a blood clot on her brain, investigators and family members said.

As far as police can tell, the blunt force did not come from a weapon, or a wall, or a windshield, but only the fists of another young girl whom she fought hours earlier.

While the specific circumstances of Joanna's death are especially tragic and extremely unusual, medical experts said a blow in just the right spot can often prove fatal.

"This is rare, in that I've never seen it in a female, certainly not in a female adolescent," said Dr. Keith Black, a neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Black, who was not involved in Joanna's medical care, sees such injuries all the time among older patients and said a blow to the head from one young girl to another could "absolutely" be sufficient to cause enough trauma to lead to death.

Punches to the head can often lead to delayed bleeding if a vein is torn, and that can lead to a clot when blood collects on the surface of the brain,

Coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said Ramos died of blunt force trauma to the head and said her death has been ruled a homicide, but he didn't immediately have further details about her injuries.
    [...]

Joanna, who would have turned 11 on March 12, was unconscious by the time she arrived at the emergency room and underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on her brain late Friday after she began vomiting and complained of a headache, her older sister, 17-year-old Vanessa Urbina, told The Associated Press.

"After surgery the doctor said she was still alive, and then a few minutes later he comes back and tells us that her heart stopped and they couldn't bring her back," Urbina said, crying as she sat on the steps of the school near a memorial of flowers and balloons.

Police said they have made no arrests and were conducting an investigation that will be presented to prosecutors when it's completed.
    [...]

School officials believe the fight occurred near the school in a 15-minute window between the time school let out and the start of Joanna's after-school program at 2:30 p.m., said Chris Eftychiou, a spokesman for the Long Beach Unified School District.

Joanna didn't have any visible injuries or show any signs of distress for about an hour, but she eventually told staff she felt unwell and was picked up by a relative, he said.

Urbina, the older sister, said Joanna's cousin picked her up. After her mother retrieved her, Joanna vomited in the car all the way home and told her mother she felt sleepy and wanted to go to bed.

Symptoms -- such as headache, nausea, lethargy -- may not set in for hours and people can mistakenly think that they're fine, Black said.

Typically, he said, the hit to the head would have to be fairly significant to cause a blood clot and often involves the head hitting walls or the ground, but a punch is enough.

"You can certainly get enough of an impact to get enough movement in the brain by a fist to tear a vein, if it's in the right location," Black said.

Police have said the fight lasted less than a minute, did not involve weapons, and no one was knocked to the ground.

A friend of Joanna's saw her as she reported to the after-school program after the fight and said she had blood on her knuckles from wiping at a bloody nose, said Cristina Perez, the friend's mother.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office is reviewing the case of a 10-year-old girl who died following an after-school fight to determine if charges should be filed against her opponent.

District attorney spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales said Friday that Long Beach police gave their investigation into Joanna Ramos' death to prosecutors on March 13.

Prosecutors have not yet determined whether to file charges in the Feb. 24 fight.

Joanna died at a hospital about six hours after fighting with another girl, whose name has not been made public.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says there is a security hold on Joanna's case and he could not release any autopsy results.

Prosecutors will not file any charges in the Long Beach case of 10-year-old Joanna Ramos, who died hours after a fight with another elementary school student, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said Wednesday.

The decision concludes what authorities and school officials called a highly delicate and unusual case, given the ages of the children involved.

“This case was a fight between two children that ended with unintended and tragic results,” Long Beach police said in a statement. The department “hopes that its conclusion brings some peace to both families involved, as well as the community.”
    [...]

No arrests were made during the investigation, which has now been closed.

Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, acknowledged the decision, but declined to speak about it because the case involved two juveniles. Prosecutors reviewed the case for slightly more than a month.

Joanna’s mother, Cecilia Villanueva, said she was frustrated by the justice system.

“I’m disappointed and at the same time sad, but what can I do?” she said, adding that she was surprised by the D.A.’s decision.

She said she plans to speak to her attorney about other options. If nothing can be done, she said, “it’s over and we leave it in peace.”

Villanueva said she feels sorry for the 11-year-old girl who fought her daughter: “I think she won’t be happy in her life knowing that she killed someone.”
    [...]
    http://www.ecollegetimes.com/student...0#.T5FLJNWDmSo

The family believes the girl she fought with should be held responsible for her death, but they also believe the school bears some responsibility, so they're filing a lawsuit accusing the school of negligence.

"For me it's like my daughter is dead and the girl, she's free, she can do whatever, and she's still alive, and my daughter's not alive anymore," said Cecilia Villanueva, Joanna's mother. "It's not fair. It's not fair."
    [...]

"How is it that a group of kids can leave the school from an after-school program, go off campus, engage in a fight, and then come back on campus after the fight?" asked attorney Luis Carrillo.

Carrillo says he will file a suit against the Long Beach Unified School District.

"The Long Beach Unified School District, the administrators, the principal all fell asleep," said Carillo. "They were negligent in protecting the children, the students."

Joanna's family is starting a foundation in her name with the goal of educating educators and parents about the dangers of fighting.

"We can help other kids, and we can learn better," said Villanueva. "We can do something for Joanna."

That sums it up pretty well. I understand Joannas parents are mourning their little girl but they could have easily been on the other side of the fence. Would they have wanted Joanna to be charged if it had been the other little girl that had been killed?

I don't see how the school has any culpability in this. If it happened on campus, then expulsion or suspension would be in order.

I do think that juvie time could have been on the table. The girl who killed Joanne may just take this as a welcome addition to her badass reputation. Especially if this is a gangland neighborhood. (?)

In my opinion the school is partially to blame considering she was in an after school program which I took to mean after school daycare. They are responsible for making sure she gets to the program safely and that did not happen. I guess one could argue that the girl broke the rules by going off campus but it should never be allowed when the child goes to after school daycare. I know in the elementry here they are not allowed to leave the building and go directly to care. Then again I know a lot of elementry school's in California have outdoor school buildings which would mean the child would have to go outside and walk from one building to another.

It's tragic that a simply school fight turned out this way. I feel for the parents I really do because I don't know what I would do if this were my child. The other girl didn't mean for her to die so I can see why they didn't press charges. No it's not fair one little girl is walking around alive after the fight and another girl isn't. It's not fair a child died so young over something so petty. Truth be told I am suprised they are going after the school and not filing civil suit against the other girls family.

The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
