Investigators:Dad William Johnson Accused Of Setting Duplex Fire With His Kids Inside

Police say they suspect that William Idris Johnson set his Northglenn home on fire, critically injuring his two young children and himself. 7NEWS blurred the image of a girl pictured with Johnson

Dad, Mom, 2 Kids, 2 Officers Taken To Hospital Ater Fire At Northglenn Duplex
NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- A dad is suspected of assaulting his estranged wife and their two kids, then setting their home on fire early Thursday morning.
Northglenn police said they were initially called by the Aurora Police Department at 2:30 a.m. to contact a hit-and-run suspect and check the well-being of two children.
Northglenn officers said they stopped the vehicle shortly thereafter and checked on the children, who were in the car at the time.
"During the contact, (the father) was cooperative and the children did not appear
to have been harmed," Northglenn police Sgt Ron Haralson said.
However, Aurora did not have any charges against the driver, 27-year-old William Idris Johnson, so Johnson was not detained, Northglenn police Commander Jeremy Sloan said.
At around 4:20 a.m. Northglenn officers responded to a domestic assault call at 110th Drive and York Street.
When they arrived, police said a woman waiting outside told them she had been assaulted by her estranged husband, Johnson. She said Johnson was inside the home assaulting their children.
A neighbor told 7NEWS she was awakened by a banging sound and thought it was the wind storm. Then she heard Johnson's wife screaming outside.
The neighbor, Jeanne Sparkman, said the wife was screaming, "He's trying to kill my kids!" and was holding her hand to a huge bump on her forehead.
"Her face ... her head ... her forehead was like two times the size of a normal forehead. She had blood running down the side of her face. Her eyes were practically closed. It was awful," said Sparkman.
Sparkman said Johnson's wife told her that Johnson had slammed her head into the wall.

Officers Force Their Way Through Barricade After Flash Fire
When police officers tried to contact Johnson at the front door, they determined the residence was on fire.
Two police officers forced their way past a barricaded front door after seeing a flash fire erupt inside the duplex. Northglenn fire said the front door of the home had been barricaded by furniture piled up against it.
The officers tried to rescue the occupants in the home, but were forced back by heavy smoke.
North Metro Fire Rescue firefighters responded around 4:23 a.m. and went into the duplex, where they said they found a large fire on the stairs leading to the second floor.
Firefighters managed to rescue Johnson, the two children and a dog from the second floor. All were unconscious. They said each person was in a separate bedroom when they were rescued.
"It was like a movie. Like you see people pulling the body … (the baby) and her arms were dangling," Sparkman said, crying.
Police did not say if the children had any other injuries.
Johnson, his 30-year-old wife, their 6-year-old girl and 20-month-old boy, and two police officers were taken to three different hospitals.
One child was transported to Children's Hospital. The other child was taken to North Suburban, along with the woman. Johnson and two Northglenn police officers were taken to St. Anthony's North. The police officers were treated for smoke inhalation and released.
The two children and Johnson are listed in critical condition.
Although in the hospital, Johnson is considered to be in custody and being investigated for two counts of attempted homicide, domestic violence and assault, Haralson said.
A dog was taken to a 24-hour veterinarian's office for treatment. Neighbors told 7NEWS another dog and a cat died in the fire.
North Metro Fire Rescue said there is moderate smoke and fire damage to the unit that caught fire. The person living in the second unit was able to return home.

Johnson's Wife Filed For Divorce On Jan 12
According to court documents, Johnson's wife had filed for divorce on Jan. 12.
A neighbor told 7NEWS that Johnson described himself as a stay-at-home dad because he loves taking care of his children.

Aurora Police Explain Initial Request For Welfare Check
Aurora police said they were called at 2:10 a.m. by Johnson's wife. She said her estranged husband drove through the grass of the apartment complex where she was currently living -- located on South Dallas Street and East Jefferson Place.
She described the vehicle as a black Mitsubishi and said her estranged husband may be returning to their home in Northglenn.
She requested officers conduct a welfare check on her children, Aurora police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said.
"Our officers arrived on scene shortly after the call was received and contacted a female party and began the investigation into the incident. The investigating officer was notified that Northglenn PD was in contact with the vehicle in question," Carlson said. "Northglenn officers spoke with our investigating officer and indicated that the male and children appeared unharmed. Furthermore, they indicated that they did not have any independent charges of their own. The APD officer advised Northglenn PD that she was in the early stages of her investigation into the incident that occurred in Aurora, but did not yet have charges."
The Aurora officer continued her investigation at the Aurora apartment complex, where she remained on scene until close to 4 a.m., Carlson said.
The officer told Johnson's wife that the report was going to remain open, she was going to try and contact Johnson and that she was going to consult with detectives first thing in the morning and would be in touch, Carlson said.
The officer left the address on South Dallas Street and attempted to call Johnson and left a message for him.
Less than 30 minutes later, Northglenn police received the 911 call from Johnson's wife who reported that she and her children were being abused and that she thought he was trying to kill the kids.
"The initial incident that occurred in Aurora remains an active and open case therefore further details of the case are not going to be released. Furthermore, the Aurora Police Department is fully cooperating with the Northglenn Police Department in their investigation with the unfortunate events that occurred in their city. Northglenn’s case will take precedence over the Aurora case due to the seriousness of the crime," Carlson said.
Northglenn police said they haven't any prior calls for service at that duplex before Thursday.
Johnson does not have a criminal record, according to a state background check.

Family: Girl Suffered Burns To Face, Hands, Chest
Mom Says Home Was Burning When Estranged Husband Beat Her
NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- A toddler, his 6-year-old sister and their father remained in critical condition Friday after police said the father set fire to their Northglenn duplex early Thursday morning.
The girl had burns over 50 percent of her body, including on her face, chest and arms, the girl's grandfather told 7NEWS reporter Lance Hernandez.
The girl's 20-month-old brother was not burned, but suffered massive smoke inhalation, the grandfather said.
Both children were being treated at Children's Hospital.
Police said the father, 27-year-old William Idris Johnson, was in critical condition at St. Anthony's Hospital. Details on his injuries were not released.
Police said Johnson was in custody in the hospital and being investigated for two counts of attempted homicide, domestic violence and assault.
7NEWS is not identifying the children or their mother because police say they are victims of domestic violence.

Mom Beaten While She's On 911 Call
7NEWS has learned new details of the horrifying confrontation at the duplex at 11037 York St. on Thursday.
The 30-year-old mother had called Northglenn police about 4:20 a.m. Thursday, saying her estranged husband -- Johnson -- had attacked her outside the duplex.
The woman had filed for divorce from Johnson last month and was not living with him, the woman's father said.
But she was concerned about the children's welfare after she said Johnson drove over the grass of the Aurora apartment complex where she was currently living around 2:10 a.m.
She called Aurora police to report the situation and asked for a welfare check on her children. She said she believed that Johnson was driving back to Northglenn.
Aurora police then called Northglenn police, asking them contact a "hit-and-run suspect" and check on the children's well-being.
Police said Northglenn officers stopped the vehicle near the York Street duplex and found that the children appeared OK. Because Aurora police did not have any charges against Johnson, he was not detained, said Northglenn police Commander Jeremy Sloan.
But the mother was still worried about her kids, so she drove to the duplex around 4:20 a.m. and clicked a garage door opener to enter the home.
She saw smoke pouring out of the garage and called 911.
Police said the smoke was actually from the car. Johnson had left the car running in the garage, police said.
As the woman was on the phone with 911 dispatchers, Johnson walked out of the home through the garage, pulled her out of the car and began attacking her, slamming her head into the garage wall, the grandfather said.
Johnson then rushed back into the home and used furniture to barricade himself inside, police said.
Police responding to the 911 call found the distraught, battered mother outside, telling them she had been assaulted by her estranged husband, Johnson. She said Johnson was inside the home and possibly trying to kill their children.

Mom:Rosie Jungst-Johnson, Estranged Husband Tried To Kill Kids To Spite Me
Rosie Jungst-Johnson still wants to ask her estranged husband, "How could you do that to your own kids?" Bill Johnson remains in the hospital after the Feb. 23 fire. He's in critical condition. Their daughter, 5, is on a ventilator and will need skin grafts. Their young son has injuries from smoke inhalation.
Rosie Jungst-Johnson shows the damage inflicted when, she says, her estranged husband reached inside her car, grabbed her head and beat her. Then he ran back into the smoking house, she says, where he barricaded himself and their two children inside.
NORTHGLENN — Two young children are still recovering from severe injuries, nearly a week and a half after police say their father barricaded them inside their home and set the home on fire in Northglenn.
Saturday, their mother, Rosie Jungst-Johnson, still had questions for her children's father, Bill Johnson, her estranged husband, about what happened.
Around 2 a.m. on Feb. 23, Jungst-Johnson said she was at a friend's house in Aurora when she heard her phone ring.
She hung up and then heard a noise.
"I said, 'Oh, my God, it's Bill, crashing into my car,' " Jungst-Johnson said.
She immediately called Aurora police. When they
showed up, she asked them to do something, not knowing if her kids were in the car.
"He hit my car," she said. "I mean, that's a violent, violent act."
Her husband had already taken off for their home in Northglenn.
"I had Northglenn do a welfare check on the kids," she said.
Police there pulled him over and called the Aurora officer investigating.
"I can tell you that when our officers contacted the vehicle, all the children inside the car were safe," Northglenn Police Cmdr. Jeremy Sloan said last week at a news conference after the fire.
The Aurora police officer told Northglenn officers to let Johnson go, both agencies have said.
The officer did not have enough information yet and wrapped up her investigation around 4 a.m.
"I immediately got in my car and drove back up to Northglenn," Jungst-Johnson said. "He must have heard me open the garage door."
Back at her house, she saw his Mitsubishi, some smoke and then him.
"He had grabbed my head and brought it over into the passenger side and beat me for several minutes," she said.
Jungst-Johnson had severe injuries to her head but still managed to call 911.
"Finally, he just stopped. Just stopped out of nowhere and ran back into the house," she said. "All I could see was smoke."
Bill Johnson had barricaded himself inside and started a fire. Police had to break down the door.
They got her son, a toddler, out. They got Johnson out.
"Unfortunately, (my daughter) was the last one out of the house," Jungst-Johnson said. "Fifty percent of her body is burned."
The 5-year-old girl is still on ventilators in the hospital. She must have multiple skin-graft surgeries.
The boy is able to breathe on his own but still has severe injuries from smoke inhalation.
Johnson, his estranged wife says, is still in critical condition.
Jungst-Johnson says her husband seemed different that day. She had just filed for divorce in January. She also questioned the original events in Aurora.
"Why wouldn't that officer take me seriously when I said there's something wrong with these kids?" she said.
Yet Aurora police officials say the officer did everything she could with the information she had.
"If we could have done something different, we would admit that," said Aurora police Sgt. Casidee Carlson. "We would come forward
"He wanted to get reconciled, basically, and I said that's not going to happen," she said.
    with that."
Still, the ultimate question is for Bill Johnson.

"I want to know why. Why would you do that to your kids?" Jungst Johnson said.
The woman he was married to for five years can only wonder.
"He attempted to kill his own children, to spite me," she said.

Two funds are set up for the young children.

8 Surgeries So Far For Girl Burned In Fire
Father Charged With Setting Fire That Burned Girl, Brother
NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- A 6-year-old girl has been through eight surgeries since she was found unconscious in a duplex fire in Northglenn last month.

The child's father, William Johnson, is facing charges of attempted murder, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, arson, assault, criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to animals for allegedly setting the fire with his daughter and 20-month-old son inside.

Firefighters found Johnson and each child in separate bedrooms, unconscious.

Cody, the toddler, is out of the hospital and doing well, according to his mother, Rosie Johnson.

The girl, Kaitlyn, suffered burns over 50 percent of her body, including her face.

"She has a long road to go. She’s unable to speak, but we have a communication system with her hands right now, and she wants to thank the officers as soon as she’s able," said Rosie Johnson. "She’ll probably be in the hospital until this summer."

William Johnson is also still hospitalized.
