A Greenville woman was arrested Friday and charged with attempted first-degree murder after trying to drown her 6-year-old son in a bathtub, police said.
Shaquia Powell, 25, of 304 Paige Drive, remained in the Pitt County Detention Center under no bond. The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at her home. Officers were called to the home to investigate a report of child abuse, a news release issued Sunday said.
According to reports, Powell contacted a neighbor and told him about the attempt, the release said. The neighbor in turn contacted police and also contacted members of Powell’s extended family.
Powell’s family members were on the scene at Paige Drive and assisted officers with the investigation, the release said. Powell was transported by EMS to Vidant Medical Center for evaluation.
She was later released from hospital and transported to the police department. Police found that the child did not appear to be physically injured.
Detectives from the Special Victims Unit responded to the hospital and followed up on the investigation, the release said. They consulted with officials from the Pitt County District Attorney’s office to determine charges.
