STOCKTON, CA - A registered sex offender is behind bars after he broke into a Stockton home and the 15-year-old girl who lived there locked herself in a bathroom and called 911, police say.
Officer Pete Smith with the Stockton Police Department said Clifford Deed kicked his way in through the back door of the victim's home at 9:15 Wednesday morning. 15-year-old Vanessa Paez heard the noise and ran into the bathroom, locking the door and calling 911.
"I was getting dressed when I heard someone banging on the door to my bedroom. I then grabbed my cell phone," said Vanessa Paez.
Meantime, Smith said Deed burglarized the home and also tried once to break into the locked bathroom.
The teen said she ran to her bathroom and tried locking the door, but the lock was broken. So she braced her 100-pound body against the sink and held the door shut.
"He was trying to open the door, but I pushed as hard as I could," Paez adds.
Officers arrived and took Deed into custody.
Smith said Deed was living at 1333 E. Charter Way, the Stockton Motor Inn, along with other parolees. He told police he was just walking around the girl's neighborhood when he decided to break in a house, Smith said.
Deed is in San Joaquin County Jail facing burglary and parole violation charges, according to police.
