    Missing girl
Kimberly Smith was last seen driving a silver 2007 Mazda CX-9, with Texas plates BMZ-390. It has tinted windows and a pink and green Harley-Davidson decal on the rear window, according to police.
Jessica is about 5-foot-1 and 120 pounds, with brown hair just past her shoulders, police said.
Kimberly Smith is about 5-foot-2 and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Missing girl's mother had threatened harm to her children, police say
    Feb 8 2012
FORT WORTH -- Relatives of an 11-year-old girl missing for a second day told police that her mother is mentally ill and has threatened suicide and harm to her children, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
An Amber Alert was renewed for Jessica Smith, who was taken from her home in far north Fort Worth sometime overnight Monday by her mother, Kimberly Smith, 42, police said.
The mother has custody of the daughter, and they both lived at the house in the 7300 block of Indiana Avenue.
Police initially did not explain why an Amber Alert was issued when they knew that the missing child was with the custodial parent.

Investigators went to the Smith house and learned that, the previous evening, Kimberly and Jessica Smith were "involved in a domestic violence incident."
"Smith placed Jessica in imminent danger of serious bodily injury," Criado said, but the girl did not appear to be seriously injured.
The next morning, family members told police, when they realized that Smith and Jessica were not in the house, they assumed that Jessica had gone to school.
Jessica's father, Phillip Monroe Smith, 36, is facing a charge of sexual abuse of a child under 14, police and court records show. He was arrested in October and released from jail after posting $100,000 bail.
Phillip and Kimberly Smith are in the process of divorce. The family was ordered to undergo psychological evaluations, and the divorce case was referred to mediation, records show.
"This is a complex criminal investigation involving mental illness and allegations of sexual abuse that may or may not be true," Criado said. "Therefore, information is very limited in order to preserve evidence (and) protect potential victims and the integrity of the investigation."
According to Department of Public Safety policy, Amber Alerts expire every 24 hours, Criado wrote. Police asked that it be re-issued Wednesday.
James Monroe Smith, 76, the child's grandfather, said in an interview that he had not seen Jessica since his son moved out more than a year ago.
"I cannot believe her mother would hurt her, but you never know," the elder Smith said. "We're praying. That's all we can do."

Father of missing Fort Worth girl faces sexual abuse charge
    Feb. 08, 2012
FORT WORTH -- The father of a missing 11-year-old Fort Worth girl was arrested in October on a charge of sexually abusing a young child, and the estranged family was ordered to undergo psychological evaluations, records show.

Police on Wednesday continued to search for Jessica Smith, who was taken from her Indiana Avenue home by her mother, Kimberly, overnight Monday.

They have said that she might be in danger, but provided no further details. Kimberly Smith, 42, was living with her daughter at the home and apparently has custody.

Jessica's father, Phillip Monroe Smith, 36, is facing a charge of sexual abuse of a child under 14, police and court records show. He was arrested in October and released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond, records from the Tarrant County district clerk's office show.
Phillip and Kimberly Smith are going through a divorce that has been described as contentious.
A relative speculated that the mother may have taken Jessica to prevent Phillip Smith from visiting his 11-year-old daughter.
Police have not said whether Phillip Smith is involved in Jessica's disappearance, nor do the records indicate the identity of the alleged abuse victim.

The court set forth temporary orders in October that required psychological and social evaluations for Kimberly, Jessica and Phillip Smith. The divorce case was referred to mediation.
Kimberly Smith was driving a silver 2007 Mazda CX-9, with Texas plates BMZ-390. It has tinted windows and a pink and green Harley-Davidson decal on the rear window, according to police.
Jessica is about 5-foot-1 and 120 pounds, with brown hair just past her shoulders, police said.
A photo of Jessica distributed by police shows her wearing glasses, but she was not wearing them at the time of her abduction.
Kimberly Smith is described as 5-foot-2 and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Kimberly Smith has a tattoo cross on the back of her neck and a decorative tattoo on her back, police said.

Facebook message appears on missing Texas girl's page
    Feb 11 2011
FORT WORTH, Texas - Police nationwide are still searching for the missing 11-year-old who was allegedly abducted by her mother four days ago. But messages that appeared online Friday have family members hopeful.
Fort Worth police confirm they are investigating activity on Jessica Smith’s Facebook page.
A message posted at about 3 p.m. said, “Everyone I'm fine you all can stop worrying about me. Just stop trying to contact me. I'm just done. I'm done with everyone."

Later the message, "Noo!! Guys it's really me! Just remember I'm safe I'll be home soon.. And thanks for all the support! :)" was added to the page.

Police said they are trying to determine who posted the messages and who has access to the girl’s account.

Jessica and her mother Kimberly Smith disappeared late Monday or early Tuesday from their home in north Fort Worth. That was after family members said Smith threatened to hurt Jessica on Monday night.

An Amber Alert was issued because police said they believe Jessica is in grave danger. They said Smith has a history of mental illness and has in the past threatened to commit suicide and injure her children.
Anyone with information about Jessica’s whereabouts is still encouraged to call 911.

They have been found safe in New Mexico! Found out last night after the Grammy's lol.

Jessica Smith found safe in New Mexico
by MONIKA DIAZ and MARCUS MOORE

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Eleven-year-old Jessica Smith and her mother, Kimberly were located in their vehicle, nine miles south of Tres Piedras, New Mexico, an area on the edge of Carson National Forest, according to a release from Fort Worth police — 550 miles from home.

"It is with great joy and satisfaction to announce that the nationwide search that began on Tuesday, February 7,2012, has been canceled," the police statement said.

"The deputies spotted that car about nine miles south of U.S. 64 and U.S. 285 near the Carson National Forest," said KOAT reporter Liz McKernan in Taos, New Mexico. "We are told that they were a little bit lethargic, but that Jessica herself was in very good spirits, and obviously very happy to be found."

Authorities said a deputy spotted Jessica and her mother along the remote highway about 30 feet off the pavement. They appeared to be very exhausted and hungry. Both were transported to a Taos hospital to be checked out.

According to police, Jessica did not appear to physically injured, but Kimberly Smith was described as being "out of it."

"The ambulance pulled up and we were able to get video of mom getting admitted into the emergency room," McKernan said.

"They are okay" confirmed Caitlin Fields, the victim's sister. "Thanks to everyone for all the support."

Tom Pappas, the attorney for Jessica's father Phillip Smith, released this statement Sunday evening: "Phillip wants to thank everyone for all the prayers and efforts that they made for his daughter's safe return."

Kimberly Smith will be extradited to Fort Worth on two felony warrants, aggravated assault and endangering a child. The warrants were issued after the investigation showed "acts of violence" took place, police said.

Neighbors of the Smith family were overjoyed to learn that Jessica and her mom were both safe.

"I would tell her that I was praying for her, and I was hoping she'd come back, and she did," said Jessica's friend Katy Chitwood.

Tammy Vu and Caitlyn Stanley tied yellow ribbons on and around the Smith home, which also has a sign that reads: "God bless Jessica."

"We thank everyone involved with the successful mission with this child abduction investigation as well as the apprehension of Kimberly Smith," the police statement said. "If not for the actions of the school officials, witnesses, reporting parties, along with the coordinated efforts of our law enforcement partners combined with the public and our media partners, this unfortunate sensitive and complicated investigation would not have ended with such a positive outcome."
