A Deltona U.S. Army veteran accused his estranged wife of cheating on him and then beat her several times in the head with a dumbbell, sheriff's investigators said.
Gary Jones, 35, then drove away from the Courtland Boulevard home in his Cadillac bearing a license plate that reads "Wounded Veteran," deputies said. Jones is still at large but deputies have a warrant for his arrest charging him with aggravated battery on a person using a deadly weapon and false imprisonment, said sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught.
According to the report, Jones and his wife, Tyronia Jones, 25, are separated. The woman, who lives in Daytona Beach with her mother, went to the home Saturday at 1:16 p.m. to take food to their children, who were spending the week with their father in Deltona.
When Tyronia Jones and her mother got to the home, the husband said he wanted to talk to her. The mother stayed in the living room with the children and Tyronia and Gary Jones went into a bedroom, deputies said.
Gary Jones started questioning Tyronia Jones about a gold truck seen in her grandmother's driveway where the woman stayed after going to church, investigators said.
Gary Jones then started beating his estranged wife, kicking and punching her, deputies said. He then grabbed a 3-pound green dumbbell and beat the woman 10 to 12 times in the head, the report said.
When the woman tried to crawl out of the bedroom, Gary Jones grabbed her by the feet and pulled her back into the bedroom and continued beating her, deputies said.
The mother heard her daughter screaming and when she opened the door, Gary Jones, who is known to have firearms, ran past her and went to the garage and left in his Cadillac, the report states.
Deputies found Tyronia Jones sitting on a couch bleeding from a cut to the left side of her head. The woman had several bruises on her face and body, investigators said. A trail of blood was visible from the bedroom to the kitchen, and blood splatters and trails were also found in the bedroom, deputies said.
