"My brother is kind hearted. If he has it he will give it to you. He's never had any kind of violent past or history. He don't even have a record," said Brunn.
Maybe poor little Jorelys didn't want it and that's what set him off.

And not having a record doesn't mean innocent. It just means you never got caught.

I'm praying he ain't that dumb enough to do something like that,
Really? REALLY? That's the best defense he could come up with? Raping and killing a 7-year old is something done by people who are dumb? How about it's done by people who are devoid of human decency, soulless, heart dead and total shitstains.

None of his family members were present as murder suspect Ryan Brunn made his first court appearance Thursday in Cherokee County Superior Court in connection with the slaying of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera of Canton.

Wearing an orange jail suit and a bulletproof vest, a shackled Brunn was led into the courtroom in downtown Canton, where he sat beside two court-appointed public defenders.

After glancing around the courtroom, the 20-year-old suspect showed little emotion as charges were read against him. At one point, he hung his head. When asked about his education level, Brunn told Judge Frank Mills that he had completed the 10th grade.

Brunn, previously of Dahlonega, is accused of gagging, binding, raping, beating and stabbing Jorelys before tossing her body into an industrial trash compactor at the apartment complex where they both lived.
    [...]

Her mouth was duct-taped, her hands and feet bound with plastic ties, and her body had been compacted by the mechanical dumpster only operable by maintenance staff.

Brunn has been charged with homicide and making false statements, according to the affidavit for his arrest warrant. Additional charges may be filed by the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office.

The hearing lasted only a few minutes before deputies escorted Brunn out of the courtroom and back to the county's jail, where he is being held without bond.

    "He's separated from other inmates,"
Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said after the hearing.

The two younger sisters of Jorelys Rivera were returned to their family Thursday afternoon, Channel 2 Action News reported.

"They're going home with their parents," attorney John Connolly told the AJC outside a Cherokee County courtroom earlier. "The family is very pleased."

Sheriff: Deputies failed to report blood at crime scene
    CANTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison said two of his deputies had a mental error when they failed to report finding blood in a bathroom where 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera is believed to have been murdered.
The Canton child went missing on Friday Dec. 3 and a massive search ensued where local law enforcement agencies, the Cherokee County Fire Department and Sheriff's office and civilians assisted in the search for Rivera.
Canton Police were the lead investigators. Two deputies, one, a three-year veteran, the other a trainee, went through the vacant apartment at the River Ridge apartments on Saturday, Dec. 4 searching for what Garrison said was a "live missing girl."
"That is what they were doing, trying to move fast to clear a lot of property in a short period of time. The apartments were trashed and very dirty and their mission clearly to find a missing girl," Garrison said.
Garrison said if his men had reported the blood on Saturday, it would not have saved Rivera. Autopsy reports indicate she was killed about an hour after her abduction. But, it did have a direct impact on the investigation.
"It would have went criminal much faster and the discovery of her body would have been obtained probably 24 to 36 hours sooner," Garrison said. "This is call for more training. These deputies truly are extremely remorseful. Even the officer who is a trainer, he has been with the agency for three years is an outstanding employee. They are great employees. This is a mistake of the mind, simply a mental error."
The FBI was not called in to look for Rivera until Sunday afternoon.
On Monday, Dec. 5, Rivera's body was found in an apartment complex trash compactor.
Maintenance worker Ryan Brunn, 20, has been charged with her murder.
The deputy who is a three-year veteran will have some disciplinary action taken against him. But the Sheriff said the officer-in -raining will not, since he was a trainee. Neither men will be fired.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office will hold a press conference Friday afternoon to announce what kind of discipline the deputy will face.

Ryan Brunn pleads guilty in Jorelys Rivera's murder
    CANTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The maintenance man accused of murdering a 7-year-old Canton girl pled guilty to murder Tuesday.
Ryan Brunn appeared in court where he pled guilty in the rape and murder of Jorelys Rivera.
Last week, Brunn was indicted in the 7-year-old's death on one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.

He was also indicted for one count of aggravated child molestation, one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes, and one count of false imprisonment.
According to Canton police, Rivera was playing on the playground at the River Ridge apartment complex on Dec. 2. It was when she returned to her apartment that Brunn allegedly lured her to a vacant apartment nearby.
Detectives said Brunn beat, raped and stabbed the girl to death.

Brunn also lived at the River Ridge apartment complex and worked there as a maintenance man.

Guilty plea, life sentence in Jorelys Rivera murder
An apartment maintenance worker pleaded guilty in Cherokee County on Tuesday to the abduction, rape and murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera to avoid facing the death penalty.

Ryan Brunn, 20, was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

"I would like to apologize for everything I've done," Brunn said during the hearing, in which he was required by the judge to take the witness stand before his plea was accepted.

He turned to the dead girl's family and said "Lo siento" -- "I'm sorry" in Spanish.

Brunn had been indicted on charges of murder, aggravated child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, false imprisonment, abandonment of a dead body, making a false statement, sexual exploitation of children and two counts each of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and cruelty to children in the first degree.

Jorelys, an independent and outgoing first-grader, went missing from the park at her River Ridge apartment complex in Canton on Dec. 2 after telling friends she thirsty and was going inside to get a drink.

    [...]
Brunn, of Dahlonega, moved to the complex in November, boasting on Facebook that he would live there free in return for doing maintenance work.

    That's swift justice.

The second type of life sentence is life without parole (also known as “LWOP”). A person serving
this sentence will never be considered for parole and will have to spend the rest of his or her life

Convicted murderer reveals graphic details in murder

    CANTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Ryan Brunn, the man that was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in the murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, revealed graphic details about the day he killed her.
On Dec. 2, Brunn said he saw Rivera playing on the playground at the apartment complex where he lived and worked as a maintenance man.
Brunn said he had seen Rivera roller skating around the apartment complex, but never talked to her. Brunn took one of the skates from outside the girl's building and planted it in the vacant unit. He said he then took a picture of the skate, and when Rivera returned to her building, he asked her if it was hers.
Brunn said Rivera followed him to the empty unit and saw her skate inside. Brunn then shut the door behind them and told the girl to lay down on the floor and perform a sexual act on herself.
According to Brunn, Rivera then said she had to go to the bathroom and Brunn followed her there. He said he began to get nervous because the 7-year-old asked when she would be able to go home.
Brunn said he then told Rivera to lay down in the bathtub and he tied her hands together and duct taped her mouth shut. He again told her to perform a sexual act on herself.. Moments later, Brunn said he "freaked out" and cut her throat with a razor blade. He then said he got the skate and hit her five times on the head with it.
Brunn said he put the girl's body in a bag, put her in a trash compactor on the property and clocked out of work.
Over the weekend he hung out with friends, smoked pot, and watched football.
By Sunday, Brunn said he began to get nervous because of the GBI agents on the property and wrote a note on the back of a McDonalds receipt that read, "Child in trash compactor," and taped it to the trash compactor.
"I never had the idea of killing a child in my life," said Brunn.
When asked if he was mentally stable, Brunn said, "I know right from wrong."
Brunn did say he never actually touched Rivera himself. Police found child porn on his computer

Post Ryan Brunn Pleaded Guilty To The Murder Of Jorelys Rivera

Canton, GA – Yesterday, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn pleaded guilty to murdering 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera*and*was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. Rivera went missing from an apartment complex last month after telling friends*she was going home to get drinks. Her dead body would be found in one of the complex’s trash bins three days later. She had been severely beaten and stabbed repeatedly in the face, neck and chest. It wasn’t long before police would arrest Brunn, a*maintenance*worker at the complex with no criminal history, and indict him on 13 counts including*murder and child molestation.*Brunn’s attorney had originally said his client would plead not guilty, but instead Brunn entered a guilty plea at a hearing where he also described*what happened to Rivera in between the time she was last seen and when she was later found in the trash. Turns out Brunn had never spoken with Rivera before the day he killed her and only chose her after finding one of her skates and coming up with a sinister plan. On the day Rivera went missing, Brunn intercepted her as she walked home for sodas and showed her a picture of her skate and asked if it was hers.*When she confirmed that it was, he told her to follow him and he would take her to it. What he actually did was take her inside an abandoned apartment where he sexually molested her after instructing her to drop her pants. Fearing she would tell on him, he bound her arms, put tape over her face and then placed her in a bathtub where he slit her throat. When she didn’t die*immediately, Brunn told the judge he used a ‘hammer-like object’ (CNN says it was the skate she had come for) to repeatedly hit her with before stabbing her in the chest. Afterwards he put her (hopefully) dead body in a plastic bag, dumped her in the garbage*compacter and turned it on. After hanging out with some friends later that day and smoking meth, he went back and operated the compacter a second time. Brunn told the court that he knew what he did was wrong, and while high on drugs wrote “she’s in the trash can” on the back of a McDonald’s receipt that he taped to the compacter. Brunn gave this testimony in front of Rivera’s visibly upset family members who he also apologized to. Rivera’s motherKeep Reading...

    http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/16556215/report

Among its findings, the report indicated Canton Police did not notify the community of a missing until more than six hours after learning about the disappearance.

The report found that the department did not develop or execute a comprehensive investigative plan, "seeking significant outside agency assistance", until several hours after the first report of the missing child.

The report concludes that "the Canton Police Department developed the mindset that the missing seven-year-old girl was probably a runaway", inconsistent with accepted police practices in such cases.

It also concluded that "there was a clear absence of leadership by the agency head predicated on the assumption that this was a routine runaway or missing child. It adds that Chief Lance "failed to act after he was placed on notice of the incident, in a manner that galvanized the available resources and communicated a sense of urgency to his personnel and assisting outside agencies."

The report did determine "no police action could have been initiated for undertaken" that would have prevented the girl's death."

But it concluded "it is clear that if a subsequent missing child report were to be approached in the same manner as the Rivera case, the Canton Police Department may indeed miss an opportunity to save a victim's life."

It's a bit of a relief to know he did not rape her but he deserves to burn in hell for the everything he did to her. He would still be alive and he would still be able to live on the streets if he had just ended it before he tied her up. I don't feel sorry for him at all. I do feel sorry for her mother and family who now have to deal with even more shock.

I'm sure what I'm going to say is not going to agree with everyone, BUT, this is my take.

These pieces of shit SHOULD kill themselves. All they are doing is overcrowding our jails & prisons, pleading I DIDN'T DO IT, or I did it because I'm insane, bleeding the system & bleeding all of us including our children in the future when they join the work force. We will be paying for them to sit their nasty mother fucking asses in prison until they die or get let loose in 10-15 years. Fuck him, let him take the bitch-ass cowards way out, let this girls family live in peace knowing this man will NEVER hurt another child. I could only wish that every "man" who hurt a child would just kill themselves. The world would be a better place!

    AMEN

Double edged sword here for me. In one breath, he made sure his trip to hell came sooner rather than later. In the same breath,I've seen in many cases like this where it actually hurts the families all over again. He never truly had to pay for what he did. In many ways, it's a perp's final middle finger to the justice system and the families of the victims.

Post Ryan Brunn Found Dead After Apparent Suicide

Canton, GA — Just days after pleading guilty to the brutal murder of 7-year-old*Jorelys Rivera, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn was found dead in his jail cell. “Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:15 p.m.,” said Kristin Stancil, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Corrections. “He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 5:37 p.m. of an apparent suicide.” Stancil would not say how Brunn died or whether he was under a suicide watch at the time of his death, but 11Alive is reporting that a source close to the investigation has revealed that Brunn*committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell. Jorelys’ father,*Ricardo Galarza, told CNN en Espanol that learning of Brunn’s death partly made him “feel good but, on the other hand, it doesn’t because my daughter will never be with me again.” He went on to say that*he felt that a lifetime of Brunn being watched after, “eating three times a day (and) sleeping with air conditioning” while in prison was not enough. “What I wanted was for them to put him in the electric chair and burn him,” Galarza said. “I would have taken him there myself and prepared it, so he would burn.” An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow. Good riddance…

Child murderer's story began falling apart in polygraph test

Atlanta (CNN) -- The day after little Jorelys Rivera's mangled body was found in a suburban Atlanta trash compactor, Ryan Brunn sat in a stark room for a police interview. He began with confidence, but ended with trouble.

Keith Sitton, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, hooked up the jeans-clad Brunn to a polygraph machine. Then, he fired off a series of questions to the 20-year-old maintenance man. A videotape of Brunn's polygraph test was released Thursday.

"Regarding that girl, do you intend to answer these questions truthfully?"

    "Yes."

"Did you participate in any way in causing the death of that girl?"

    "No."

"Did you cause the death of that girl?"

    "No."

"Do you know for sure who caused the death of that girl?"

    "No."

Sitton asked the questions three times. Each time, Brunn said he had nothing to do with Jorelys' killing.

By the end of the interview, Sitton knew better. Brunn had turned into a prime suspect.

In the videotape, he tells Brunn that he did poorly on the questions regarding his alleged participation in Jorelys' death and the disposal of her body.

"I can see you're not doing good on this test," Sitton says. "Those two questions are really bothering me."

"I'm not holding back," Brunn says. "I promise you. I'll take the test again."

But that was not an option for Brunn.

The next day, on December 7, he was arrested.

Eventually, he pleaded guilty and, standing before a judge in a Cherokee County courthouse, he described in detail how he enticed, molested and killed Jorelys, 7, in Canton, 40 miles north of Atlanta.

After he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, Brunn hanged himself with his sweathshirt in a prison cell.

It was that polygraph test that was started Brunn's unraveling.

"I've been doing this for a long time," Sitton tells Brunn at the start of the session.

But Brunn seems not at all concerned about the questions he is about to face.

Some people think they can beat a polygraph test, said Dr. Peter Ash, a forensic psychiatrist at Emory University in Atlanta.

"The fact is that most of them can't do it," he said. "You can control how you look. You can't control how you sweat."

Besides, said Ash, criminals are not known for good judgment.

His shirt sleeve rolled up to his shoulders, Brunn begins by telling Sitton that on a scale of one to 10, he is a 7.5 on the truth meter. That he had lied the day before when police asked him whether he'd run the trash compactor at the River Ridge Apartments in Canton, where Jorelys's body was found.

"I should have just told the truth straight up," Brunn says. "But I didn't. I was scared."

Brunn tells Sitton that his family was originally from New York but he had been living in Dahlonega, Georgia. He moved to the Canton complex in November, where he was living at a discount and working in maintenance.

He'd finished 10th grade but no more. Sitton tells him it's never too late to graduate.

Brunn went to Honduras a few years back on a church mission to help rebuild houses for the needy.

Sutton asks him if he smoked marijuana. Brunn admits to smoking the night before.

He answers Sitton's questions with apparent ease, not as a man who had committed a heinous crime. Later in court, he would describe how he used a roller skate to lure Jorelys into a vacant apartment. He told the judge he made the girl undress and wanted to take her for "sexual purposes."

He said he got scared that she would go home and tell her parents what had happened. So he struck her with the skate, slit her throat and tossed her body into the compactor. He even taped a handwritten note telling investigators that Jorelys was in there, almost as though he wanted his crime to be discovered.

By the end of the polygraph test, Brunn's voice is slight. He appears more nervous and goes outside to smoke a cigarette.

When he returns, Sitton confronts him about his lies.

"There's something on this that you're not telling us. Something that you are keeping to yourself," he says. "What is it you're holding back? Because we're trying to solve this thing."

Brunn fiddles with his cell phone.

Sitton tells him not to worry about his calls, that he's got more important things to worry about.

"It's just written all over you. Something's bothering you."

"I am not bothered at all."

"You haven't told the complete truth about everything."

    "I have."

It turns out Brunn lied about smoking pot, as well. He had smoked that morning, not the night before, as he said previously. Sitton tells him that he is concerned about Brunn's marijuana habit.

Brunn says he gets high but "it doesn't make me crazy. I promise you that."

Before the video cuts off, Sitton asks Brunn about allegations he faced in Virginia before his move to Georgia. He had been accused of sexually fondling another girl.

"You know what I'm talking about," Sitton says.

    "I don't," Brunn replies.

"Remember I said you had to be 100% truthful? I asked you if anyone made accusations. So what you done is told me a lie. You also lied about the trash compactor."

"They put things in that child's head," Brunn says. "I'm a good person. I didn't do nothing to that little Spanish girl and I didn't do nothing to (the other) girl."

    [..]
Later in court, he would tell Jorelys' family that he was sorry. "Lo siento," he said in Spanish.

But in front on Jorelys' sobbing mother, Brunn's apology fell far short.

Two days later, he, too, was dead.

Mother of murdered Canton girl files lawsuit
    CANTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The mother of a 7-year-old Canton girl who was brutally murdered in Dec. 2011 is filing a lawsuit.
Jorelys Rivera was sexually assaulted and murdered by Ryan Brunn, a maintenance man at apartment complex where the Rivera's lived.
On Thursday, Joselinne Rivera filed suit against the owner of the apartment complex, River Ridge at Canton, L.P. and the management company, McCormack Baron Ragan Management Services, Inc.
The lawsuit alleges the apartment complex was negligent in hiring Brunn to work in the complex because they knew, or should have known, that Brunn had a history of pedophilia and child sexual assault.
"Brunn was a predator who should never have been hired to work in an apartment community, particularly one with young children," said attorney Lloyd N. Bell, an attorney in Atlanta, Georgia, who represents Ms. Rivera. "We believe the apartment complex knew that Ryan Brunn had a history of pedophilia and child sexual assault before they hired him. We also believe that Brunn had a close personal relationship with the property manager and leasing agent. They chose to look the other way and hired Brunn for a job that gave him direct access to children.
"Young Jorelys was tortured and suffered a horrific death as a result of their negligence. We are determined to hold the complex accountable for their actions and obtain justice for Jorelys and her family. We are also hopeful this lawsuit will motivate other apartment owners around the country to review their hiring practices and procedures to help protect other families from experiencing a similar tragedy."
Brunn was hired by River Ridge at Canton apartments in November of 2011.
About three and a half weeks after he was hired, Brunn lured Jorelys from the complex playground with one of her roller skates into a vacant apartment.

I'm thinking that mama is just looking for a payday. At that guys age I'm not sure he had a record of pedophelia, What I think I'm trying to say is that pedophiles usually are operating alot longer than this guy before they really come to the attention of the law and are arrested.

Beside the fact that it was alleged that mama never really looked after Jorelys very good either. I know mama works/worked and had to sleep, but then you get someone else to watch a kid that age, you just don't let them roam wild, because things happen, hopefully never things like what happened here to Jorelys.

thats the first thing I thought of
it came out right at the beginning she was known for her kids running and her not checking on them
Had neighbors like that when we first moved here
Mom was out one day and dad was with kids and the 2 oldest were 4 and 6 and ran, never checked on
the youngest was 1yo and I saw her one day walking down the road
I live on the busiest road in the city
on the river it takes the route of the whole city so its always packed
I ran out and grabbed her took her to the door and flipped right out on dad

I have no issue with the mother filing suit IF in fact the complex knew he had history of pedophiolia. If it makes hiring practices safer by apartment managers, so be it. This woman lost her baby in a most brutal way by a predator. I don't see this as a gains for money, nothing may even come from it. She's probably grasping at straws in desperation and in grief, anything to feel she's making some of this very wrong, right. And I see a real concern for hires being checked carefully. They have access to abandoned apartment via codes and compact operating dumpsters owned by the complex. It seems like a well purposed a lawsuit I hope something comes of it if it turns out there is fault to be found.

I'm not entirely clear on whether mom was negligent, seems she was to some degree. I'm not suren if she was out of town or the teen was watching the kids while she was in the home?...dunno. I will say. Momma's keep your babies close to you and your eye's on potential threats.

I only wish this fucker had died in as much anguish as Jorelys did.
That he doesn't breath our air, take up space anymore is fine with me.
My deepest, heartfelt sympathies to the family.

Jorelys, light the heaven's with your smile. . . may the angels grace your sweet face.

Ryan Brunn Police Interview: Tape Of Jorelys Rivera Killer Released
ATLANTA — "I didn't have, like, the intention of killing a kid," Ryan Brunn told police after he pleaded guilty to molesting a girl, slashing her throat and dumping her body in a trash bin. In a candid, three-hour interview, Brunn went into detail about how and why he lured the girl to an empty apartment – and when he made the decision to kill her.

Convicted child killers don't often agree to such frank interviews with police, and in this case, Brunn gave them a glimpse into the mind of a murderer.

"I've never done something like this in my life," said Brunn, who recounted his thoughts after the murder. "`Am I going to get caught?' I didn't think I was. I was going so crazy I left the gloves, I left the ties on the floor."

The worker gloves and plastic ties were among several pieces of evidence that linked Brunn to the Dec. 2 killing.
    [...]
In the interview, the investigators delved into Brunn's history and practiced different techniques to gain his trust. Sometimes they encouraged him to complete sentences and thoughts by staying quiet themselves. Other times they asked leading questions, prompting Brunn to correct them or offer more insight.

During one exchange, Brunn said it was only after the girl asked to go to the bathroom that he realized he could go to jail if he released her. It was then he decided he had to kill her.
"I know this is hard to say, but I don't think what happened would have happened if she hadn't gone to the bathroom," Brunn said.
Detailed interviews of the kind investigators conducted with Brunn can reveal patterns of behavior before, during and after a crime, said Bob Ingram, a retired Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent who has conducted dozens of such interrogations.

"You can read books and you can study cases, but I think the true learning takes place when you interview the offenders after the fact," said Ingram, who teaches law enforcement interviewing techniques.

GBI Special Agent Dustin Hamby, who helped interview the 20-year-old Brunn, said he learned that young suspects should be confronted early with physical evidence to elicit a confession more quickly.

"He told us that he had resolved himself to not tell the truth, but had we put a picture or the gloves that we found at the scene that he left, that he potentially would have confessed at that point or admitted that he was involved," Hamby said.

The investigators offered their own theories when Brunn wouldn't divulge details. During one exchange, the agents pressed Brunn repeatedly on how Jorleys got deep cuts on her face and chest.

"It's either you hesitating to try to get the courage up to cut her throat or you're trying to get her to do what you want her to do or it's just plain out torture," Hamby said. "It's one of the three, and I don't know which one it is, and that's why I want to know."

Brunn insisted that he wasn't responsible for those injuries.

"What's done is done," he said. "I already went to court. But I don't know how that happened."

At times, he professed to be confused by his actions. He said he didn't know why he singled out Rivera, though he acknowledged watching her at the bus stop and being attracted to Hispanic girls. On the other hand, he sometimes had a clearer recollection, such as his insistence that he didn't have sex with the child, although he said he initially planned to do so.

Interviewing a suspect, or even a convicted killer, can be a mental game, and officers are not sure whether the person is bragging or lying.

"They don't want to tell you, but their ego sometimes overrides that. They want to say something that lets you know they're extremely clever," said Ingram, the retired GBI agent. "They don't want to get themselves in trouble but they want to get credit for what they've done."
