7 Year Old Jorelys Rivera Is Missing *found deceased*

    CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. —
Police have been searching for a missing 7-year-old since Friday afternoon.

The girl, Jorely Rivera, was playing in the playground of her River Ridge apartment complex on River Ridge Drive in Canton. She was being watched by a teen who last saw her around 5 p.m., Canton police said. Rivera’s father lives in Puerto Rico and her mother was out of town.

Around 40 officers with dogs launched a search for Rivera, at one point, going door to door. Police have been searching for her since 5:30 p.m.

Canton police said Rivera is 2 feet tall and 80 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt, blue jeans and black boots.

I think they mean 3 feet tall. 2 feet tall and 80 pounds? Fine if she was an Oompa Loompa. My 5 year old son is 42 inches tall and 45 pounds and right in the middle percentile. But I sure hope they find this poor girl. Watched by a teen, while her parents were out of town? Not the best decision and one they may pay for in heartbreak, God dammit.

Police: Missing 7-Year-Old Canton Girl Abducted
Active search turns into abduction investigation

CANTON, Ga. - Authorities in Canton now believe that the missing 7-year-old girl may have been abducted. Police and volunteers were out Saturday searching a good portion around the apartment complex where she was last seen.

A spokesperson for the Canton Police Department said that Jorely Rivera was last seen around 5 p.m. Friday at the River Ridge Apartments in Canton. Police and volunteers had been searching a little about a 2 miles radius around the complex. Probation officers and deputies also canvassed area registered sex offenders.

Investigators were working with school officials to compile a list of family and friends he girl knows, but as the hours worn on Saturday, they started to handle the case as an abduction case out of caution for the child.

Jorely was last seen wearing a pink shirt, blue jeans and black boots. Police do not believe she would have access to a change of clothes on her own.

Mother speaks about missing 7-year-old daughter

CANTON, Ga. - After nearly 30 hours of searching, state and local authorities in Canton are considering the disappearance of a 7-year-old girl to be abduction.

11Alive's Duffie Dixon to Jorelys Rivera's mother, Joselin, Saturday night. Speaking through a translator, she said, "There were several kids out there playing. Why her?"

Joselin Rivera describes her daughter as "friendly, sweet, had a lot of friends and everyone just loves her."

Jorelys was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. Friday at a playground at her Canton-area apartment complex, River Ridge. She was being watched by a teenage girl, who also watching several other children, said Canton Police Detective Candy Worthy.

With absolutely no leads coming in, Canton police decided Saturday afternoon to begin investigating Jorelys' case as abduction. Authorities searched with canines and helicopters Saturday, and went door-to-door.

Joselin Rivera pleaded for her daughter's safe return, saying "Bring her back. Whether man or female, whomever took her, just please bring her back."

Meantime, the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services has taken Joselin Rivera's two other children into custody. They say this is not related to the case of Jolerys, and was done after searching the home.

Oh man, I hope she's found and she's ok. Both parents were out of town and she was being watched by a teen? I'm wondering how old the kid was that was watching her?

All I can think about is the little girl, Skylar Kauffman, that was last seen playing in the playground of her apartment complex, but her body was found after a neighbor had raped and killed her in the basement of their building. I really hope this isn't the case here.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's department is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a Canton girl's safe return.

Search teams covered 35 acres Sunday looking for 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera who disappeared Friday evening.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations joined the search for Rivera on Sunday. The Federal Bureau of Investigations is expected to get involved Monday.

Investigators said so far they do not have any strong leads.

"It's frustrating but they [searchers] can't lose focus," Jeff Hall, emergency management director for Canton police, said.
    [...]

Police believe Jorelys was abducted from the playground at the River Ridge Apartment complex after her teenage babysitter left her there unsupervised.

Family friend Reynold Gonzales translated Rivera's comments.

"She thinks someone picked up her daughter and put her in a car," Gonzalez said.

Jorelys' parents hugged and said they would pray for good news soon.
    [...]

Sandy Lindsey said it wasn't the first time the children were left unsupervised.

"They don't pay attention to their kids very well. This little girl runs around all over the place so anyone could have made friends with her," Lindsey said.

Police said Rivera's two other young children have been taken into DFACS custody because they weren't being watched properly.

Saturday police setup a command center at the apartment complex where Jorelys went missing.

Police said two sex offenders lived in the apartment complex and they planned to interview them along with other sex offenders nearby.

Probably read it in post #5 LOL

    Here's an earlier article:
The girl had been in the care of a teenage family friend when she disappeared Friday. She was last seen at a playground in her apartment complex. Canton Police Detective Candy Worthy said Jorelys had gone back to her apartment to get a drink.

    She never came back.

"There were several kids out there playing. Why her?" her mother asked. She noted that her daughter's purse and diary were also missing.

    "I feel destroyed," Joselin added.
    [...]

On Sunday night, investigators searched the family's van and took evidence bags out of their apartment. Crews also looked through dumpsters with trained search dogs.

Police said the family is cooperating. But Jorelys' mother has lost custody of her two younger children, at least temporarily. She was scheduled to appear in family court on Monday.

"We don't think the child's mother had anything to do with her disappearance at this point," Det. Candy Worthy said. "We just think that she was not supervising well enough to keep all of the children safe."

"I am a very good mother," Joselin said Monday. "I'm a very hard-working mother. My kids have everything they need. Everything is in order. They have their room. They have their food. They don't want for anything."

Speaking through a translator on Saturday, the mom told 11Alive News Jorelys was "friendly, sweet, had a lot of friends and everyone just loves her."

Jorelys' father lives in Florida, but he arrived in Canton Saturday to try to help with the search.

I was so hoping that this little girl was just hiding out somewhere, but realized that it was not likely after so many days.

Has it been mentioned whether or not the babysitter was male or female? I know that it is possible a female could have hurt her like that cnut Melissa Huckaby hurt Sandra but I was thinking it possible the baby sitter had something to do with this.

It's possible that the babysitter just wandered off and left her to fend for herself but I always feel it's the person who had the most time to be able to commit a crime. Or someone who knew that she wasn't being watched, someone from the apartment complex.

Police hunt for 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera's killer

CANTON — Local, state and federal authorities continue to hunt for one or more suspects in the death of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, whose body was found in a Dumpster at her Canton apartment complex Monday morning, officials said.

Jorelys’ body, who lived at the River Ridge Apartments off Reinhardt College Parkway, was severely beaten and it appeared she had been sexually assaulted, GBI Director Vernon Keenan said Monday.

GBI Spokesman John Bankhead said investigators continue to follow up with tips.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Monday night and officials are slated to hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to announce the results.

Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said his office, the Canton Police Department, the GBI and FBI have set up a command center at the Cherokee County Administrative Building and “will be working around the clock trying to determine who killed the child.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the command center at (770) 721-7852.

Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation, the employer of Jorelys’ mother, has created a Jorelys Rivera Memorial Fund “to help the family address its needs and cope with this sad even,” said Pilgrim’s Pride spokeswoman Margaret McDonald.

Anyone wishing to donate can contact United Community Bank in Canton at (770) 479-6700.

An award has been set up by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for information leading up to the capture and conviction of the suspect.

Jorelys was last seen around 5 p.m. Friday at the apartment complex playground.

She went to her apartment to get drinks when she disappeared, Canton Police Detective Candy Worthy said.

Local, state and federal law enforcement officials spent the entire weekend searching within a one-mile radius of the apartment complex for Jorelys.

During the search, authorities placed Jorelys’ two younger siblings in the care of Cherokee County Department of Family and Children Services, which Worthy said was a normal protocol.

The siblings remain in the custody of the state, Baker said.

Jorelys’ body was found around lunch time in a Dumpster originally located in the front part of the complex.

Bankhead said investigators previously moved the Dumpster to a vacant field near the complex to give authorities more room to remove the large amount of trash.

Bankhead said the GBI wouldn’t go into details about the condition of the body.

“We are dealing with guilty knowledge,” Bankhead said, noting only law enforcement and the suspect know specific details about the case.

Residents of the apartment complex are puzzled about the murder but spoke positively about Jorelys and her mother.

Nancy Hudgins, a resident of the apartment complex, said officials spent all weekend searching the apartment homes inside River Ridge looking for Jorelys.

She said she had previously seen Jorelys and her mother at the pool and her mother “seemed really nice.”

“The girl would always come to her mother when she called her,” she said. “(She) seemed obedient ... just thought this kind of thing can’t happen here, but I guess it can happen anywhere.”

Ashely Rosalez and her daughter, Shana, live in an apartment complex behind River Ridge and said they often saw Jorelys playing at their playground.

Shana said Jorelys seemed like a normal kid who liked to play.

Seven-year-old Aliah Wilson, who lives with her mother, Stacy Wilson, at River Ridge, said she’s played with Jorelys on the playground there and also said she “liked to play” and smiled and laughed, just like other children.

Pamela Asansa, who moved to the complex a year ago, said she babysits children who were friends with Jorelys and would often bring the children to play with the girl and her siblings at the apartment complex playground.

However, Asansa noted the Rivera children were often unattended.

Asansa added that she went outside to help Friday night and asked Jorelys’ mother if she could be of assistance.

“She didn’t say anything,” Asansa said. “She looked like she was in shock.”

My theory is that the teen aged baby sitter was caught doing something she shouldn't have been doing and this child was going to tell or the teen aged baby sitter lost her shit over a disagreement with the child and then tried to make it look like the motive was sexual assault.

I could be wrong but statistically I doubt it. Whoever did this was not criminally sophisticated, probably doesn't have a violent record and was comfortable enough with the complex to feel the could get a body into the trash unnoticed, so they likely fit right in in that environment.

We will see because if I am right (and the cops know what they are doing and don't fuck it up) it won't take too long for them to be caught.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

I don't know what I think yet. It kinda seems like a spur-of-the-moment kind of murder, but I also heard she often used to go out on her own in the complex so maybe someone had been watching her a while. I only heard that babysitter talk once so far and something about her sounded a little more mature than her years. It'll be interesting to see what comes out in the investigation. I hope they don't mess up.

Preliminary autopsy results suggest Jorelys Rivera was killed within 1.5 hours of her disappearance last Friday.

In a news conference Tuesday morning, GBI Director Vernon Keenan said Monday's autopsy shows Jorelys died of blunt force trauma to her head. She was also stabbed and sexually assaulted.
    [...]

While investigators are still working on the timeline surrounding Jorelys' death, they now believe she was abducted near the playground and taken to a vacant apartment, where she was assaulted and murdered.

Keenan said DNA evidence, including what to appeared to be blood, was collected from the complex and sent to the GBI Crime Lab for testing. Results could be out later

Jorelys' body was found in a dumpster from her apartment complex on Monday afternoon.

While investigators had searched other dumpsters there over the weekend, the contents of the dumpster where her body was found were compacted and could not be searched until the owner of the dumpster moved it to another location. Investigators found Jorelys' body while sifting through the dumpster's contents in an open field off Reinhardt College Parkway.

More than 60 investigators from the Canton Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, GBI and FBI have been working around the clock, going door-to-door, interviewing people and stopping cars at road blocks around the area.

Keenan said several search warrants have been issued and hundreds of interviews have been conducted. A number of people have been interviewed multiple times.

The GBI director said one of the first things they did was interview the registered sex offenders in the area. So far, he said there is no reason to believe any of them was involved in Jorelys' disappearance and death.
    [...]
    http://www.11alive.com/news/article/...-disappearance

The wounds to the girl's body were so severe that Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan refused to describe them beyond that fact that she had blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds.

Keenan described the crime as a "very horrific and brutal murder."
    [...]

"We don't know if the child was targeted or not. We do know from what was determined through the autopsy and other evidence this was a very calculated and planned crime," Keenan said.

Police believe the murderer is still nearby.

"The investigators feel very strongly the killer of the child resides in the apartment complex or has ready access to the apartment complex," said Keenan. "It's very important that persons who live in that apartment complex … If they have any information that could have bearing on this case, to let us know."

Keenan said there are several registered sex offenders who have resided in the River Ridge apartment complex, but they have all been interviewed and "we have no reason to believe at this point that [those] sex offenders are involved."

The scene of the murder may have been an unlocked apartment at the River Ridge apartment complex where Jorelys lived.

Investigators believe Jorelys was abducted near the River Ridge playground, taken to a vacant apartment within the complex, assaulted and murdered, and then tossed in the dumpster.

"We have found evidence in [the vacant apartment] we believe is blood," said Keenan. "We are awaiting results of the investigation. The lab worked all night long."

Preliminary DNA test results are expected to be released today.

Police say Ga. girl's killing 'very calculated"
CANTON, Ga. (AP) - Investigators believe a Georgia girl abducted from a residential playground was taken to a nearby vacant apartment, where she was sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten to death before her body was placed in a trash bin, authorities said Tuesday.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan on Tuesday released autopsy results and new details in the killing of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera of Canton.
    [...]
"This was a very calculated and planned crime," Keenan said. Police did not give a time of death.
Investigators strongly believe the killer either lives in the apartment complex or has regular access to it, Keenan said
    [..]
Keenan said investigators have received numerous tips from the public and said valuable evidence has come from residents at the apartment complex.
Several sex offenders living at the complex have been identified and interviewed, Keenan said. But he added, "We have no reason to believe, at this point, that sex offenders are involved."
About 65 local, state and federal investigators are working on the case and several hundred interviews have been conducted, authorities said.
    [...]
Rodriguez said the girl's mother worked a graveyard shift. Police have since removed two other young children from the Rivera home over "concern about the supervision of Jorelys," said Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department.
Baker said no charges were expected against the mother or the baby sitter.
    [...]
"We're following up on every single tip," Baker said.

CNN confirms arrest made in killing of Canton girl
    , GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
CNN has confirmed that an arrest has been made in the murder of a 7-year-old Canton girl.

Jorelys Rivera disappeared from the River Ridge Apartments in Canton last Friday.

The girl's body was found Monday afternoon in a dumpster 1000 yards from the playground where she was abducted.

GBI director Vernon Keenan said Jorelys was beaten, stabbed and sexually assaulted.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Canton.

Arrest made in Georgia girl's killing
Atlanta (CNN) -- The suspect in the slaying of a 7-year-old Georgia girl worked in the apartment complex where she was killed, investigators said Wednesday.
Authorities arrested Brian Brunn on Wednesday afternoon. He is charged with killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, who went missing from the apartment complex in Canton, Georgia, Friday.
"He was well-known in the apartment complex because he was employed there," said Vernon Keenan, the head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"This investigation will continue on for several months. This is mammoth case. We believe that this horrendous crime was planned and calculated," Keenan told reporters.
    [...]
"We have evidence that the murder occurred in (a) vacant apartment. At some point the child's body was then disposed of in the Dumpster and compacted into trash," Keenan said.
    [...]
Jorelys likely died between an hour and an hour and a half after she disappeared, Keenan said earlier.
He also said that investigators discovered what they believe is blood in a vacant apartment unit.
Relatives of the little girl were devastated by her death.
"My world collapsed," her father, Ricardo Galarza, told CNN affiliate WAPA in Puerto Rico. "I couldn't believe that they robbed her from me."
"They destroyed my soul," her grandmother, Wanda Ivette Rivera, told the same network. "They took a piece of my heart."
Another family member, Miriam Rivera, urged the state of Georgia to "throw the full weight of the law to the person who did this."
    [...]
Canton police, assisted by the FBI and the GBI, expanded the search area Monday and began canvassing for sex offenders living nearby.

Post Ryan Brunn Charged With The Murder Of 7-Year-Old Jorelys Rivera

Canton, GA – Police have arrested 20-year-old Ryan Brunn in connection to the vicious sexual assault and murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera whose body was found discarded in a dumpster. Rivera was last seen alive on Friday playing with other children at the River Ridge apartments. She vanished after telling friends she was going inside to get drinks. After a massive search, her body was found in a dumpster on Monday. Autopsy results showed the girl was killed a short time after she had gone missing and had died from blows to the head and stab wounds. She had also been sexually assaulted before her body was tossed in the dumpster. Brunn is a recently hired*maintenance*worker at the apartment complex, fitting in with the police’s initial theory that the person responsible for the girl’s death*lived in the complex or had access to vacant apartments. “We are confident that Brunn is the killer,” GBI Director Vernon Keenan*said at a*news conference Wednesday afternoon, about an hour after Brunn’s arrest.

Authorities: Man charged with murder in the slaying of north Ga. girl abducted from playground
ANTON, Ga. — A 20-year-old maintenance worker was arrested in the beating death of a 7-year-old north Georgia girl who was abducted and killed at an apartment complex and her body left in a trash bin, authorities said Wednesday.
Ryan Brunn, who lived and worked at the apartment complex, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on a murder warrant, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan.
    [...]
Keenan said Brunn, who has no known criminal record, had keys to both the empty apartment and the trash compactor bin where Rivera’s body was placed.
“We are confident that Brunn is the killer and that is why he is in custody,” Keenan said, declining to detail what evidence investigators have against him.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by The Associated Press, Brunn was arrested on suspicion of murder and making false statements to authorities. The arrest warrant says, “the accused did unlawfully and with malice aforethought cause the death of Jorelys Rivera by hitting her on the head with a blunt object.” No other details are contained in the document, which was filed Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear whether Brunn had an attorney. He was being held at the Cherokee County jail. Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Brunn’s initial appearance in Superior Court was set for Thursday.
    [...]
Keenan said investigators focused on Brunn after receiving information from the public. Brunn had been under police surveillance since Tuesday night. Keenan said the investigation will continue for several months.
“This is a mammoth case,” Keenan told reporters at a news conference in Canton. “We believe that this horrendous crime was planned and calculated, and we’ve recovered a lot of evidence.”
Blue Ridge District Attorney Garry Moss said he had not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.
    [...]
On Wednesday, Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance thanked investigators and volunteers who searched for the slain child. About 65 local, state and federal investigators worked the case and several hundred interviews were conducted, authorities said.
“Our goal was to make an arrest for what has happened to this sweet, innocent little girl,” Lance said

The 20-year-old man arrested today in connection with the killing of a seven-year-old girl lived and worked at the same apartment complex where she disappeared.

Ryan Brunn was a maintenance worker at the complex and tips from the public led investigators to him, investigators said.
    [...]

At the time of her disappearance, the child was being looked after by a teenage babysitter along with her two siblings.

She had left the park to go and collect drinks from home for her friends, and disappeared between the playground and her home at the River Ridge Apartments.

Police had sent several Coca-Cola cans found nearby for forensic testing to see if these are the drinks that the child had gone to collect for her friends.

I'm really trying to find the facts here.

Was mom away or in the house? The articles state different.
Is dad in Florida or Puerto Rico?
The girl's mother was inside while the child played outside, but a teenager was supposed to have been watching Jorelys, Lt. Jeff Hall with the Canton police department said.
I agree with Nell, not unusual to leave your kids in the care of a teenager playing in the playground of the apartment complex even more not unusual if mom was in the house.

And what a piece of shit
Another neighbor confirmed that Brunn assisted in the search, even handing out flyers with the girl's picture.

Lindsey Hale, who lives in the first-floor apartment next door to the Rivera family, said after Jorelys' body was found Monday, she called a tip line twice to tell police about her suspicions about Brunn. She said she also was interviewed by the GBI.

Hale said that in recent weeks, she saw Brunn in his car driving slowly around the playground, looking at children. "I just got creeped out by him," she said.

The family of Jorelys is struggling with news of the arrest and trying to figure out if the suspect ever had approached the 7-year-old girl.
    [...]

Jocelyn Rivera told Channel 2's Ross Cavitt she isn't sure if she'd recognize Brunn and didn't know if her daughter had any interaction with him.

She thanked police for tracking down the suspect.

"I don't want any charges brought against him. What I want is the death penalty. He's an animal and killed my angel," Rivera said.

The family is united in its wish for the death penalty in this case. Jorelys' grandfather told Cavitt he'd prayed for an arrest to ease his pain.

Jorelys' aunt, Zulaika Rivera, said she couldn't fathom what was in the killer's mind because no one in their right mind would do something like this.

She said nobody, especially her young niece, deserved this fate.

Steven Brunn doesn't believe his brother, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn, committed the heinous crime police accuse him of.

"All I know is he ain't did what people say he done did," said Brunn.

Brunn stood in the driveway his mother's Lumpkin County home holding his pit bull dog Wednesday when he spoke with reporter Tony McNary.

"I just don't see my brother committing a crime like this. This is something that a person with a record of that nature would have committed. My brother is not a monster as people making him out to be," Brunn said.
    [...]

"My brother is kind hearted. If he has it he will give it to you. He's never had any kind of violent past or history. He don't even have a record," said Brunn.

CBS Atlanta confirmed it with police, Ryan Brunn does not have criminal history. He lived and worked in maintenance in the same Canton apartment complex where Rivera lived and her body was found.

Brunn said people have used social media to convict his brother before he has his day in court.

"We need to give him a fair chance. He's only human being. I don't know if he did do it or didn't do it, but deep in my heart I'm praying he ain't that dumb enough to do something like that," said Brunn.
